What a great topic to talk about. First and foremost, I hope that anyone who has been close to a narcissist or experienced abuse can discuss their experiences and find coping strategies with a trained mental health professional. A lot of people may think they are fine, but these kinds of experiences can also affect us subconsciously without us realizing. I think another thing to keep in mind is that often narcissists or emotional abuse isn't always as obvious as the examples in the article. A lot of the time what they say is more subdued/implied (especially at the beginning of the relationship), and progressively get worse over time (e.g. the famous metaphor of a frog in boiling water). Many people stay in these friendships or relationships because "it doesn't seem bad enough to leave" or because the abuser has caused the person to feel like it's their fault and they have to make up for it. Sometimes it is also hard to differentiate between normal relationship conflict since every friendship/relationship has fights at some point. Toxicity isn't a clear black and white sign, plus we often make excuses for people we care about. "Maybe they're just having a bad day/month/year", "maybe if I show them enough love, they'll love me back", "maybe this is just due to misunderstandings" etc. I appreciate that Jae said we should all take time to scrutinize our relationships, and also that we should try not to become like this unknowingly. I'm also glad Alexa pointed out that saying no is okay and doesn't make you a bad person. I think another thing to realize is you don't need a "good enough reason" to stop being associated with someone who makes you feel bad about yourself. If they are not improving your life, if they make your life harder, if they are not giving you happiness, and if they hurt you, you are allowed to leave. You shouldn't feel that you need a "proper or justified" reason to distant yourself from someone. If they don't add joy to your life, that is a proper reason.

It took so long for me to realize my ex was manipulative and verbally abusive. The relationship grew to be very toxic and I'm just so glad I left that situation. Thank you for talking about these things. It is hard when you're in that type of situation to see it for what it really is.

My sister's ex-fiance was extremely toxic. When she said she wasn't sure if they should get married, he told her that she should be grateful he's with her because he could do better and he's settling for her. I'm not even paraphrasing that. He actually used those words. It took her 3 months to finally break it off because she was scared he would try to hurt her. If you have a bad gut-feeling about someone, your gut is probably right and you do what you need to do in order to get away safely.

When I said no to him, that's when I realized what kind of person he was. We broke up coz I can't give him what he wanted.

unfortunately this is the definition of my dad, sometimes he does it subtly and sometimes he doesn't even hide it. I don't know why no one notices in my family. He is very manipulative, always needs to be the one who knows everything and has to be the center of attention. This made him have a naturally very loud voice, and interrupts anybody mid conversation (whether its an older person or younger) if he has to. Doesn't understand the concept of being considerate , and NEVER can he admit he is wrong. I am actually fed up of him, he pisses me off so much and like i'm the only one who sees this!! my family are in that state where they see him as an idol and can not be wronged and keep feeding his ego.
