Sounds like with me living in the mountains of West Virginia 5.29's are what's gonna be best for my 2021 Taco. I noticed how he spoke of that extra overdrive too. I could tell that 6th gear was just too much so I started running mine in S-mode and only going to 5th gear. Plus I noticed it helped a lot with the gear hunting as well. After this video I'm definitely going to see about getting mine regeared ASAP. Thanks for the video guys!

I have a 2014 FJ Cruiser and I’ve always thought the gearing is off especially when I rig it up for a trip + passengers. On top of that it’s struggling depending on wind conditions in complete stock setting. I’ve driven and F-150 on the highway with no dramas and wonder why doesn’t my FJ feel like that. Re-gearing my FJ might be the solution to a lot of my problems. This guy really sounds like he knows his stuff basing it on his experience.

Had a 93 t100 4wd for a while. Damn thing had 4.70 ratio stock rear end. Couldn’t drive it on the interstate hardly running 29 inch tires. Even that low of a ratio that truck was gutless. You are right about power and rpm being different. The 3.0 had no power; 4.70s just give a better crawl ratio.

I have a manual 2017 TRD sport manual. Manual is geared about right, i just wish the 6th was geared a little taller. There is a 1-2 MPG difference between 70 MPH and 80 MPH on the highway. 80 in 6th is about 2800 rpm, and MPG takes a bit hit.

Son has an 06 tacoma 4x4 4.0 with a six inch lift with 35" tires (came that way). Pretty sure the gears are factory which I would have to check. Anyway we do want to get it re-geared, doesn't pull anything right now, however we are looking at getting as much out of this truck as possible. Not pulling anything at this time. Just want to get this Tacoma to do what it should be doing. Would re-gearing produce better power and mileage or one over the other. Thanks. Great video! Cheers

Interesting to watch this video. My 2016 Tacoma 4dr V6 4x2 has stock everything. I added only a pipe rack, tonneau cover, and running boards. I would like better performance driving uphills. Currently driving at 60-65 mph my engine is reading 4200-4300 rpm. What would be the best new gear size to improve the perfordmance. I recently rode a 2017 Tacoma (same everything as my tacoma) except it was a 4x2 Sport. Traveling at 60-65 mph, it's rpm was approximately 3000 rpm +/-.

If you have a 3rd gen Tacoma 5.29s are the only way to go! I’m running 285/70R17 BFG KM3 tires. No more driving around in 4th gear, no more hunting for gears, it’s a totally different truck. I highly recommend 5.29s. $1000 for labor and around $1260 for the gears. I went ahead and had a ARB front locker installed for no additional labor cost but I had the arb air compressor already installed. Just had to pay for the front locker.

Just had 5.29 Nitro Gears installed on my 2019 Tundra. It has a 2.5” lift and running 35” tires. Was very tired of feeling like I was constantly hauling around a trailer because of the weight & size of the tires. I almost went back to stock size but ended up having the gears installed and so glad I did. Now it feels like it did the day I bought. Holds 6th gear like it never did before. I can tell by the exhaust note that the engine isn’t struggling like it did before and always changing gears. If you plan on keeping your tundra and you’re running larger tires, do yourself a favor and go for it. Almost like getting a new truck all over again, way more fun to drive.

From what I am hearing here, and the other videos is that it's 5.29's all the way. Regardless of tire size or weight. The tech has made a point of metioning the new trucks ( 2016+) love the higher revs and you might as well go with the 5.29s. I have a 2020, with no real intention on going real heavy in mods, just a cap and potentialy a rooftop tent. No one has definitively said this so it would be great if someone just said straight up. All he is saying is regearing is needed from stock.

OK that's great and all for you guys with 35" tires and what about us that are closer to stock? I have a 2005 SR5 access cab.... And unfortunately bone stock it feels like it needs to be regeared..... I actually have slightly larger tires on it 265/70 17...... Yes my gas mileage is absolutely terrible. I mean I get 15 in town the minute I hit the freeway I dropped down as low as 11 mpg if I'm doing the 80 mph speed limit...

TO PUT IT SIMPLE: the regearing actually makes use of the 6 speed transmission. 6th gear is useless without a regear. The engine can handle it no problem. It's the transmission and differential that can't handle the engine efficiently

Dang that is not much for MPGs out of that white Taco, I get 21 in my bone stock Tacoma at the pump driving around town. I got 25 in the hills off-roading slowly on misc dirt roads. I do have a manual transmission though, so 4.30s in the rear. Again, all of that is measured at the pump when I fill up.

Running 37's on a 2nd gen. auto, was looking at 4.88, think I'll go with 5.29's as I was asking with Nitro reps.

Great video. Is the 2020 Tacoma still in need of regearing right off the lot?

@Seags 98 - I appreciate the response. I've actually shifted to a new market now. I've decided to make a bigger investment, and avoid the work a Tacoma (or even a 4Runner) entails. I'm looking for a used, low mileage Lexus GX 460.

I have an 18 6m/t. I think my future, if i keep this truck, is a 3.73 or lower and the 2Lo mod

Why would you go from 4.30 to 3.73 ? The stock 4.30 is much better than 3.73. 2Lo is a great modification and it helps when backing up on incline with a trailer 👍. I did this to my truck and it works great.

@tacomabeast what would be best gearing for my 2012 Toyota Tacoma 2.7l on 35’s? I’m still wanting to be able to drive freeway speeds as well. Thanks in advance!!

Kinda late to the party, but any suggestions for performance (4.88 vs 5.29). Best for maintaining power in the dunes vs trails/crawling? 2019 DCLB Taco w/35’s.

Love the content. I live in Austin Texas, wish I could drive to you for regearing. Where can I locally get an equally expert vendor to regear my 2022 Tacoma TRD Off-Road? Regearing is serious business; I want experts doing the work vs. a company that installs leveling kits & bigger wheels and tires contracting such services. Does that make sense?

I bought a 2016 tacoma in late 2015 and a cousin of mine who is a mechanic said i should of waited till the 18 and 19 models come out reason being is so toyota can work out the bugs he said everytime a new model comes out the first year is always the worst i should of listened my biggest problem with my 16 manual tacoma 4x4 was a clutch issue everytime i took it off road i noticed clutch slippage other people with the same model said the exact same thing. I was ready to upgrade the clutch but had an cash offer for my truck so i sold it big mistake i should of kept that dam truck.
