An additional angle though that I thought about every time one of these gut-wrenching scenes played out was "okay, now the bad guys are in for an even worse beating before Reacher takes them out". Like when Franz tells Langston he's smiling because he's thinking about what the big guy is going to do to him.

I think he knew that reacher wasn’t getting a big head. But he said it anyways as a kind of comedic comment to bring some levity to the situation as he knew reacher was feeling down inside.

I'm pretty sure nearly knew that, that's why she threw him the line.

I always thought password guessing was a dumb plot point for this reason as well as many others.

@@flyingdics1But think about it... just my humble opinion, but most folks would either use or think up a Password that's related to something connected to their personality or a life experience, not just some random alphanumerical combination like a Computer would. Pets, a memorable place or event, maybe a phrase from a book, movie, play or TV show... sometimes the least probable choice IS the right choice.

We’re the books written before the requirement for number and special character? (One of my best friends loved the books and hated that Tom Cruise was cast as Reacher. My friend, Richard, died before Covid and when I came across these clips they made me smile because he would have loved the current actor. Anyway, since Richard knew the books before Covid, it’s possible that the scene was written years before the current requirements were implemented. Just a thought )

That makes it more secure. Any guess would include a special character, and/or a number. As well as an upper case. So even if 10k guesses. It would never be guessed. By anyone who did not know him. I test wife monthly. Skip two months she forgets. Only 5 simple items/locations.

Thought so too initially but realized that the time and input limits made security redundant, sort of. Like sure, you can brute force it in theory with today's algorithms, but in 2 minutes, good luck scrambling for the tools.

Exactly. Why not use something like a`831$5Z and get Reacher suck his own dick? Even if he makes a clever decision to extract the SSD and give it to a specialist to brute force the password, an 8-character lower ASCII password would require to walk through 6 quadrillion combinations. Brute forcing it would take 100 thousand years on average if they make 1 try per nanosecond.

That's the only code he could possibly crack.

With the way this was setup (2 minutes, 3 guesses) you can basically use any password you want as a bruteforcer would just instantly kill the device. Its also likely he used this password so that a person he wants to be able to access the data could still reasonably crack it. A really secure password is only necessary given infinite attempts with an infinite amount of time.

I'm not expecting anyone to hack my Gmail account, but my password is still a 10-character mix of letters, numbers, and punctuation, because that's what a password is supposed to be.
