In this #metalmonday edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of Megadeth for the first time in over a year. Last time, with Holy Wars, I was left wanting a bit more...but this time, I was quite enthralled by this song's sound, performance, and construction. I can guarantee that it won't be more than a year before I listen to Megadeth again! I hope you enjoy!

As an old timer Megadeth fan I applaud you finding all the gems in their music we have over the years. Technically speaking Ive always felt they were a step above their contemporaries in songwriting and abilities. Years ago I was a musician in Seattle (yes during "those" days) and I had the opportunity to go backstage to a Megadeth concert. All my friends said, "you might meet Mustaine, and he's an asshole (knowing my low tolerance for assholes)". Well I did meet him, and he was the furthest thing form that. We sat for about 10 minutes alone eating pizza and drinking a beer, talking about Phoenix and the desert, and he was very genuine and gracious with his time.

After about 20 years of listening to Megadeth I'd certainly put it in my top three along with Peace Sells and Rust in Peace. It's been considered one of their weaker earlier albums by many people but I think that's just because it's sandwiched in-between two trash metal masterpieces. SFSGSW has an atmosphere that is entirely unique in the genre.

@@paulobernardino3785 Bro, I agree. It’s not the same thing. Only use the remaster for a party with loud music. The remaster adapts better to modern speakers. For personal listening the original is best. Loud music can work on the originals also. But, you need a retro sound system. It’s more about the compatibility with the technology. Those CDs weren’t meant to be listened to on the new equipment.

@@roldanrosario8292 1 - are you implying that albums produced in the 80s (or any classics from the 70s and 60s for that matter) dont sound good on modern sound systems and therefore they should all be remasterd? 2 - this is thrash metal we are talking about. just do a little adjustment to the highs, middles and lows and youre good to go. 3 - the megadeth remasters sound like shit wherever you play them. they are a disgrace.

This one is personal to me, and it's the divergent point, when I first heard it back over thirty years ago, between Metallica and Megadeth. Next ones: "PEACE SELLS" from their 1986 album "Peace sells... but who's buying", a complete masterpiece, both musically that lyrically...and/or: "LAST RITES: LOVED TO DETH" from their very 1st album, with that piano introduction!! Give it a shot Mr. Doug 👍🤟🤟

I was just listening through a few songs trying to think about what might be interesting to you. The first thing I thought of was Dread and a Fugitive Mind. I recently learned to play it on guitar. It got a bittersweet vibe and makes heavy use of the contrast between loud and quiet. I might be biased but I like those slightly usual arpeggios and how they change rhythm. I like their song Lucretia. It is also on the bittersweet side of things and how the intro resolves is just orgasmic. Tornado of Souls is a great song, but if you weren't feeling Holy Wars I don't see why you would dig that one. I can also play a bit of The Poison was the Cure and Polaris. The former is just stupid fast and fun to play, while the latter has a cool triplet thing going on, but they wouldn't make for the best suggestions for the next metal Monday.

Doug gets it. It's never been about how good Dave can sing, it's always been about the emotion and the attitude that he conveys and how will it fits with the amazing Megadeth sound.

Possibly one of the BEST songs he has ever written. It is truly honest. The music comp is discussion worthy. The lyrical content is also very discussion worthy. It sinks, builds, then sinks and builds again. It's so very human. Funny thing is, when this came out I was 13 and the time period was rife with "metal scare" among parent groups. I can remember my parents confiscating the cassette and not being aloud to have access to material of this nature. Too bad they didn't really take the time to figure out what is was all about.....but that is another discussion for another time. Here I am, about to turn 48, and it is still relevant and artful. Thanks Mr. Mustane.

I'm getting back into playing guitar (as a fun hobby) after years of not even owning a guitar let alone playing. Recently I've been playing this song a bit as it's one of the ones that I've remembered relatively quickly how to play a lot of for some reason. Anyway, in the last few days I've been wondering "how would the daily Doug react to this?" and here is my answer. Thank you for choosing this one. Diane is truly Dave's muse as she has inspired a few of his songs.

"I walk, I walk alone, To the promised land, There's a better place for me But it's far, far away, Everlasting life for me, In a perfect world But I got to die first, Please, God, send me on my way..." I think those lyrics were inspired by something Cliff Burton used to say about dying and the afterlife... Metallica used a poem that Cliff wrote for the track 'To live is to die" similar to this ...I watched a documentary about Cliff Burton, and his sister Connie talked about her brother. They used to live w/ their parents when Cliff was in Metallica, and Connie said he would turn on Bill Graham Ministries on TV and watch in the mornings... And even though he wasn't religious, it was very odd that Cliff would quote Bill Graham Ministries about 'the Kingdom of salvation' and 'the promised land'... Even Metallica would hear Cliff talking about the afterlife from what he heard on TV; Cliff Burton died at age 24... maybe he unconsciously had a premonition that he was not going to live a long life. His death affected everyone, including Connie, who got into heavy drug abuse afterwards. When u listen to the Metallica instrumental 'Orion' that Burton had helped compose, there is a slow, sad section on the track w/ his bass... it sounded almost like he was saying goodbye to anyone listening... Even the beginning of the track sounded like a huge vehicle approaching from a distance until the drums kick in and then James' guitar starts ripping (Cliff was killed in a bus accident on tour).

Next time you're up for gauging Megadeth, may I suggest you give an ear to, "Countdown to Extinction", on the album of the same name. Arguably their finest work, Marty Friedman's guitar virtuosity will melt your brain.

Hey Sir, One of my alltime favorite Megadeth compositions is the Lucretia Solo. Please listen to that magnicifent piece of music. The song is on Rust in Peace album and the solo is done by Mary Friedman - one of my alltime favorite musicians. He used to play in a band together with Jason Becker before Megadeth. Marty has his own style of playing. I really love his nuances where for example he will start on a wrong note and then bend it into a right one and just crazy little things like that. I think he also does these things where his solos are not necessarily in the key where the rhythim guitar is playing a riff and instead he will be changing keys of his solo to allight with just the part where the riff is currently moving.

As a 16-year-old with a relatively new driver's license, I was blasting this song in my dad's car while scattering away from a busted high school party. The song sped up and so did I, that's when the tree jumped out in front of my car officer. Good or bad that memory is always associated with this song. 🤘🤘🤘
