What's the best liquid to clean RC bearings?

What's this, a video???
A while ago, I posted a video in the RC autopsy series, where I investigated some seized bearings from the Monster Project. In that video I asked if you guys wanted to see a few methods for cleaning them, so here you go.
I was quite surprised by the nitro fuel, but not the WD40. I suppose they both leave an oily lubricant afterwards. This is by no means the best method for cleaning bearings. If you have a better method and/or different cleaning material, please let us know in the comments.

The two things I hear all the time in the high performance finesse baitcaster fishing reel community are zippo lighter fluid and acetone. I have used acetone with some success but I never want to stop learning just in case I'm missing something better.

I hate acetone smell and I got 5kids under 8years old so it was'nt a option to use in the house . I've always used the degreaser in a plastic peanut butter jar that I shake for a couple of minutes ,let them soak in , then shake as I walk near the kitchen sink... rince them using a stainless colander . I preheat the oven at 250 then toss them in for about 15mins or so , that make them dry out verry quickly , I never experienced rust/ corrosion problems . Then I just use a 50/50 mix of automatic transmission fluid/ Wheel bearing grease for outdoor off road , and good old clear Singer oil for Queens shelf and indoor uses .

Basically what I am looking for is the best thing to remove the factory grease from spool bearings to get them down to bare metal so I can lube them with a very light synthetic oil. I'm looking for speed and easy starting first, quiet second, and longevity third. I don't mind changing them out more often in exchange for extra casting distance with light weight lures.

Wd 40 is great for cleaning because it's so thin and by the title of it (water displacement) 40 it will displace any moisture. Drone bearing are tricky because how small and crazy high RPM. I'm debating myself if I should lube my T-motor f40 pro 2 2400kv motors. Excellent video! Thanks

Yeah, WD-40 is good but you just need to re-oil the bearings after cleaning. Glad you liked the video, thanks for watching.

Good test. But I think the common 'blast'n'oil' way would give better results. You open the bearings on both sides, 'blast' them with some motor cleaner or WD40 real close, dry them and then add some ball bearing oil and close them. Don't know if that is the best solution, but I personally haven't seen any better.

Thanks for the helpful video. I've also used WD40 to clean bearings and it worked very well. Do you have a recommendation for a lubricant for bearings after you clean them with WD40? When I did this recently I had used some Tamiya ceramic grease that I happened to have in my tool box. It seems to have worked ok but I don't know if that was a proper lubricant for bearings. Perhaps there are better options than that. Have you used anything different for lubricating your bearings?

You can get oil specific to bearings. Just type into Ebay 'RC Bearing Oil'. Lots to choose from. I personally have never oiled a bearing before, I've just replaced them. But I do have some of this stuff which came with the Yeah Racing Suspension kit for the TT01: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yeah-Racing-High-Speed-Ball-Bearing-Oil-Lube-for-1-10-RC-use-may-suit-Tamiya-/121593634845?hash=item1c4f8ba01d:g:K70AAOSwPcVV0HKH Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

RCProjects Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated. I will get some of that type of oil for the next time I clean out my bearings. I know most people just replace them now as they have become so much cheaper than they were in the old days. I'm a bit of a "tree-hugger" type and hate waste so I want to try to maintain what I already have, where possible. But there are a few bearing in my TT-01 kit that are probably near the end of their useful life that won't be worth cleaning again. Thanks again for your great videos and willingness to exchange ideas and advice with us all. You've got quite a community established here and I think that's a great achievement. Yours is definitely my favourite RC channel on KZfaq.

Try this: First: soak at approx 40 C (no warmer than 48 C), a solution of citric acid (5% by weight) and dish detergent (another 5%) with water (the balance). Soak for 6 to 24 hrs, no less and no longer. Second: rinse then soak in filtered tap water (no warmer than 22 C) for 1-2 hours. Use clean glass or plastic containers. Once out of the rinse, dry immediately and thoroughly. Use compressed air or an air duster if you have it. Lubricate as normal, but don’t use WD-40 at any stage. The citric acid will eat (actually dissolve and convert) the rust without really eating the metal at all (it’s extremely weak), and the dish detergent will both act as a surfactant to help the citric acid get into tiny places and also grab and trap any dirt and oils. Don’t use baking soda or anything, it may have a type of crappy mineral plating effect. Same with hard water. In this application, you don’t need to neutralise this acid, just dilute it. Citric acid you can just use the supermarket one, it’s fine. The iron oxide (rust) will convert to iron citrate which is water soluble. It will just wash away with the detergent.

if you clean your bearings with wd 40 and nitro what you said the bearings are gonna attract dirt and the wd40 actually makes em slower and leads to them breaking because the dw40 turns into glue like oil mas after a few days it just goes bad like that... thing you could ever tell people to do bearings are cleaned like this remove the shieds put them in a empty water bottle without their caps or covers whatever you wanna call em and soak them in citrus orange soap the cheapes natural no chemical or any watter close the bottle and shake the bearings up down but make shure the container is full and they dont hit around just make shure that its a small watter bottle full of orange citrus soap liquid from any local supermarket than after a good shake whipe them off with a paper dowel after that you want to do this correct you wash them off the soap with water yes watter but than right away put them on a paper tower and blow em complete dry with a hair drier than to lube bearings add 2 drops of sawing machine or hair cutter lube or bones bearing speed cream but add only a little like 2 small drops and close the bearing shields or caps give em a little spin and those bearings are gonna last and ride smoof for a ling time bruh this is a really professional tip cheers

WD 40 doesn't lubricate any thing what it says on the tin it does and it doesn't say lubs and WD stands for 'water displasment' so it just drives out water but love you voids btw

New bearings are cheap. By the time they get so dirty that they need to be cleaned, they are likely also worn and should be replaced. All of my engines are high dollar machines and I don't risk them to used bearings being taken out and cleaned.
