She said "なめたらいかんぜよ / Nametara ikan zeyo" (lit. meaning "If you look down on me, it would be regrettable"), it's a reference to the Japanese gangster movie "Onimasa" from 1982. Actress Masako Natsume said that exact line there.

⚡ 💀 💕 / 🦊 ⛩ [MOA] SU-METAL will slash you. Really. [YUI] Yeah. [SU] (laughs) (Megitsune video commentary from the BABYMETAL members) Thanks for reacting to this one. Megitsune is my jam. Favorite BABYMETAL song, video and choreography. Definitely quintessential BABYMETAL and their most Japanese song. The performers pretending to play the traditional instruments in this video are dancers with the Movement Design group. Chidori Yakumo is their director and choreographer. She is the woman performing the fan dance during the breakdown. Much of the video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. That was a great breakdown of the musical components. The more you examine their stuff, the more appreciation you'll have for it. It's possible to do a similar deep dive with the lyrics for this song, or the choreography. BABYMETAL's producer Koba sent this song back to the song arranger Yuyoyuppe dozens of times before he was satisfied with it. The final mix was almost lost when Yuyoyuppe had a hard drive failure on his computer, but fortunately he was able to recover the information. So, backup your data everyone!

Aside from the instruments, there are two cultural references in this song. The first, is the Japanese folk song "Sakura, Sakura" - Sakura means cherry blossom. This is that song: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oNegec2kstqnkmQ.html The second, is, as others have mentioned, the phrase "Nametara ikan zeyo" from the movie "Onimasa". The blend of elements of Japanese folk song, catchy pop hooks, and churning metal, is done with consummate skill and artistry. Excellent reaction and incredible detailed and accurate analysis as always, I really enjoyed that - and the expressions on your face were perfect. This is such a good song in pretty much every way. When you said BABYMETAL are different, that is absolutely true, but I think they are different in one more way that you might not realise and there was just one thing you said that I do not believe applies as an absolute to BABYMETAL. You said of the studio recordings "... the sound that the band wanted you to hear and the producer wanted you to hear because it's a controlled environment ..." I would agree that is probably true of virtually every band there is - but that BABYMETAL is the exception. I feel that BABYMETAL's studio albums and recordings are more like a taster menu. They really are very good but they will only give you an idea of the songs you can dream of hearing at a live show. You will only get to hear how they should sound when you opt for the full dish and hear (and see) them performed live. The next best thing is a live performance video, but even they don't really prepare you for seeing and especially hearing them in person. They are a live performance act first, a recording artist second. In the studio recordings the musicians are anonymous, but the very worst thing about them is the effects and processing so unnecessarily done with Su's vocals. Her natural live vocals are so powerful and so good, the first time I heard her in person it was quite literally breath-taking how much better she was than in any recordings or even the best quality videos (and I think I've seen pretty much everything they've done many, many times over). On top of that you get the Kami Band doing what they do better than pretty much anybody I can think of - and you get the show, the performance, the flawless choreo and the personalities of the girls on display - but leading the whole thing, Su's live vocals.

Heard this song late 2013 and been hooked ever since. Yes this song live is so cool. And yes you have to hear them live for yourself to understand how good she is and the whole package of Babymetal. The sign they do is because when they were told of the devil horns they couldn't do it but like they do now so that is why they made the story of the fox God and it is the fox horns. The song is all about being underestimated for being female. Others will explain more. Think they were 14 and 12 in this video. Maybe 15. But Su is so good. She is to me one of the best front people, male or female. She can control the crowd, the flow of the show, the performance. This is why we call her the Queen.

Just wanted to add some cool facts about the music video locations: - The stage where they are performing is called Nohgakudo at Asagaya Shinmei-gu Shrine in Tokyo. The drum work really makes Babymetal's genre fusing stand out from other acts that they can be compared to. Meshing metal with rap, hip hop, pop, electronic music, and loads of other genres has existed for quite a while now but Babymetal keeps a solid foundation of metal in their songs just with the tempo and prominence of the drums in their mix. Melodies carry the catchiness of the tracks but the drums always maintain the intensity and pace of a metal song and that always sticks out to me and proves that it isn't just a haphazard gimmick, it's a conscious effort of melding the raw power of metal with everything that makes pop and electronic music flow naturally. Always a treat to listen to for sure.

