‘39 is my favorite Queen song. Brian May wanted to write a science fiction folk song - it’s about a crew of astronauts traveling to another planet to colonize while the Earth is dying. When they return, because of the time dilation effect due to traveling at relativistic speeds, only a year has passed for them but a hundred years have passed on Earth and everyone they knew is dead for decades. “Write your letters in the sand for the day I take your hand in the land that our grandchildren knew.” Breaks my heart every time. And Roger Taylor’s high falsetto during the bridge is meant to evoke a theremin, an early electronic instrument used in a lot of classic ‘50s scifi movie soundtracks. And Queen was always very open and vocal about their love of the Beatles and their influence on Queen’s music. That’s one of the reasons why I love this album so much - it does have a very Beatley feel to it.

A few random comments: 1. Love how Freddie Mercury is credited on the album with “Bechstein Debauchery” instead of simply saying piano. 😄 2. "You're My Best Friend" is to me like a perfect pop song. I love the lower register timbre of the Wurlitzer electric piano, that soft buzz to it. 3. It took me a while to figure out "'39." You mention its 'folk tale' quality, and I agree. I think what is quite inventive about the song is that in a way it 'tricks' the listener with its mood and lyrics into envisioning something from the past--because of that folkloric quality, the vocals sound a bit melancholic and world-weary, and one can easily gather in the lyrics the song concerns a theme of separation. I initially thought the song might be about someone separated from their love by the call of WWII (e.g., 1939) or somewhere at sea ("came a ship in from the blue," "write your letters in the sand"). As it turns out, the song is a sci-fi tale about explorers who travel in space, and when they return from their journey, find that no time has passed for them but 100 years have passed for their loved ones who are now all dead--so, a very crafty use of ambiguity with the phrase "In the year of '39'..." Brian May (who wrote the song) was studying astrophysics but pursued Queen instead--I think he later went back and finished his Ph.D.

I've never been a big fan of Queen but your review has opened my eyes to them! I hear some Beatles' White Album and Abbey Road influences in this. I really like their use of layered harmonies in their songs. David Bowie/Ziggy Stardust influences, too, maybe? Every song sounds like an epic statement with a parable or story. The Who may have made the first Rock Opera with Tommy. But Queen seems to really have perfected the whole Rock - story/song genre. Thanks for turning me on to this band! 🙌

Unsurprisingly the Beatles were a huge influence on all of Queen. They grew up into adults with them, then they got to make their own music. IF you listen to Queen over successive albums they tend to have fewer and fewer obvious influences, and play their own game. Queen actually did more Progressive and 70s metal early on, then grew into what most people know as Queen.

It's funny, I read that this album had mixed reviews when it was released. Today it's considered to be brilliant by most people including myself. Brian May is such an underrated guitarist. I'm given to understand that part of Queen's mixed reception from when they were fresh was largely a by-product of the British music press focusing their hype and attention on the burgeoning punk scene, and treating Queen in particular as a scapegoat antithesis, since their choices of band name, stage presentation, and album titles suggested elitism, at face-value, even compared to other glam and prog rock acts of the time. Even though, both this album title, and its follow-up, A Day at the Races, were names taken from 1930s comedies starring the Marx Brothers, as opposed to intentional statements of elitist sensibilities. 🤣

Queen is such a great band and an amalgamation of different styles. Brian, the rocker who usually wrote mainstream rock songs. Roger, who wrote more aggressive rockers with odd time signatures. John, the one influenced by pop and R&B who brought a commercial sensibility to the band. And, Freddie, who took Broadway Rock and reinvented it.

@@moviemaestro800 Interesting theory, though UK punk was barely starting up when this record was released (the Sex Pistols had played their first gig a fortnight before). The NME had become fed up with prog by late 75 and were looking towards the US (and Bob Marley) more for inspiration (and also 'pub rock' which was a couple of years ahead of punk in its development) Despite this, the NME were quite encouraging and Sounds gave it a good review. I couldn't find the Melody Maker review but they would still have been 'on-board' with this in 1975. The UK music press certainly turned against Queen in a big way but that was a few years distant.

