Two years ago I upgraded to 4.88 Nitro gears with my Toyota Tacoma. They were not installed in a reputable shop nor under warrantied work. Right away, I noticed a soft "murring" noise when in four wheel drive, but only when coasting or decelerating. When I asked about it I was told, "The gears just need to broken in."
Over the next year, that "murr" noise continued to grow louder and more apparent. To the point that I did not dare drive in four wheel drive. That's when I had Geoffrey Beers - The Yota Guy - take a look. He immediately discovered a very loose pinion flange with tons of free-play. A rebuild was definitely mandatory. In this video we discover the extent of the damage from improper installation.

dare we ask who did the original install of those new gears? Would help some of us avoid a similar issue. At least tell us what state the original work was done in

And this is often why I hate leaving it to the professionals... because when it goes wrong, you have no idea what they did or did not do... When you F' it up yourself, you normally know where you F'd it up!

You can see why this install failed at 7:32. The pinion seal must be driven back well past flush with the end of the housing as it was done here. The pinion gear was drifting forward and back and that's the reason the carrier was all chewed up.

Haha I was watching him point at the ring gear waiting for him to point to the chew marks on the carrier.

I work for toyota for over 30 years ine thing a lot of tech don't do is to check preload on input shaft after assembly by using a brass punch and tapping in both side of the shaft and them measure preload I have never have a failure using this method

Inexcusable! I've been in the auto repair industry for a few decades now. This was laziness, negligence, flat out "zero F's given" (or some combination of all three). I'm sorry this happened to you. People like this are what gives my industry a bad name. Hopefully karma catches up with them. Bud glad to see you're back on the road, and better off that before. I can only imagine how much quieter and smoother it runs.

Toyota front clamshell differential is harder to setup and very different front the rear, I believe few technicians know how to setup it properly, that's why you see so many has problem switch gears in the front because they were setup incorrectly! And the technican will blame it on Nitro gears instead of their incapability