That brought forth some great facial expressions. :-) Very good and interesting analysis, as usual. I have actually never noticed that sound in the background in the three years I have been listening to it. To me this is the most BABYMETAL of all BABYMETAL songs. It has so much that defines them, the modern sound mixed with traditional tunes, catchy hooks as well as that insanely heavy breakdown (which BTW in itself has another traditional reference, as the melody is taken from a Japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura"), interesting choreography, energetic dancing, great vocals, empowering lyrics and, of course, the cute girls with their uplifting smiles. That's BABYMETAL in a nutshell. The theme is the role of Japanese women and their inner strength, even if they sometimes may seem weak. The line Su cites when she pulls the knife out of her microphone is taken from a Japanese gangster movie. The translation is something like "if you underestimate us (women), you'll regret it". If you are interested to see how the energy of this song transfers to a stage in front of a huge crowd of Japanese fans, please check this out: www.dailymotion.com/video/x5fak8n . It's insane! My recommendation for another reaction would be one of their newer songs for a change, which is very different yet again. I'd be interested to see if you like that one as well, it's called "Shanti Shanti Shanti": kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nbeeesKFnNHGpI0.html

Of the up tempo songs this is one of their slower songs, but still has so much energy in it's delivery. With the right buildups, etc. There are many traditional Japanese elements in the MV and as someone mentioned the break down part is actually the old Japanese traditional song: Sakura Sakura. This song was years in development. My guess is it's part of a long learning process how all the musical elements in Babymetal would fit together. As this is one of their earliest songs. It's the song which has been performed at the most shows, but the traditional Enka singing style of Su-metal is actually one of the hardest for her to sing. Especially over the years as her voice changed as she grew up. It's also one of the fans favorites.

I really love this video. The amount of cultural references is really big, here are some of them Sure you know by now the origin of the "Fox God", the little girls got confused between the "devils horns" and the way you do a fox playing with shadows, but also the fox is almost a sacred animal in oriental mythology. With the cat and the tanuki (some kind of racoon dog) the fox is considered a wise and magical animal who can even transforms itself in other forms, including human. Centuries ago some women were accused to be "foxes in disguise" who deceive men playing tricks with them. Also the fox is the guardian of the shinto shrines of Inari Omikami, a popular god/goddess of rice and business among other things. At the entrance of any Inari shrine you can find always two fox statues. Also the "tunnel" of red torii is typical of those shines. The girls sometimes appears with a black kimono, and this kimono looks like a black versión or the one who wears the miko (the female priestesses of the shinto religion). The original one is white and red. Also appears elements of "Kagura Dance" who is also a shinto element, the girls says something like "sore sore sore" mimics the words of the people who carry a portable shrine in some festivals and of course, the fox mask who are pretty old and a popular item in a lot of matsuri (shinto festival typical in summer) Also if you looks the translation, appears the term "Yamato Nadeshiko", the literal translation can be "Japanese Carnation" and means the ideal of the japanese woman. Maybe this can be weird to a lot of people, but shinto religion is very important with buddhism even in modern Japan. There´s a lot of shrines, most of them really small all arround Japan, even inside a big city like Tokyo you can find hundreds of them. Sure a lot of people only goes for tradition but their influence into the japanese culture are really big. There´s really a lot more of little details but also a lot of them only can be understand knowing the japanese culture

In Japanese folklore, Kitsune (which is literally just the word for fox, but when used in English denotes their folkoric context) are fox spirits with a wide variety of powers but especially famous for being shape-shifters and tricksters. They are said to especially like taking the form of beautiful women, and during certain points in history this association has unfortunately been used in similar context to accusations of witchcraft in the West; that is, as a pejorative to attempt to control women and accuse them of being deceptive or seductive (this is only one of the many contexts these spirits have in Japanese culture, there are a truly staggering variety, but it's the one most relevant to this song haha). This track is about the girls reclaiming/rejecting this imagery to empower women and girls and it seems to have become something of a "theme song" for the band in many ways. Their version of the Fox God is an important figure in the lore of the group. If you watch interviews with the girls (especially older ones) you'll often hear them say "only the fox god knows," which at first may have been a way to avoid having to answer certain questions or to cover for a lack of English vocabulary, but is also a reference to the idea that this tricky, shape-shifting fox spirit is said the source of inspiration and power for the band and has become something of a recurring reference or joke for the girls. Their twist on the "metal horns" gesture with the fingers extended instead of curled inward is referred to as a "kitsune" for looking like a fox.

