You have to say fair play to Southgate for this squad. Everyone thought he’d pick out of form Henderson, Rashford, Chilwell. Unless Wharton or Jones do something that leaps them ahead of Mainoo and Gallagher I expect the 7 to drop out to be Trafford, Quansah, Dunk, Jones, Wharton, Eze, Toney. Although personally I think Eze has jumped ahead of Maddison and would prefer him to go, but realistically I doubt either would get much if any game time in the tournament.

With 5 subs allowed , and England having so many gifted attackers in the squad, this could be an important tactic for England.

Wharton and Mainoo are different types of players. Wharton is deeper lying, pinging balls about and quarterbacking. Mainoo is a true box to box and can carry the ball from defence to attach

England's achilleas heel has always been defence and its the reason why they will as usual go out in the knockout stage when they play a half decent side. The likes of Branthwaite, Dunk, Guehi, Quansah and Konsa (and Tomori who has not even made the squad) have not been properly blooded because of Southgate's blind loyalty to Maguire.

I agree but the dropping Toney shout I'm not sure. I know he hasn't been in his best but he is more Kane(esq). I mean Kane works with pacy and agile wingers. For me, a Gordon Watkins Saka front 3 just doesn't do it for me. If Kane is say injured or I wanna rest him, Toney goes in. (Also has the best penalty conversion rate in the Squad)

The fact is that England have loads of young quality players , especially in attack, and so some good established players have to miss out. Both Palmer and Gordon are in better form.than Rashford. Bowen can come on for Saka if required, and Watkins for Kane. These are dynamic fearless players, determined to do well.

I think Southgate knows his 23, and has got some young players as backups if there’s injuries. Expect Trafford, Quansah, Wharton etc to really just be there for the experience of being around the set up

Starting foden lw palmer rw and bellingham centrally not only gets all our best players on the pitch in positions they have played for their clubs this seasons but allows them to be fluid and loose with their positions as they can all interchange comfortably

What formation are we playing? 4-2-3-1 looks the most likely: stones Maguire shaw and walker, rice and trent at the base of midfield , foden, Bellingham and saka/palmer behind kane.

If you don't think Foden should play on the left then who does? You said he, Bellingham, Rice and Palmer have to start then where does he fit in? England's luxury problem is that there are too many top class attackers so inevitably some will miss out and some may have to play out of position. They can't all play!

I think saka and grealish offer similar abilities same with Gordon and Palmer so one of each plays at the same time, foden rice and Bellingham in the midfield, and I would love to see Trent play higher up even if we go three at the back but if we do that we need to be really comfortable in defence

Good stuff Buvey. I feel a little for Southgate as some big player/s are going to have to be either dropped or accommodated. You bring it up with respect to Foden and I think I agree with you that he needs to play centrally. The only way that realistically happens is getting Rice to sit and Bellingham playing a bit further back. I don't mind that setup tbh - it neuters Rice/Bellingham a bit but they're probably among the most versatile players in these front six positions. Should both remain influential to a decent level.

If Declan Rice gets injured, England are frighteningly thin of a proper defensive midfielder. If City didn't ruin Kalvin Phillips, then England would have been in a better way. They probably should have included Eric Dier into the initial squad with his ability to play defensive midfielder. He also has been good for Bayern Munich.

Wharton is not there to make up the numbers. He’s a quality player

Foden on the left to accommodate others in central midfield is slightly reminiscent of Scholes on the left to accommodate Lampard and Gerrard. Like Scholes, Foden is good enough to make it work fine, but that's part of the problem. It meant that he was ALWAYS being played out of position. And it was probably a large reason for him quitting international football before he'd even turned 30.

England can win the tournament just by individual brilliance but the best way to play is high press( at least for first half,) as most of the players are familiar with what to do. Forcing a goal thru error is easier than creating one. Force opp to go long and high will suit England defenders as well. Few points to note 1. Don't allow left back to be isolated one on one. It is England biggest weakness. 2. If man marking is required, give the job to Mainoo. (KDB will know why) 3. Do not have to play both Bellingham and foden from the start. Balance is most important. 4. If chasing a goal, Eze and Palmer can be trusted. 5. If Watkins is playing, Trend or Madison has to be with him. 6. Trusted penalty takers has to be on few mins before extra time full time. Good luck!

i think a midfield 2 of trent and rice would be perfect especially with jude and foden playing ahead of them. We’ll likely play with foden left, jude as a 10 then rice and someone behind so trent for me is the best choice, rival fans will say “oh he’s played in midfield twice” but no, if you’ve watched liverpool this season he’s basically played as a number 10 at times and everyone just fills in around him. If we struggle to get foden or saka on the ball on the wings trent’s creativity will be so important and yes he might lose the ball a few times unnecessarily but that’s what england need, how many times have we passed the ball around pointlessly for 10 mins then lose and concede without even creating a chance

