David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before........just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent. Loved your reaction and your take on it Xplozone! . I remember showing this to my 14 years old and he was blown away, just like your son. I get chills down my spine every time I hear that version. It´s a masterpiece!

I also look to reactions to this song. The astonishment on the face of a young boy nearly 60 years after its first release demonstrates the original writers were amazing poets and prophets and Disturbed’s ability to make one of greatest covers ever and relevant to a new generation. Besides the emotions I get from hearing this cover song, the conversation between father and son discussing it afterwards also pulled heart strings. Bravo

Hey guys! Simon and Garfunkel released, Sound of Silence in 1965. I was probably the age of your son when it came out and of course rock and roll of any kind had a huge impact on me. I loved S&G's version and I still do because it transports me back to my younger days reminding me of what I was doing at that time. When I first bumped into Disturbed's cover, I was so hesitant to listen to it but after listening, I adopted it. I too felt that it delivered the same message in a much more powerful way. If you were to listen to the two versions, while listening to S&G's version you might think that "Yeah, it has a spot on message" and then you'd move on. After listening to David sing Disturbed's version you'd probably take a seat and wonder, "Holy man!!! What has happened to us?" S&G's version was a warning but Disturbed's is a "You didn't listen the first time, ignore this!". David was ill the night he performed on Conan. They wanted him to cancel but he wouldn't. That is why he was sitting down because they were afraid he would pass out while singing if he stood. I also read that the guy playing the piano is actually a guitarist in Disturbed. They say that Simon & Garfunkel’s version was a whispered warning and this is a battle cry. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this and the official video. Yes there was a little bit of auto tune that the show put on because he was sick and he was P**sed. David says that he won’t record anything that can’t be done live. My husband passed away a few years ago. He was on Hospice. I’d take pics outside to show him or show him videos. I put really good headphones on him and played this. I glanced over to see his reaction- he had tears rolling down his cheeks. He said “thank you for that.”

Simon & Garfunkel brought the lyrics, for which I am grateful, and I heard the song all my life, but it was just a fluffy background song. Their presentation didn't really give it weight, to my child's ear. And then Disturbed brought it and sang it in a way that caught my attention and it meant something to me. The lyrics belong to S&G, but (for me) the performance belongs to Disturbed. Lovely to see the two of you sharing your love of music together!

I think both versions are great. It was written by Paul Simon in 1964. A year after JFK was assassinated. It was at a time where more people were questioning the power of the people in charge.
