Their cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "America", back in 1972, is what made YES my favorite band FOREVER. They do such incredible covers of popular tunes, but their original music is just so insanely good. " America" is YES at their peak!

I think that the most honest reaction to a first listen of a Prog song from this period is “I have to listen to that again.” I don’t think that Jon Anderson, Peter Gabriel, Robert Fripp, or Keith Emerson care if you don’t love their songs on the first listen. They want you to love their songs on the 200th listen. I think that it may be too early to introduce Rachel to Close To The Edge. Roundabout would be the obvious next choice, IMHO. I just think that Yes lose many potential fans when their introduction is something like Sound Chaser or The Gates of Delirium. Good luck converting Rachel to a Yesfan.

Thanks! Yes, I agree, I don't think you can fully appreciate these songs first time around. And I totally agree about people being put off by certain tracks. Whilst Close To the Edge is one of my favourite tracks it'll be a while before I play it to Rach I think. Need to work up to that. I never know how she is going to react, but I do know she'll be honest about it. (as shown in the Dogs video) :)

The perfection of a Band given by music knowledge by each component in a wonderful way you have to know that the band has been created by Chris Squire (bass) and Jon Anderson on vocals with the adding of Bill Bruford on drums and Tony Kaye on piano. This is the basis to understand the movement of Yes mood.

I always found it interesting while listening to this song, I pictured Bill Bruford just wailing on his kit like a crazed jazz musician. Then when I saw him playing this live on the ABWH video of this song, he was so casual, just bopping away, carefree and comfortable

1971. Fragile is the fourth studio album Yes, released on 26 November by Atlantic Records. It was the band's first album to feature keyboardist Rick Wakeman, who replaced founding member Tony Kaye after the group had finished touring their breakthrough record, The Yes Album. I feel that SIBERIAN KHATRU would be good to try on her.

That word she used "Juxtaposition " I think is exactly what they were trying to achieve with the song. There is the sense of being lost in the city , lost on a wave, lost in their eyes, while dreaming on to the heart of the sunrise, some completely anti-thetical place or state that is calling... I always loved this song, it was considered iconic to aspiring musicians because it was executed with such perfection, those sudden breaks are insanely tight and the way the instruments briefly entangle and disentangle. Its playful and mad really and NOT typical for YES actually. Most other songs feature layered vocal harmonies and dense orchestrations that give a sense of vast size to their sound, rather than jolting the listener from one extreme to another with stark counterpoint and syncopation. ( this track calls to mind Gentle Giant or early King Crimson , both bands were notorious for wild jarring figures that are braided around one another)
@RDMusicExchange
@RDMusicExchange 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I know Yes have more "composed" tunes etc, but I think during this period of Fragile and Close To The Edge, this type of the edited compositions (at least based on what I've read and seen with interviews with the band.) was fairly typical. Cheers
@markjohnson4217
@markjohnson4217 2 жыл бұрын
@@RDMusicExchange That is true,, I guess I was referring to the use of stark, interlocking figures in counterpoint, as opposed to as you said 'edited' arrangements, which simply means many changes and sudden thematic shifts. The best example of counterpoint syncopation would be 'Five per cent For Nothing' also on Fragile. The bass, keyboards and guitar are literally playing rapid single notes BETWEEN one another as triplets in tri-tone intervals, also a one time only experiment for YES but just another morning coffee for Gentle Giant, Lol... Also, a bit surprised Robert Fripp from Crimson did not attempt a lawsuit for that main ascending and descending riff of Heart of the Sunrise, but it may be a coincidence that it is so similar to 21st Century Schizoid Man and Pictures of a City. After Fragile, most subsequent epics like Close to the Edge were orchestral in the fullest sense; authentic theoried classical arrangements rather than simply the fusion'-rock approach of their early albums. If you listen in sequence you might see what I mean.

Yes is so good! I agree that Bill Bruford's drumming is perfect for the band. I've thought for a long time that he must have influenced Stewart Copeland of The Police, since they both seem to me to approach the kit as an entire orchestral percussion section. They both play for the song and focus on accenting and enhancing the composition rather than playing the groove. I love groove, too, don't get me wrong, but there's something exciting about a different aesthetic. Great choice for this reaction. I wonder if Rach would like Roundabout or Owner Of A Lonely Heart more?

As you may know Phil and Bill played together with Brand X. Phil on drums. Bill percussion. Bruford is definitely jazz influenced, but you can hear Collins fusion roots with his drumming on 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway'. Both great drummers (if underrated), but coming from somewhat different directions. Yes was a huge influence on Genesis.

That is precisely what I was going to say. I had the same issue years ago trying to expose my dancer girlfriend to Yes, Crimson, ELP, early Genesis, etc. The songs jumped from bit to bit to bit too much so she was unable to get into any of it. Personally, I love Heart of the Sunrise, but I can absolutely see how this song wouldn't be the best choice as an introduction to Yes for the average person. And while you always see people recommending somebody to listen to the track Close to the Edge, that might be the worst choice of all. I mean, come on, it starts with 3 ➕ minutes of noisy dissonance like nails on a chalkboard fer cryin' out loud!! Maybe try And You And I, or Yours is No Disgrace or I've Seen All Good People or even Jon Anderson's favorite Yes song, Awaken. Roundabout is actually a perfect introduction to their style without the avant garde turns that turns some people off from them. Then again, I could be wrong about the whole thing, who knows. Cheers!

I always though Bill Bruford was a better drummer and showman than Alan White, but Alan White may have been the better musician. White helped in the arrangements of the albums Going For the One which was there at the top of fine art, despite being Rock 'n Roll. I kind of like the Bill Bruford music better, as it's kind of dirtier, like something ordinary people don't experience, but still worthy of fine art.