Great review! I am an older BM-head and part of the original "ONE" crowd - I first took note of them in 2013, right before their first album dropped in the US. I remember the very moment they won me over, which was when they started headbanging in their "Doki Doki Morning" video. Back then they were considered a gimmick, and it completely fucked with the metal purist crowd which pretty much universally laughed them off. Back then "Gimme Chocolate" was their stand-out piece that people would react to... in fact, right around that time there was that "Teens React" video which definitely made people more aware and contributed to their rising popularity. HOWEVER, they didn't just stand out because of their (perfect) marriage between sweet-meets-brutal. Su's voice and presence, the top-notch musicians, their great songwriters, and uncompromising perfectionism in their productions contributed greatly to their longevity and fame. l went to see them at their first US concert in 2014, at the FondaTheater in LA which is a smaller venue - holds about 1200 people, and it's been incredible to see them grow and mature since then. Unfortunately, Yui's departure from the band and the sudden death of their guitarist Mikio Fujioka kinda left a deep cut with a lot of us - their song "Starlight" is dedicated to both of them leaving - and you can definitely hear that their last album didn't live up to the quality of the first two - I have the feeling that their rise to fame got too many corporate heads involved which... just happens :-( Having said that, I will always support them, and gems like BxMxC give me hope that some of that innovative spirit will drive in their music forward. Su is a force of nature and Koba is a genius for bringing all these elements together. (Subbed)

Damn good reaction! Gotta say, as a decades long music fan, I've always been (as Su says), a "Don't think. Feel", kind of guy. Never really got into the technical aspect of music (nor do I ever read instruction manuals, usually to my detriment); however, I believe I've learned more watching a handful of your reaction vids than I have over a lifetime of enjoying music almost exclusively on a visceral level. It's allowed me to experience an even greater enjoyment & understanding of music I'm already drawn to. That is a gift & it's appreciated. I just wanted to say thank you!

The studio version of this song is quite good and very enjoyable although for newer fans I would point out that it was one of their first songs; the girls have been in Babymetal for 10 years already starting at a very young age and I think Suzuka must had been about 14 years old when this thing was recorded. So what I'm saying is that her voice has matured since their earlier stuff and that's one of the reasons I like to hear her singing live those songs nowadays. This song in particular is like classic among fans, I liked instantly and think they mixed the metal sound with pop music and some electronic elements quite well to the point it doesn't sound as weird as some other stuff they do when they mix genres; overall is quite a good song and the drumming is insane!

Mighty fine taste you have on you Sir! I think this has been my most anchored favorite of all their songs. Depending on my mood I might want Gimme Chocolate or Syncopation, other days I'd rather Starlight or PaPaYa... But will ALWAYS let Megitsune play out :) This band reinvigorated my life. I had no idea I was missing something, thought I was pretty happy... I cry so often whilst listening to BabyMetal. Happy Tears, It's like a long lost brother is walking through the door. I don't why it hits me so hard (I don't understand the words and that seriously doesn't even play on my mind) It just feels like something washes over me and fills me completely. Happy Scales get all busted up and need to be sent of for re-calibration. That Darn Fox Hole :) Keep up the good work. I've spent the last year just trawling youtube looking to share other people first experiences to it. Relive the discovery. So So Good :)

The melody during the breakdown where she sings slowly "Kitsune kitsune watashi wa megitsune" is from a traditional Japanese folk song/poem called "Sakura" aka "Cherry blossum". They also play that melody as an intro to the song when they do it live and you'll often hear the crowd chanting with the off-beats. Also, I miss Yui and Moa's voices together

Don't know if anybody mentioned, yet. The break down / Part C is a traditional Japanese melody/song. It's called Sakura (believe it or not). You can find some versions on KZfaq. The first time I was listening to this song, this took me by surprise. I think they've done a really good job by making this folk song their own little version. Cheers, stay safe.

