"Roundabout" was *such* a huge hit for Yes. Pretty much everyone at the label and their management knew it was going to be a great song for them, so much so that Atlantic Records in the U.S. didn't even ask for help or permission before created a single-length version for radio play. But Yes themselves at least knew it was a good live song and opened with it on the Fragile tour, and then moved it to the closing position on the Close to the Edge tour. It stayed in the set -- usually as the closer or in the encore -- for most of their history going forward. "Played to death" is the term often used to describe it by long-time fans. 😉

Hey guys! Back to YES!! Can never go wrong with live versions of Roundabout. I've seen this song in concert over 200 times. It never gets old. This line up is considered by most to be the classic line up of YES. They were so good together. I miss Chris SO much! Probably playing his Rick in heaven right now. Thanks for the great reaction and may YES go on FOREVER!!!😎

It was around 70, and I had just learned to drive, and was driving out in the country beyond Charlotte, when on the radio came this new and exciting sound. I almost flatulated in my dungarees, I was so abrupted by the halting vocals, the treble bass, and creative drum licks. I went on to memorize everything they did for the next several years. Jon's song, "Boundaries" is timely, and he has a new one that is even more timely, even pointed.

I always find it such a pity that the live recordings of this tour are "very poor" in terms of camera work as well as picture and sound quality. Nonetheless, it's nice that you checked out the original. There are also some versions circulating on the internet in which someone has added the recording from the Yessongs album to the video. It's also live, but it always seems strange when the music doesn't really go with the pictures.

You should listen to the studio version first... Just saw an interview with Steve Howe talking about roundabout.. he thought it was amazing that only had to do was strum an acoustic guitar while bruford, squier and wakeman provided the punch. The studio version the whole first part of the song is done with an acoustic guitar .. howe said he was very proud of the fragile album because they had decided to get the music tight as a drum and with Eddie offord producing, the mix became impeccable. You can't go wrong with anything off of 1973 yessongs though .. this was yes at the height of their powers. back then live they played with such aggression and energy .. all the individual solos on the album are amazing . . Then with songs like yours is no disgrace Steve Howe and Chris squire go completely off the hook. Over the years as they matured the sound got cleaner and the songs got slower.. but in 73 I don't think there was any other band that could do what they were doing live

One of the members of Yes, looking back at their "starving artist" period, commented about how being unable to afford enough groceries had made them all look rail thin, but, years later, after experiencing world-wide success and some nice income, they had plumped up to the degree that "it now looks as if Chris Squire had eaten everybody else in the band". I don't want to pick on Chris Squire. I'm an equal opportunity snarker. A better version of the Roundabout lyrics uses the chorus "in and around Greg Lake, mountains come out of the sky and they stand there".

The studio version is much prettier. Chaotic? Not really, but, then again, progressive rock is certainly more complex that the typicial 2 or 3 minute pop radio single. Having been in college when the triple live album "Yessongs" was released, I will report from personal knowledge that the musical genre dubbed "progressive rock" was huge back then. Yes had a DJ advocate in Philadelphia, and when Yes toured, they sold out the city's football stadium, maybe 60,000 in attendance, and in other cities like Detroit, they booked Cobo Arena for mulitple nights and sold all seats almost immediately. Yessongs is an amazing work of musical art. Before its release, many music critics, and a lot of the fans, were unwilling to believe that the long and complex studio cuts could be faithfully reproduced by the band in a live performance. Boy, were those people proven about as wrong as wrong can be. In some instances, the songs were even speeded up a bit when done live. Perhaps those of us who have enjoyed the long song form, with its changes in tempos and dynamics, and oftentimes almost opaque lyrics, sung by a castrati, have become comfortable with what others perceive as sonic chaos. This was about as melodic as Yes ever got. Compare "Roundabout" to "Sound Chaser".

To be fair, there is a lot going on (as with most Yes tracks), and at the first time of listening, I can see why it might get that reaction. You'll always get an honest reaction from Rach - she didn't enjoy HOTS, but did really like Awaken. The production is much better on the studio version, I agree. Thanks for watching!

I much prefer the studio version. It has a much deeper groove. This ‘72 live version sounds rushed and it sounds like they were all trying to outplay each other. The result is, it sounds chaotic, to me. With the studio version, all the pieces fit and it doesn’t sound like a competition. And- Bill Bruford, what can I say?