‘39 is set in the future. It is about a space mission. The payoff is when the narrator - one of the volunteers - gets back to Earth and sees his grandchild but, because of the nature of space travel, the narrator has only aged a year: “Oh, so many years have gone though I'm older but a year Your mother's eyes, from your eyes, cry to me.” Brian May, Queen’s guitarist, wrote the song. And you commentary and analysis of musical elements are great, you know how to express yourself with words that hits the nail on the head very precisely. I think that A Night at the Opera was the album that catapulted Queen to become Superstars. Their first three albums were all amazing, but this one took it a step further up. It was also for me the album that introduced me to Queen in the 1970's, and since then they have become my favorite band (After the Beatles). My high school years were in the 70s so I'm very familiar with all the albums you are taking us through. One difference I'm seeing now is that Pink Floyd and to a degree Led Zeppelin were making full concept ideas and sometimes when you hear one cut of theirs it's like a piece of a whole whereas with Queen and the Beatles they were writing incredible individual SONGS that could stand on their own. My favorite entire album to listen to in one sitting is Abbey Road. The funny thing is that you can't wait for it to end because the ending is so perfect! Thanks for listening and keep up the good work. (One more shout out to Crowder's "I Know a Ghost", probably not a good fit here but please find time to listen to it on your own).

One of the many great things about Queen is that every member of the band was a great songwriter in their own right. Just to add to the Marx Brothers connection, Groucho Marx apparently really loved Queen, they came onto his radar at this album when they started to name albums after his movies. When A Day at the Races came out, he sent them a letter thanking them and letting them know how much he loved the record, and he invited them to his home. They were able to visit him about 5 months before he passed away, and they performed '39 for him Acapella. It's really beautiful that Groucho, at 88, I believe, was still enjoying modern music, and truly honoring them with praise.

A classic example (live) of his soaring falsetto being a 1974/1975 performance of "In the lap of the gods". His voice is also brought to the fore towards their 1981 live performance of "Somebody to Love" in Montreal.

The amazing thing about "You're My Best Friend" is that it only exists because Freddie insisted that John Deacon write a song to include on the album. He wanted to avoid any jealousy regarding songwriter royalties. And Deacon came back with a song dedicated to his wife, and one of the most un-Queenlike songs they'd yet to record. And it was a massive hit for them, allowing Deacon to basically live off the residuals.

John had already written his first song “Misfire” which was included on the 1974 Sheer Heart Attack album. “You’re My Best Friend” came about when John took an electric piano from the studio home with him to *teach himself* how to play it. In the course of that self-instruction, at home, he wrote “You’re My Best Friend” about his new bride Veronica. When he came back to the studio with the electric piano and his newly-written song - well, John ended up playing that keyboard (as well as bass) in the recording because he wanted that sound, but Freddie hated electric pianos ! Freddie did go all out to get exactly what John wanted on those vocals though… and thus John’s *first big hit* , especially getting tons of airplay in the US.

This album has been one of my top favorites since it came out. They were genious and fantastic musicians. Queen were not only Freddie. Drummer Roger Taylor and gitarrist Brian May are also great singers as you can hear on ”I’m in love with my car” and ”39”. Bass player John Deacon wrote some of their best known songs such as ”You’re my best friend” on this album. Have you listen to Queen II ? If not, I recomend you to have a go at it. Thanks again for doing such Rich and spicy reactions and analysis . I agree on your view of ”Sweet Lady”. Otherwise an epic album.