Great analysis. This (along with songs like Karate, RoR) is a BM favourite and almost always played and gets the crowd going. Many others will have explained already about fox/vixen, that this song pulls on traditional japanese mythology and musical techniques and instuments being pulled into metal. And the look on your face when she pulls a blade from inside her microphone :D She says "Otomewa nametara ikanzeyo", literally "Maidens/Women, if you underestimate (us), it would be regrettable", which is also famously said by Masako Natsume's character in the 1982 yakuza film "Onimasa". I would look for your own benefit at one of the (newer) concert live versions of this song. As always we say BM is meant to be heard/seen live. Su herself has said in an interview last year this is one of the hardest songs for her as she has to sing complicated and difficult vocals while dancing hard and fast. Imagine singing opera while running on a treadmill (and the speed is varied). There are alot of fan recordings but these sadly are not great. Probably the cleanest is from the BBC at Glastonbury last year when BM peformed (the first japanese band to ever be invited). Sadly the BBC screwed the pooch and Moa's mic level was to low and there was also issues with the band audio but it gives you an idea of how they perform this live in 2019/2020. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n7Gjra2Y1JiyYWg.html

The history of the band is interesting, and ties in to some of what you are observing. Babymetal was built specifically to make use of Su-metal's talents. Suzuka Nakamoto had already been a child star at 5 in the advertising world. Her agency was grooming her as an Idol, when one of their scouts realized she was capable of something bigger than that. His dream was to do something that had never been done before--a Kawaii Metal ("cute metal") band, and Babymetal was born. This is a highly condensed version of the history, and the other fans will no doubt fill in tons of detail. Some of them have recommended "Karate", which is more recent and, I think, their best MV so far. Here is the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdx0ZqZ5ppqcoHU.html&pbjreload=10

Hi, Chase. I subscribed to your chanel since i watched your rondo of nightmare video reaction and now i remember that you're one of so many reactors that have the deep analysis that i can actually enjoy the most, as a music listener, as a music instruments player, as a live perfomer your every detail analysis was sooo spot on! This is just Megitsune bro, (not like I'm trying to say the word "just" literally) i love this song, one of my top 5. This song is so crazy simple catchy yet so complex and you actually could bring the real details deal about this song! Please react to -legend 1997 Headbanger Makuhari live -Akatsuki budokan live -or if you like some progressive rock you can react to "Tales of Destiny" Audio only. -Tamashii no rufuran, for her best singing in my opinion, Or for some crazy live crowd interaction, react to "Road of resistance" Live in Japan! Stay safe, stay metal!

Love your analysis, as always. People can like it or not, but even those who don't should be able to appreciate how good the band, Su and the composition of these songs are. And: Finally someone who picks up on the fact that her mic was the tanto blade all along xD. Unfortunately all these producers of Japanese bands who don't play their instruments themselves have the bad habit of overproducing the songs in the studio versions. With Babymetal it's always a world of difference between the album/MV version and the live version. Just listen to Headbanger. It's one of the songs I least enjoy on the album but one of the songs I most enjoy live. It's like a pop song with metal instruments in the background on the album, but when it's performed live it's way more fleshed out because of the band and because her vocals aren't as smoothed out and forcefully pushed to carry the song alone, if that makes any sense. I always think the best song/performance for hearing Su's voice and to show how good the band is Akatsuki live (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nZhjapV0mraufIE.html ) or if you want more of a ballad and want to try testing your resolve not to tear up, No Rain No Rainbow (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pqqXpNJny8nQmY0.html ). This version is from Su's hometown of Hiroshima, her 20th birthday concert. You should read the lyrics of it (du-metal.blogspot.com/2014/09/no-rain-no-rainbow.html ) to really understand the whole story that makes this performance so special.
