Re-parenting ourselves involves deconstructing our past - carefully evaluating what we were taught so that we can discover any lies or any unhealthy tools were given to us. It is discovering why we have problems in our lives right now. It is examining the foundation and building materials of the house of our lives that is now falling apart. This is necessary so that we can get healthy, but it can be a difficult process.

Thank you. The house illustration gave me a new perspective. Often I think I am “complaining” when trying to understand and address the issues of childhood in order to heal. Hats off Mr. Fletcher!!

So powerful! I can totally relate to the “religious box 📦” … was raised that everything was evil and if you dressed or liked anything popular … you were on your way to “hell in a hand basket”! So much guilt and shame heaped on by those oppressive beliefs. I haven’t attended church in over 12 years (cause my daughter is autistic and can’t handle the environment) BUT, since I’ve been out of that nonsense … I’ve grown so much spiritually. Now I need to continue my healing with dealing with specific issues based in shame.

The big trick is find out what the destructive things are, hard to do, identifying what thats are not healthy. Without it being negative like Tims says. I found its hard to do even with others help. Very hard to identify and find out why, very hard, without it come across as picking at my character. Reparenting with out me poking at everything i ever do! What is the truth, and even with others help is VERY TRICKY

The BOX metaphor is genius, that is exactly how your family impacts you. Your family is your world, just like the goldfish only knows his bowl as the world. When you really think about it, family can become a truly scary concept. Especially for someone who was adopted and has many types of cues indicating how they don’t really feel like a part of that family.

Family is important but yes it can be abusive as well.

I think Tim's knowledge and insights are incredibly good, helpful, and powerful. However, when he talks about bias, while he is right, all cultures have bias it is those cultural biases that give people both shared identity, and cultural norms. This is not a bad thing. I have lived in many different cultures and speak languages other than English. The trap many English speakers, especially white Middle class liberals, fall into is that it is/was only white cultures that were ever dominant. If you look around the world many people from different ethnic and religious backgrounds have dominated other people. The Mongols, Turks, Arabs, and Persians are all examples. The human condition throughout history is very tribal where one group seeks to dominate others based on economic, cultural, and religious reasons. The breakdown of shared cultural values in the West and the loss of communities is possibly the biggest component of mental health issues in the West. Not the fact that that society is far from perfect. The problem with deconstruction is having something to replace it with. You should always be wary of "throwing the baby out with the bath water."

I think you have a valid point, my own interpretation of this is, to at least be aware that some social imperfections have serious consequences on a individual level. It's not to judge those who parent you, is to discover the "why" of my "do's" and "do nots".

This is kinda niticky but you said take unhealthy tools and the lies and replace them with healthy tools and the lies. Was that intentional? @0:50 Appreciate the videos and the work you're doing.

@@ebbyc1817 Likely not intentional and just confused the word. However Freudian slips are a thing, and we all have our shadows.

@Lavinia Blajovan Good to hear it's helping. I think the bulk of mine are self fulfilling prophecies, mostly self defeating through severe criticism and shame. My thoughts are kind of blank to me. I don't have much of an internal dialog after recent stress. Kind of this survival mode pattern of routinized behavior, with occasional flashes of panic. Unhealthy coping but maybe with enough work I can get back out of this huddled up state.

The real deconstructed positions are realizing that racial and ethnic biases are generally correct, most women really are happier at home, and taboos against drinking and tattoos and gender crap are solid.
