Robert Hewitt: My brother-in-law lived above a familywith a teenager. Kid was trying and trying to learn electric guitar but got too frustrated, I guess. He threw a Squire Affinity Stratocaster and a 25 watt Fender amp into the apartment dumpster...and my brother-in-law got them out, cleaned them up and kept them for backup gear! My sister bought me a cheap-ass no name snare drum at a yard sale for $5.00. I turned it into a righteous timbale. You just got to be on the lookout 24/7! LOL. Well, maybe not 24/7...

It's a student snare, so you can imagine that sort of thing gets left behind when someone is no longer taking drum lessons or playing in the school band.

My high school had a few of these, and they usually got left by the wayside for deeper snare drums. Since they weren't well kept, they were always out of tune, and then never touched again

My school definitely isn't a school that has maple snares left behind. We have atleast 7 pearl 13x5 steel snares. I guess it's probably just based on the nearest music shop in the district. The closest store to my district sells the pearl starter kit (bell set, pad, snare, book, and sticks), I'm sure the store in your area and the area of wherever bearded diver found it had a ludwig starter kit. I actually got my starter kit from my sister's ex, who left the snare at his school. I never got a steel snare, planning on taking one before graduation to fulfill the empty hole in my life that is the size of a 13" starter snare...

I know this is an older video but I have been drumming for about 4 years and I remember this video introducing me to you and your channel and I fell in love with that snare. My cousin Josh got me into playing drums since he played when he was my age and we bonded a lot over music, he gave me tips on good gear, technique, etc. Fast forward a bit and Josh starts having heart issues and seizures and he has to live with his mom because he can't live alone in case he has more. He had a couple more but after a while he got better, he started being more healthy in diet, routine, basically started getting his own life back. Fast forward to just a few months ago in late June and when everything seemed better we were told he passed away in his sleep at a friends house from cardiac arrest, his friend said he fell asleep on his couch and he walked by and he was breathing and he walked by again later and he wasn't. Obviously we were all in shock because he was better, and in his mid 30's. We have the funeral and got to say the final goodbye, and not too long after I remember Josh had lived with us before moving into his own apartment and he couldn't take his drums with him, I remembered this because I had borrowed some of his cymbals and I promised him I'd give them back when he wanted them back. So I go up into the attic and find this exact snare. Needed some cleaning but obviously I would've done anything to restore it. Eventually got it finished and loved it ever since. I know this is a long and kind of odd comment on a 4 year old video. But I just needed to say thank you for bringing me back to a better time in my life when I first got started and remembering those fond memories and bonds we created over our passion. Thank you rdavidr, for being there for me without even realizing it. RIP Josh Thiele, the man that introduced me to my life.

Something similar happened to me. Work for a office cleaning service and one of the buildings I was in charge of taken care of wad am old church. They had set aside stuff that was left behind and were planning on tossing. Seen a snare bag, two crash cymbals and cymbal stand in there pile so I asked if I could take them off their hands so they let me have them. Opened the snare bag and inside was a brand new Ludwig Aerolight, best and only bonus I got from the job.

Love the idea of using a q-tip in a drill to clean out lugs. Will use that soon. These snares are the ones that came with Ludwig band student kits in the 2000s. I got one in six grade, recently refurbished it with some bearing edge work and heavier hoops from DFD, now it's my go to for indie rock because it's so much warmer than what you'd expect. Great work as always sir, keep it up!

About 25 years ago I purchased a classic Ludwig Snare made in the 1950's , for $ 20. I got from a young kid who found it in a closet collecting dust. After I disassembled it, and cleaned it, and replaced the heads & snare wires. It looked and sounded so amazing, it instantly became one of the best Drums I have ever played. I found out from a collector in Modern Drummer magazine that this Drum was worth between $300 & $ 500 . I beat that Drum into submission , and traded it in when I upgraded to a better high end Drum kit. I sure wish I could get it back now. 🥁

Hey Dave. I know this doesn't help now but for future reference windex takes off anything ink based without damaging stuff. I also grew up in a shop and have straightened my share of bolts and a length of pipe works for that without marring the threads. You should also check out anti-seize for the threads and the nuts. It's anti corrosive and has a much higher melting point than the white grease you usually use. Love the vids. Keep 'em coming.

What vipersix3 said. Crank that baby down, and also back off that damper and let it ring a little. Of course it's all about personal preference though.

This is nuts, I pulled an old Slingerland snare from the trash at my studio that had exactly the same problems, even down to the bent throw off and bent rim! The only reason I felt confident that I could fix it up was from watching this channel

A good piccolo is hard to beat. I personally play a 1984 Keller shell DW true piccolo. 13”x4”. Cracks like a whip and is so tuneable. Wooden piccs are highly underrated.

Considering that snare was found in the trash, the hoops did not look bad at all, of course, disregarding the slight warp lol! Nice find and pretty cool for someone to send it to you!
