Let's Get After It - Season 1 Ep 10
#howtoregearjeepwrangler #jeepregear #whatgearsarebestforwrangler #jeepregear
One of the most common questions we get are:
1: Do I need to re-gear for "xx" size tires?
2: What gear ratio do I need for my Jeep? (4.10s? 4.56s? 4.88s? 5.13s? 5.38s?)
On this Episode of Lets Get After it we go over we go over one of the most important upgrades you can do to your Jeep to keep the drivability with larger tires; Re-Gearing!
Why is regearing so important?
Jeep keeps downshifting?
What is the best gear ratio for jk jl jt tj?
We answer all of those today!

Have really enjoyed this series. You guys tossed in some 5.13s and an ARB for me last week and what a great experience! As a person that has done everything myself on my rig, so key to have such a great shop to trust for those instances when things are outside of my comfort level.

I always tell people, you don’t NEED to regear, but you absolutely should!! Gears are that upgrade that people don’t want to do because it’s no aesthetic. You don’t visually see anything new and cool. But once you do finally regear you’ll wonder why you never did it earlier.
@TheOutlawOffroad

We always recommend a re-gear. JL's are a little different as they "can" get away with a bigger tire, but keeping 8th gear as the factory intended is much needed. JK's and older is definitely a must!

Great video. Love the series. I am resurrecting an 89 YJ with 4.2l and 5spd manual and just put 33x12.5 tires on it. Have Dana35/30 with factory 3.07 gears. I’ve done the formula (33 x 3.07/28) to figure what I should have and it works out to be 3.73 (rounded up). But when pursuing different forums I see folks saying 4.55 or even 4.88 on 33s! I will mostly be driving around town but would like to off road a bit. Should I be going that high of a ratio and/or would 4.11 be a good compromise?

If you see a lot of highway driving, 4.10s would be an excellent compromise. If you want more low end torque or a bigger tire in the future, a 4.56 would be perfect!

Front and rear gears will always be the same. For that setup we would suggest a 5.13. For that tire size its a little over-geared, however it will help bring some power back when the camper is behind it, but also set you up for success when you go to a larger tire size!

@TheOutlawOffroad
@TheOutlawOffroad Жыл бұрын
The biggest difference is where you're RPM's will be on the highway at that point. 5.13's will be slightly higher. If you are pulling a trailer, or loading down the rig with overlanding gear, 5.13's may be best. When in doubt, always go the next ratio up. We've never heard someone complain about being slightly overgeared, but we have had customers say "man i wish i geared up a little more because i decided to go to a bigger tire, haul more gear, want more torque down low" etc

the easiest way to tell is to jack the rear axle up, mark the drive shaft with chalk or a paint pen and count how many times the driveshaft spins compared to one rotation of the tire. For example, if the tire makes one rotation but your driveshaft spins a hair over 4 times, you have 4.10s. 4.5x and you probably have 4.56, close to 5x but not quite, 4.88 etc

My 1999 XJ 4.0L has 32s and I'm going up to 4.88s this year. My jeep is not my daily so I can take it this deep for towing and carrying weight occasionally. At this point I will have very poor fuel economy. For you if you want better fuel economy, stay 3.55 gears at 30s. But you will notice less power. I did 30s for 3 years and it honestly maybe added 1-2mpg highway, but the biggest savings was larger tires and not spending money on a gear swap. So ideally it depends on what you use your jeep for. But I'll say 3.55 gears on 32s is death, here in Wyoming my jeep cries everytime I ask it to climb a hill at any speed

.006-.010 Per Yukon's instructions. However backlash is only part of the equation for a good wear pattern. Shims and preload come into play as well as the correct break in procedures

I recently had a 2.5 inch lift and 35's (actual measured 33.75 with weight on) installed on 2015 4-door Rubicon Hard Rock with 4.10 gears. I am on the fence between re-gearing to 4.56 or 4.88. Living in Colorado, does that affect what gears I should install?

@TheOutlawOffroad
@TheOutlawOffroad 3 ай бұрын
The locker will be dependent on the gear ratio. Regardless of brand, Usually the break over is 4.56, so be on the lookout for a locker that says 4.56 and above or similar.

Sometimes all the comments get hard to keep up with! TJ/LJ and the 4.0 probably deserve a video on their own. With the auto, you need as much help as you can get. For 33's we have found that 4.56 is a sweet spot. If you plan on going with a 35 in the future go ahead and do 4.88s

If you have it in your budget to regear AND do 37s that Mojave will be an awesome vehicle. If you cant do both at the same time, 37s can go first and gears later, but you will probably notice that you want new gears sooner than later if going this route.

higher rpm on the highway is the trade off for a deeper gear ratio. You get more torque on the low end to push those 37s but it takes some of that power out of the top end

If someone wanted to run 40" tall tires would 4.90 gears be okay? Ouverson offers 4.90 gears for the Rockwell 2.5 ton axles. (I do not know if anyone else offers other gear ratios for Rockwell axles). While 4.90 gears might still not be enough for 40's but it is still much better than the factory 6.72 gears. Especially if the vehicle is going to see very much highway or daily driving use. Thanks in advance for any and all advice, opinions, or answers. Regards

Maybe you can help me, Im finding alot of misinformation on the interwebs. I recently got a sweet deal on a 2012 Jk sahara with a 3.6 , 6 speed manual on 35s. I believe it has 3.73s in it but not positive. It never sees 6th gear. The guy I got it from threw in a set of Yukon 5.13s front and rear with install kits on the deal but they were never installed. My question is are 5.13s going to be a little much? the jeep will see about 60% Montana highway and 40% steep mountains. Itll see some ATV trailer towing but not much weight. It is also highly doubtful of going to a bigger tire. Ive run many a jeep with 4.56 and 4.88s with 35-38 inch tires but theyve always been trailer queens or beaters that never saw the highway. This one is different especially with a 6 speed. You seem to have the info I need before I dump a ton of money into putting the wrong gears in and end up divorced because of it. lol