HUH?! 'Death on Two Legs' was never a hit - because it was never released as a single. Only two singles were released from the album 'Bo Rhap' and 'Best Friend' (and both became substantial hits). Also I don't think its ever been included on any compilation album - not even their 'Deep Cuts 1973-76' album that specifically compiled lesser known/non hit single, album tracks, or 'Queen Rocks' that focused on their harder rocking material. Looking at wikipedia, they released 16 compilation albums over the last 40 years, and I don't see the song 'Death on Two Legs' included on ANY of them.

Crystal, if you get a chance I highly recommend checking out the “Classic Albums” series because they featured this album and it’s great! I also hear the influence of The Beatles on this album and Queen said they were trying to make a record like an “Abbey Road”. “Death On Two Legs” could be considered one of the first diss tracks and Freddie wrote it about the bands former manager. “Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon” is a lovely homage to the 1920s and that vintage megaphone effect was achieved by putting a microphone up to a pair of headphones in the studio picking up Freddie’s vocal. “I’m In Love With My Car” is a great rocker from Roger Taylor with a very odd time signature. Great driving song. “You’re My Best Friend” was written by John Deacon for his wife and it’s probably the most poppy and commercial track on the album. “‘39” is just BEAUTIFUL. Brian May’s folksy tune about a man who leaves his loved ones behind for space travel light years into the future. I especially love that middle part with the high harmonies which sound like a 1950s sci fi movie. My favorite track on the album and, Crystal, it never fails to get me choked up, too. “Sweet Lady” is just a good old-fashioned rocker. Nothing more. Nothing less. “Seaside Rendezvous” is very quirky and cheeky fun. It’s “When I’m 64” on steroids. Paul McCartney and George Harrison both loved the music of the 1920s and Paul did a song the same year of this album called “You Gave Me The Answer” which also has a megaphone effect and is very reminiscent of his songs “Honey Pie” and “When I’m 64”. The next track, “Love Of My Life”, is beautiful but really hard to listen to because it makes me think of my ex, my soulmate. We were on and off for about 7 years and though we’re no longer together, we are best friends and she’s the best thing that ever happened to me. The most beautiful woman inside and out I’ve ever known. And Freddie wrote this song for his soulmate, Mary, and it’s so beautiful yet heartbreaking, you know? Speaking of best friends, you are also our best friend, Crystal. And, if you ever need a hug, a laugh, a smile, a song recommendation, I’m always here for you, my friend. 🙏❤️

WOW!!! I will definitely check out the classic albums series! Thank you for always steering me in the right direction my sweet friend! Also, wow they did such a great job making this their "Abbey Road" I had no idea those were even their intentions and it definitely still shown through as Abbey Road!!! Ohhh diss tracks are all the rage now! Very interesting and honestly quite suiting that the pioneers of that space would be Queen, I thoroughly enjoyed Death on Two Legs! I liked Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon even more and that's so creative how they achieved that sound! If I had a time machine, I would love to visit the 1920's! First the 80s though, no doubt! I had a great time rocking out to I'm In Love with My Car!!! Super fun and emotionally in the funniest way! '39 probably is my favorite on this side for the time being! I was so proud to not cry during the video but you can bet in editing I was balling my eyes out ahah! I actually turned my mind around for Sweet Lady in editing! I wound up really liking it the more and more I heard it and it was because those times around I went in with that exact mentality of it being a rocker, nothing more or less! So thank you for putting it like that it definitely helps- mind set is everything! I LOVE HOW YOU DESCRIBED SEASIDE RENDEZVOUS! I'm so sorry to hear of your heartbreak! My love to you both, that sounds very difficult but I am glad you are able to still be on good terms, that's very mature and evolved of you guys! @@CrystalShannon4 Thank you for your kind words. It means much more than you will ever know. 🙏 I know how you feel about songs being short and you wish they were longer, but I think they want to leave the audience wanting more. “Norwegian Wood” is a beautiful song, but a lot of Beatles fans think it’s too short. The beauty of it, though, is it says what needs to be said in 2 minutes and moves on. It leaves you wanting more and I think Queen tapped into that, too.
