How Does This Fly With Only 1 Wing?

Hey all! I really do appreciate everyone watching, thank you! In today's video we're exploring the physics behind the mono-wing. I started by 3D printing wing sections that was glued in order to complete an entire wing. However, it proved to be too heavy. I made a new wing out of depron foam which worked a lot better. The best way to support the channel is to simply watch my video, thanks guys!

Nice one Simon 😊 So cool to see someone else trying these one winged helicopters! I also based by designs on that original Charybdis design and found the extra stabiliser unnecessary. If the wing has a positive angle of attack, it works just like a flying wing (with no tail). I’ve also found other designs work without the counterweight (again, like a flying wing).

Now let’s try to find a genius who can give basic directional control. Maybe with some gyro magic? Since it’s rotating an upward force might translate into a pitch or yaw if timed properly?
@arturpekosz
@arturpekosz Ай бұрын
I have made monocopters with directional control, using a magnetometer (digital compass sensor). A gyro is usually too slow, since most gyros have a maximum measurable angular velocity of 2000 degrees per second, which translates to only 5.6 rotations per second. So unless your monocopter rotates very slowly a gyro can't keep up.

The weight on the stick isn't to offset the centre of gravity, but to provide pitch stability of the wing. Without getting too deep into the dynamics, the weight on a stick increases the moment of inertia along the wing spar axis which, once spinning, creates a stabilising gyroscopic force that prevents the wing from pitching.
@IsaacKuo
@IsaacKuo Ай бұрын
Yes, and another function is to set the wing's pitch angle (as well as the prop's pitch angle). The weight basically makes the vehicle strongly prefer to align its "plane" perpendicular to the spin axis. At that point, you can set the wing and prop's pitch angle relative to the weight pole.

I'm very surprised at how such a tiny motor could have the power to move such a big wing so fast, that's a lot of torque, considering its length, goes to show how obscenely powerful brushless motors are nowadays lol. Great job.
@malvoliosf
@malvoliosf Ай бұрын
Your English is fine. When the wing is free to move, the center of gravity is going to be directly below the center of lift; that is just physics. If that orientation of the wing is then such that the thrust vector is not pointing straight down, the wing is going to spiral off at random. The problem is, the center of lift tends to be halfway down the length of the wing, while the center of lift is much closer to the motor, so the wing will yaw (or bank, depending on how you look at it) severely, trying to get the COG directly below the COL. I don’t see how to overcome this.
@mandrakejake
@mandrakejake Ай бұрын
His English is better than some of my English friends 😂
@IsaacKuo
@IsaacKuo Ай бұрын
It's really untrue that the wing will spiral off if the thrust vector is not pointed straight down. In fact, it's impossible for the thrust vector to point straight down due to drag. The wing has no propeller to counteract drag, so its thrust vector will always point "backwards" compared to its motion. The propeller is there to prevent drag from slowing down the spin rate, but it's pointed in the opposite direction so this doesn't "straighten" the thrust vector downward. It does the opposite, making the thrust vector even further away from straight down. Nevertheless, monocopters work and the fact that the thrust vector does not point straight down simply is not a problem. Why not? Because the vehicle is spinning. That means that the thrust vector sweeps out a cone, and the overall effect is an average thrust vector that points straight down.
@malvoliosf
@malvoliosf Ай бұрын
@@IsaacKuo "monocopter"? Should be “monopter”, one wing. But drag is resistance to horizontal motion. The monopter is supposed to hover, isn’t it?

The wing piece being heavy is not a setback, it can give momentum and stability like a flywheel, also, the wing is too deep, it needs to be thinner from leading edge to trailing edge, much like a boomerang wing. Also, the centre of wing gravity is where you could place the battery and receiver giving it more stability as the differences in weight distribution can make the wing fluctuate like a guitar string. But given the delicate nature of this project in respect to flight characteristics and technical problems in build quality, I think you did a damn good job to get it flying in the 1st place.
