A NUMBER WITH 2 DECADES OF MEDIOCRITY
For twenty-one years, the 31 has been a statement number for the RCR fleet. Unlike the iconic number 3 driven by Dale Earnhardt, however, the 31 is known less for its on track performance, and more for its misfortunes on the track as well as its beautiful paint jobs over the years. Let’s take a walk-through time and see the misfortunate legacy engraved into the number 31.

Somehow I forgot Neil Bonnett flipping at Talladega in 1993. So the misery started from the beginning for the 31 team.

I wouldn't count it. All it did was to see if Neil could withstand the rigors of racing again. Ran that race plus the season ender at Atlanta to ensure Dale Sr. won the Cup.

Well, there's no denying that Robby Gordon's 1st Win in the 31 car at New Hampshire is the biggest accomplishment for that car... And Newman would have been the biggest Upset Champion in 2014 if he could've beat Harvick... But now, we'll have to see how things go with RCR now that it's in the era of the 3 and 8....

Mike Skinner was honestly done dirty. He came close the winning several times in 1999, and 2000, but it was the the #3 team that was Childress’s main focus. It was clear the the crew chief was the main factor in Skinners downfall because once Larry McReynolds retires, they took a turn for the worst. They came off 2 seasons where they finished top 12 in points, and then he only scored 1 top ten before he was released. Skinner’s career reminds me a lot of Steve Parks’s Career & both drivers are two of NASCAR’s biggest “What Could’ve Been” drivers

When you said RCR scaled back to a 3 car team in 2010, they already gained a 3rd car in 2005 with Dave Blaney in the #07 car, and the #07 would later be driven by Clint Bowyer, and the #07 would be changed to the #33, and it would be dropped by RCR in 2014 after 2 part time seasons from Austin Dillon.

From the numbers, I'm guessing you're talking about 1998, right? He was outside the top-20, not top-30, and he missed three races due to injury. Morgan Shepherd and Mike Dillon (Austin and Ty's dad) filled in for him. Additionally, competitive depth was much higher in the mid 90's compared to the mid 10's.

@seannolan9857
@seannolan9857 5 жыл бұрын
The #60 was only "cursed" last year. For 20 years, it was the most successful number in the series. On the Cup side, it's been winless since 1950! Actually every number in the 60's has been horrible for decades. The last time any of them won a race was Elmo Langley in the #64 in 1966. The #1 is definitely cursed, though. After Billy Wade won 4 races and finished fourth in points in 1964, nobody has won more than four times, or finished in the top ten in points with that number. The #28 had horrendous misfortune in back-to-back years, but overall it has one of the best records of all numbers.

Jeff Burton was my favorite driver growing up, and Hemric was going to be my favorite driver going forward after following him in the lower series, so I was really excited when I found out that he was moving up to the same car Burton used to drive, even if it was renumbered. But in typical, modern day Nascar style, if you don't set the world on fire right away or bring sponsorship dollars, they won't even let you develop and release you at the drop of a hat. And lo and behold it happened to Hemric. You can't improve if they don't even give you a chance. One season is not enough. Nothing against Tyler Reddick, he's a good guy and a great driver. I just wish they didn't do Hemric dirty like that and gave him more time to develop. I wish Childress reopened the 31 as a third car with Reddick instead and he could've kept them both, but it always comes down to money...

@jonpablo29
@jonpablo29 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, RCR isn't using Dale Sr's number... Dale Sr. was using Richard Childress's number. Richard drove the #3 for his own team that he owned and Dale Sr. drove the #2 for Osterlund Racing. Won his 1st cup driving the #2. Then when Osterlund sold the team to JD Stacy, Dale Sr left the team and went to Bud Moores team where he drove the #15 wrangler car for a couple years. Then when Jr Johnson set it up for Dale Sr to drive for Childress, that's when he climbs into the #3. So, yeah, the #3 was Richard's b4 it was Dale's so it will always be Richard's # to use however he sees fit.

It is a definite possibility that Reddick will make his Cup Debut late in the season, but I think Childress will want to take the opportunity to do another big decision and bring back the #29 for Reddick's Cup Debut...
