In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of Megadeth based on the many requests for music from Rust in Peace after last week's Metallica video. This is my fourth time reviewing music from Megadeth, and although I'm still not a big fan of Dave's vocals, their music is growing on me. I especially loved the chromatic motion in the bass line and the chromatic third modulation in the final section of the song. I hope you enjoy!

You're right that it's two different guitarists. The 11 solos are played by: Verse 1 1. Marty 2. Marty Verse 2 3. Marty 4. Marty Here's the tempo change 5. Marty 6. Marty 7. Dave 8. Marty 9. Dave 10. Marty 11. Dave

Little bit of trivia for you here doug: the main chromatic chord progression in the very beginning in D is the exact same chord progression in one section of Call of Cthulhu, and Dave Mustaine actually did get songwriting credit for that. In case someone else has not posted it, many of Megadeth's "official" videos are actually edited for time, shorting the songs. For example, the 'Hangar 18' official video has several solos edited out. 'In My Darkest Hour', which you have already watched, is also edited. And, 'Sweating Bullets' is edited losing around 50 seconds. I don't know why they did it, other than maybe to fit within Mtv's time parameters?

My father was building supervisor for Buildings 18E and 18F at Wright Patterson AFB for about 10 years in the 80's and 90's. They are very interesting buildings, one of them (can't remember if it was E or F) was basically a giant freezer, which they used to test starting jet engines in sub-zero temperatures in the 1950's. I've been in both buildings and the only alien I ever saw was the Star Wars 'Hammerhead' action figure in a liquid filled jar on a work desk, with the label 'Specimen 052577' if I remember correctly.

Awesome to see you cover MEGEDETH again Doug! Daves voice changes somewhat over the albums but still has his classic snarl and will take some getting used to. The end sections of Hangar 18 are in two parts, E minor , but then switches to a chromatic riff thats "E,F,F# F# an octave higher" like a metal/blues scale . Would recommend listening to "a tout le monde" where Daves vocals are arguably better. Would love to see your take on some of Marty's solo work "undertow" or anything from his albums, maybe even his newest release would be of interest as its better produced and has some amazing piano work.

Still far better an album than Risk or Supercollider, both of which are terrible. But at least Supercollider seemed like Dave wrote it because he wanted to, rather than Risk which was written to become a radio hit. Risk is garbage because it was forced, Supercollider seems less so and at least genuine, but still completely boring.

Hi Doug! Loved your reaction to this particular song, pretty much mine when I've heard it back in 94. Completely mindblown by the solos, and rythmic changes. The solo duel towards the end of the song, are indeed shared by Marty and Dave, and you can clearly listen who did what solo. Marty's are articulated, and have a much cleaner sound, while Dave's sound a bit more chaotic and less defined. If memory serves me well, 8 remember reading and interview with Ellefson (bass player) where he said that this was the first song where he used a 5 string bass, because e felt the need to use the extra D String. As for the your opinion about the voice, don't worry you are not the only one who doesn't appreciate it. Dave has a particular style, not versatile, but it plays a big part in making Megadeth being what they are. I guess there's no in between on this matter.. I love the band!

The thing about Dave's voice is that it's a character voice, not meant to be technical singing with huge range and clarity and power like a Halford. Dave's singing style is more punk-influenced, meant to convey the anger and emotion of his lyrics; sort of a snarl if you will. More about attitude. Personally I love his vocals as they perfectly suit the music he writes. He also throws in a lot of clever inflections, for instance in Tornado Of Souls when he says "Hanging up I wanted to cry", he sings it with a mock-crying expression.

I remember the bad review of Holy Wars. It was when Doug was reducing every single review to what he knew before: just chord progressions, nothing else. He had no appreciation for a song in E (big 'no'), the changes in tempo, the excellent riffing, the variety of the song, the tempo changes, the arrangement - didn't want to appreciate any of it. But smart man he is, he grew to appreciate the energy, complexity, rhythms and variety of metal. I followed that development over time from an outside view with him ultimately turning into an air drummer and destroying his hair style :-) I really like this development. Reminds me of countless people I know (including my own son) who got sucked into the great musicianship and details that can be discovered listening to good metal bands, not to speak of the groove of music played in a precise and natural way .Keep it up, Doug!

Megadeth was the first metal cassette tape , it was Countdown to Extinction. My mom bought it for me a few months after it came out for my birthday. That started my journey into metal. I still have that tape.

Yes and no. Dave likely wrote music around his vocals and so his vocal approach is the best for this particular music. But -- and I'm sure I'm in a huge minority here -- with the exception of a handful of songs I can't stand Mustaine's voice. Songs like Symphomy of Destruction, À tout le monde and a few others make good use of his vocals, but otherwise his songs sound to me like a guy who was going to make darned sure he has complete control of his band this time, and that meant him handling vocals whether he could actually sing or not. Just my opinion.

The original version of MD45 had Lee Ving from Fear singing. it was definitely different. I really liked it, but it didn't do that well. Dave re-recorded the vocals when he did all the remixes like 10-12 years ago.

Thanks for doing more Megadeth. You really should broaden up even more and try early Mercyful Fate, though. I think that will be interesting for you. They were pioneering their very ovn style back in then early 80’s. I would recommend something from the album Melissa, like the opening song «Evil», but others here might have better tailored suggestions. Would be cool if you did one og their songs.

When you listed off the songs you'd heard by Megadeth, I was surprised that you didn't say "Symphony of Destruction." That song isn't as thrashy as a lot of their earlier works, but it gave them a major listening audience because it was a bit more marketable. Despite it not being as heavy, its one of my all time favorite songs. Check it out!

This Thrash album is considered the Gold Standard in thrash and many including myself classify this entire album as a Metal Masterpiece....It was a perfect album at the time and the guitar work is {chefs kiss}. One of my top 5 albums of all time in the Metal Catagory....its a tie for 1 and 2 beween Master of Puppets and this album Rust in Peace. The guitar work is a master class in thrash metal that was and still is hard to beat.

Hey Doug. Glad you checked out this Megadeth song because I think it's really good. Maybe you'll also "A Tout Le Monde" which is more ballad. Could you please react to the band Death? Either the song "Pull the Plug" or "Left to Die". Death is a band that helped birth and shape a new metal genre (death metal) after thrash metal (Metallica, Megadeth). The band leader was a great musician and composer, I think you might find them interesting.

I only got into Megadeth back in 2019. Spot on that it takes time to acclimatize your ears and brain to listening to such heavy music. Not a huge fan of Dave's voice as well, but since I learned a bunch of their songs for guitar by ear, the rhythm sections, I can tell you Dave is a genius song writer for electric guitar. Even songs like Devil's Island from way back in 1986 are essentially Etudes for thrash metal. Lots of bad tabs and transcriptions out there, but when you figure out the way Dave wrote the parts they all have his economy of motion baked into them. There's a logic to every riff. Memorable, fun to play, instructive.

The vocals are the big thing for everyone at first it seems, sure was for me back in the day : - ) but this is a very rewarding band with tons of amazing albums and over time grew to be one of my all time favorites.
