What's even sadder is knowing the harsh truth that Emilia never managed to stay alive (or well) for long without others saving or helping her, and she has a history of people who love her sacrificing themselves or meeting tragic fates while trying to keep her alive and going.

Episode 23's ending was where it really hit perfect. That episodes ending in general has brought me to tears a few times. One of the best scenes in the S1 anime. (Edit: I say this not to detract from the actual ED cinematic either, I think it pairs amazing with the music and really helps convey how Emilia is feeling. I think one of the issues with the Re:Zero anime is that it isn't long enough to show every important detail.)

That Episode 23 ending scene, it just felt so tragic for Subaru. And in general, this ending was sang in the perfect melancholic tone. Thanks for bringing to light the true sadness that this ending signifies.

Stay Alive is one of my favorite EDs of any show. It’s so full of emotion and it pulls me into that feeling. I’ve actually just finished the series again yesterday so I absolutely love how you’re going over things (I was with you for arc 5 recaps but I’ve gone on to catch up haha)

For all the Subaru stans out there. Ill give you a quote that is well said from someone year ago that specifically explains everything and why Subaru was in the wrong! "A lot of Subaru defenders here, and I don't care if I get a lot of flack for this because it needs to be said. Subaru was actively crossing boundaries and robbing her of her autonomy. This is a real problem Subaru struggles with because of the potential for control RBD has. Examples of this problem can be see in the If Stories where he does it repeatedly. People are entitled to their private matters and Subaru, because of his dependence problem, started invading her private affairs. Subaru was treating Emilia like a doll, his doll, to put on a shelf and look pretty so he can gaze at and feel good at his leisure, like an emotional support object. She literally calls him out on this later in Reason to Believe. Wanting to help and having permission to help are two very different things. Boundaries people. They are important. The irony of this meme is that both Syndrome and Subaru thought adoration and effort were all that was needed for things to work out in their favor, utterly forgetting the importance of respect! Adoration without respect is just obsession. Obsession is frequently the cause for ones fall from grace. It's the case with Roswaal, was the case for Syndrome, and was nearly the case for Subaru or was repeatedly the case several times over for the IF Subaru's. Practically every single time. Subaru was essentially a stalker. His reasons don't matter, that's not Emilia's problem and shouldn't be her burden to consider. It's Subaru's responsibility to respect the people he allegedly cares about non-selfishly and thus respect their boundaries. Anyone criticizing Emilia for distancing herself from someone literally acting like a stalker is a complete smooth brain and I won't hear otherwise."

Great video, one thing that struck me about this ed is it shows how Emilia seems at peace with abandoning Subaru rather then second guessing herself or thinking about what might happen to him. She had just taken everything he had from him, his home, friends and his job (which was the only concrete reward he got for saving her) leaving him broken without even giving him a chance to say goodby and collect his things from the mansion. She knew he had nothing and nowhere to go. This was shortly after he had practically sacrificed himself saving others in arc2. She had reasons to ultimately part ways with him, but how she went about it was heartless and showed no interest in ''repaying her debt''. For example, she could have sent him to Felt who owed her a favor or to a different mansion (like most of the Roswaal's staff were) for the duration of the selection. She did this during a heated argument, so I was hoping we would see some sign of her at least regretting how she did things, but this ending makes it clear she had already left him behind mentally as well and was just looking at the lonely path ahead.

No need to get so deep to be honest. It's just a cute ending and that's good itself. She had Puck in arc 3 so she is not alone. You know who is alone regardless no matter what? That's Subaru. Guy is so alone that he is alone even when people around him. No one keeps up with his RbD or problems. Emilia can just suppress the problematic memories. She has contracts for things that remind her past. So convenient. If this ending is simple with no meaning that's a good ending. Since it's cute and that's the intent. If it's 'deep' and done intentionally then I find it pretty cringe when Subaru suffers loneliness like no one else and we are suppose to feel bad for Emilia. And yeah... Ram and Rem stated to be natural towards Emilia even though they are professional it still counts as 'normal'. So Emilia's wish itself is weird. I would rather get and ending Subaru staying in his 'place' between life and death. And we could have Satella singing(Y'now... Same VA and voice). Now that shit is lonely.

Ah, yes of course Arlam Villagers would turn on her. She, in their eyes, betrayed Subaru the only one who stood up for her and was a hero of the village. And if she turned on Subaru who was defending her against an Apartheid State Establishment, she would turn on them. Emilia was an incompetent hypocrite in the entire second capital section. She treated Subaru like a child, allowed Julius to forcibly seize her hand and kiss it followed by immediately insulting Subaru. Julius knew full well what he was doing was wrong and it was a test to see if Emilia was a pushover for his mistress. Then Emilia got upset because Subaru went to go help Priscilla. Next day Roswaal gave permission for Subaru to attend, Emilia coerced a promise out of him making it invalid. Also Roswaal was Subaru's lord, not her, and technically she was under Roswaal's protection hence unable to actually command the staff. Rem even had orders from Roswaal to let Subaru attend, and Priscilla also gave permission. And this meeting would prove crucial later on post Arc 5 after Julius lost his name. Subaru recognized through his honed danger sense that Emilia was in danger. And several side stories and later conversations with Roswaal showed he and Puck had set everything up, were willing to kill everyone except Emilia who would have been killed in retaliation, in order to force a new loop if Subaru did not attend. And things would have been worse if he did not attend and Puck and Roswaal backed off, as he would have went back to the mansion, dooming Crusch's camp, and leading to a horrid death loop fighting Sloth. Emilia also failed to properly prep for the ceremony, got walked over and verbally dominated by the other camps before Bordeaux had even opened his mouth and gave a content free speech full of empty platitudes. Even if Bordeaux hadn't opened his mouth, she had already embarrassed herself. Then Bordeaux riled up a mob of Magi and Knights against her. Did Emilia get angry with the establishment of an Apartheid State that treats Demihumans as trash with no rights and commits occasional genocide and barely allowed Felix to become a Knight and even then it took a Royal Exemption due to his water magic mastery. Nope she turned on Subaru and scapegoated him. Officially pre-Arc 5, Subaru was the only one commended for his actions in the Government Record for his actions at the Selection, by the Prime Minister no less. Julius was the only one punished over his actions that day, losing his honor, being formally reprimanded, placed in house arrest, his camp lost face, and his mistress was forced to pay an indemnity to both the Emilia and Priscilla Camps as he insulted both (LN, Anime cut out much of the dialogue and context). Post Arc-5, the duel went away from all memories and Subaru's reputation grew even more enormous to soloing the Whale and hopping on it and riding it high and Soloing Sloth. And the Selection is remembered vastly differently. Crusch's reaction to it all was: This kid's loyalty is wasted on Emilia. Roswaal gave him enormous negotiating power on his behalf, has filed the paperwork to knight him (Roswaal informs Subaru of this in Sanctuary), and is plotting something. Who is this kid? Oh and don't get me started on how Reinhard treated Felt, cause that was several levels of fucked up.
