A friend and I went to see Rambo: First Blood 2 in 1985 in the theatre. To this day, I have never seen an audience get into a movie so much. There were people standing on their seats and shouting. The part where Rambo says "Murdock, I'm coming to get YOU!" set everyone off yelling "YYEEAHHHH!!!! WOOOHOOOO" . It was magical. Everyone walked out pumped up. It was an amazing experience that I never repeated in any movie i've seen since.

27:40 That statement by Rambo was tear-jerking. I was in the USAF when this came out. My brother went to Nam. I'm old enough to remember when those who served in that war came back and were treated terribly. They were accused of killing innocent people. They were called baby-killers and spat on. I'd heard that, when Rambo said that, there were VN vets in the audience who broke out crying.

You might already know by now, but this was a sequel, not a prequel. The events occur 3 years after the events of the first one. That's why he was in prison in the beginning. Samantha asked about the budgets for 1 and 2. First Blood (1982) had a $15 Million budget and made $125.2 Million in the box office. Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) had a $25.5 Million budget and made $300.4 Million in the box office. Rambo III (1988) was in a much higher range of a $58-$63 Million budget but made $189 Million in the box office.

Unexpectedly, First Blood went from a one-shot film based on a novel to being another huge franchise with Stallone on top. That 1st installment was and always would be the most psychological of Rambo's arc. For writing part 2, Stallone on one side made sure that the character remained flawed. Cameron on the other side added the more visceral mode of Rambo's skill. One of the first Rated-R movies to put out toys, video games, lunch boxes, bookbags, etc. Followed by Rocky IV in the same year. Remarkable time for Sly as actor/filmmaker.

Yeah, and the Chinese funded the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. China even tried to invade northern Vietnam to stop the Vietnamese from crushing the Khmer Rouge and saving the rest of Cambodia. Non-Khmer Rouge Cambodians fought with the Americans, Laotians and South Vietnamese against the Viet Cong and Russia. What a messed up thing the three stronger powers did to all the people of that region. Of course it was all the Frenchies fault in the first place.

Had to watch this again with you two, I love you guys. I grew up and joined the Army due in part to this movie and a few others from the 80s along with G.I. Joe and my family military tradition, mostly my father. I served 10 years and pushed my career as much as I was able and many times said to myself, "what would Rambo do". Can't wait to see where you guys go next, much love from Ky.

I had a friend, an older guy, I used to rent a house from. He was an electrical designer. When he was there, he said he put listening devices all over the country...cities and jungles. He said whenever he went, 2 Delta guys were with him, in eyesight, 24/7. They were there to protect him, or if shit got bad, kill him!😮😮😮 He said he designed the units, and they are still active!😮😮😮

Nowadays, the general public has forgotten or never heard of the issue of unaccounted for P.O.W. and M.I.A. in Vietnam, but the P.O.W./M.I.A. flag still flies just below the stars and stripes over government facilities like the Veterans Administration Medical Center and the post office. Back in the 80s, fears that the government, in its haste to wash its hands of the disastrously unpopular war, had abandoned service men to rot in communist Vietnamese prisons was something most people had at least heard of, and movies like "Rambo," "Uncommon Valor," "M.I.A." and TV shows with main characters who were supposed to be Nam vets plugged into that shared cultural knowledge. The U.S. government's official position that the all the Americans unaccounted in Vietnam died there and that their remains were destroyed by the widespread use of explosives and incendiaries during the war has been accepted and has declared the case closed. Interestingly, there was a book about the C.I.A.'s secret operations in Laos and Cambodia that pointed out that soldiers who fought for the U.S. were indeed left behind to rot in communist prisons. However, rather than American citizens, these soldiers were from the indigenous ethnic minorities recruited, trained, funded and equipped by the C.I.A. who were promised that, if they helped the U.S., that the U.S. would help them get more equitable treatment.

The Soviets were big on FAE (Fuel/Air Explosive) bombs which can cover a fairly large area. Their attack helos can drop them almost as well as their planes can. It's amusing to see that the Soviets were using a UH-1 Huey (the one Rambo took over). The massive chase helo was an Aerospecial Puma that was cosmetically modified to look like a (fattened up) MI-24 Hind attack helo.

Good reaction video!!! Having lived through the era of US service personnel still being held by Vietnam, this movie hit upon the American conscience. Way back in those ancient days of the 1980s when the US Government was sort of relevant, Congress was actually demanding that Vietnam hand over any/all US POWs that may have been kept in captivity after the US got out of the war. Back then everyone was more or less convinced that POWs left behind were a real thing and Americans were demanding action. There would be photos appearing in newspapers/magazines of supposed US captives but always just blurry enough where you could not really tell what you were looking at. Movies were made about that sole possibility. Also, most American citizens really did not expect the US Government to do much other than pose economic sanctions for the US was not going to go back and invade Vietnam just for some forgotten people (paraphrasing Murdock). At the time it was commonly thought that Vietnam actually held American POWs and were basically using them as PAWNS/BARGANING CHIPS in the diplomatic world in order to get favorable concessions from the USA. Also, it has been suspected that a lot of the US servicemen's remains that have been returned throughout the decades, especially the early days, were of those American POWs that were never released according to the peace accords in 1973 when the USA exited the war. Probably the best movie depicting possible US service personnel still being held by Vietnam would be: UNCOMMON VALOR starring Gene Hackman MISSING IN ACTION starring Chuck Norris

The whole premise of the movie is believable, and makes sense that you would want to confirm the presence of POW's and not just go in blasting everything to get them out. As a former Green Beret, John Rambo would certainly understand the difference between a Recon Mission and an Extraction/Rescue. Seems like many people who watch this movie don't understand that and feel Rambo should have attacked all the camp guards and freed the POW's right away. That would be extremely difficult since many of them require medical attention, and trying to move back to the extraction point would compromise the mission if he had to shepherd a bunch of injured/sick prisoners.

This was such a fun time in the theatre. And the video game for the NES based on this movie was insane. Didn't have much to do with the movie, but still a fun time.

Your reactions are great! I love the Rambo Series, and as you've stated, there is a tonal shift from the first one to this one. The third one, aswell as the later movies, are more on line with this one tonally. You should also check out Hot Shots Part Deux, because it is one of the greatest spoof movies, and is basically a comedy version of Rambo II (whereas the first Hot Shots spoofs on Top Gun).

Another fun fact the part where he grabs the machine gun off the side of the helicopter and starts shooting at the Russians is what they used for the cover of the Rambo NES game

The actor Voyo Goric who played the Russian heavy (Yushin) was originally slated for Dolph Lundgren to play, but Stallone suggested Rocky IV for Dolph and the rest is history.
