Funny enough, according to multiple statistics that Baseball Doesn't Exist recently showed, Angel wasn't a bottom 10 or even bottom 20 umpire. I think the issue is, when he DOES make bad calls, they are egregiously bad and inexcusable (most of the time), easy calls that should be impossible to miss.
@mkpanther1343
@mkpanther1343 2 ай бұрын
No, Angel was very bad, other umpires are just worse. Angel is more famous because he's been around for longer AND the hilarious racial discrimination lawsuits. Angel represents everything wrong about MLB umpiring: bad at their job, can't get fired, stay around forever, huge ego, and makes everything about them.

The stats give the same weight to calls made in the ninth inning of a 10-0 game as well as an tied game in the ninth inning. There is a lot more pressure making the correct call in the tied game. Angel always got worse as the pressure increased.

Bucknor, I think, is an issue with age and injury. He was a pretty solid ump in the first part of his career, but during the 2012-2013 season he took two fastballs to the face and head and had to sit out the rest of the year. When he came back, he was never really good anymore. And if you're MLB, you can't do anything about it because when they tried to force him out on retirement, he pulled an Angel Hernandez and threatened to sue them for racial discrimination.

The worst call I ever saw Angel make was in 2018. He called Stanton out for not tagging up on a play. My dad and I watched different replays of it for like 30 minutes when it happened. Stanton did tag up and Angel never looked at him. The defenders threw the ball to second to appeal, just in case, and Angel calls Stanton out because why would the defense appeal if he did tag up?

The odd thing about the Steve Mcmichael clip is that Angel wasn’t even the ump that threw him out. He is only portrayed like that because he is clearly looking pissed at Steve and the reputation Angel has doesn’t help him in this case.

IIRC, for the CLE/OAK one, one of the other umpires came out and said Angel knew that ball was gone but his ego wouldn’t let him change the call. That makes sense since it’s obvious to us that he missed it, but they still went with the call on the field.

3 hilarious things to me: 1) on the kinsler ejection when he said “what about that one” when the ball was a mile outside, I can’t believe the catcher didn’t fall on all fours and start rolling around, laughing his head off. I know I would have. 2) on the Harper check swing that catcher was smart. Any other ump at third and he doesn’t appeal. But he says to himself ”it’s Hernandez down there. Maybe he’ll screw it up.” Sure enough. 3) on the A’s home run the commentator said the replay was 380 pixels so maybe it would be hard to see what happened. And that was angel’s problem: he was umpiring at 380 dpi too much of the time.

I noticed the one catcher flagrantly framing balls on six straight pitches...all of them I'd call a ball until he stops doing that... That practice shows the umpire up for failure every time... If it was subtle (or moved slowly towards the zone) I might call it a strike...but don't forcefully jerk it in like that catcher did... Gary Carter was notorious for it during his career and you could tell how much the umpires loved the Orioles back then...😹😹😹