The fact is, England have the highest scoring winger in premier league history if you exclude penalties, the second highest scorer for England of the players today, the highest assist provider, the player who almost single handedly dragged England to their first final in over half a century, the most reliable England player in high stake competition games, and so clearly most dangerous attacker in English football today not in the squad let alone the team. The idea any team can succeed to win a competition without a player that can deliver so much reliably to their game and be so influential to a teams success whether the rest of the team do not perform so well or not is called wishful thinking. We've seen Southgate take risks in finals and failed at every turn. He is unable to make constructive risks and is strongest when he uses common sense. Common sense would tell you Jude Belligham has excelled partnering Vinicias Junior at Real Madrid winning the Spanish League and in the final of the Champions League which should be amazing for England as England have a similar player to Vinicias Junior in the name of Raheem Sterling in the England team meaning they can understand each other very quickly and form an equally powerful partnership for the England attack. This is common sense. But what does he do? He takes Sterling out of the team depriving England of that obvious lethal attacking partnership. Common sense would tell you that with England getting to a final with Sterling as the driving force giving defenders nightmares on one wing and Saka still developing on the other, when Saka finally develops as he has today and so much better than that final and able to give defenders nightmares like Sterling, England with these two wingers would be giving defenders sleepless nights on both wings and be even more lethal than when getting to that final, so you play them both again now as a bigger threat than before. This again is common sense. But no, Southgate has decided to not play Sterling and play a lesser threat that has achieved nothing, but some good games for an average club for one season and has no experience of high stakes competition, or an alternative that has played for England, but achieved nothing special when playing for England and is not even the first choice for his club team. It's astonishing stuff. As for Palmer, a player that has scored an average number of goals in open play scoring 10 penalties he will not take for England to push up his stats, but more importantly failed to make the Man City team and was then sold, because although he was known by Man City to score goals is too much of a defensive liability to have in a team that wants to win things or be a top team, why in the world would a manager with any sense ignore these facts and like a novice want to consider putting him in his team just because pundits, commentators and the media choose to ignore the obvious facts and claim the manager who sold him has made a mistake despite the fact this manager is winning everything under the sun. Palmer does not understand defense, does not participate in defensive responsibilities, does not know how to balance defensive and offensive responsibilities and has no interest in understanding or participating in defensive responsibilities at a time in football when all 11 players have offensive responsibilities and all 11 players have defensive responsibilities and the team least efficient at utilising all 11 players for these offensive and defensive objectives loses. That is modern football and what is understood by all the top teams in league and international football as necessary to win competitions or leagues. But Southgate obviously thinks he is the exception and wishful thinking will get him over the line. Without Raheem Sterling in the team, I predict England will be knocked out of the competition in the Quarter finals at these Euros as we saw proved when Sterling did not play in the last World Cup, mark my words, so I won't even bother watching the games managed by stupidity that makes no sense forced on the manager by pressure from the media. Why do all four have to start? Palmer to come on off the bench for me, the guy has been proving a point to Pep all season, have him come off the bench with a point to prove to Southgate. Another thing, just because Rice has been playing slightly more forward for his club and Bellingham it doesn't mean they can't be occupying space further back. Rice is very good defensively and breaking up play, Bellingham for me is a natural box to box midfielder, Phil the most natural no 10. Both Bellingham & Rice are intelligent enough to work as the double pivot, meaning they won't leave a defence over exposed. What we can't do is have Bellingham no 10 and shoe horn Foden as LW, it just feels forced and imbalanced especially when we have no fit LB too. It's a great headache for Southgate to have anyway

Am I going crazy?! Everyone on every video I’ve watched has glossed over the left back situation and said “we have no other options at left back”. Tyrick Mitchell!! He’s played a lot and built his form up to a really high level. Yes he’s inexperienced but shaw needs back up due to his injury profile in recent times. Playing a right footed rb/cb like joe Gomez or Kieran Trippier is a big mistake! It slows our build up play down as they tend to cut inside early and stifle the winger ahead of them by not giving effective over/under lapping threat for them to use. If shaw isn’t fit I predict England to look slow and vulnerable to counter attacks as teams can double up on our right side knowing that the threat on England’s left is blunted. Tyrick Mitchell is not necessarily the best or biggest name Southgate could’ve selected but it’s a massive mistake to think a right footed rb can act as cover for Luke shaw. This has me worried and I worry about the ball knowledge of popular KZfaqrs as barely any of them have highlighted this

I'm not English or an English fan but I do enjoy the football discussion. I actually think Rice is a better 6 than Mainoo and will sit not Mainoo. Mainoo plays box to box for United. I also think Maddison's form has been terrible recently and while thats mostly down to Spurs getting battered everywhere they go, Eze is just in so much better form. Curious to how you fit Saka Palmer and Foden in. You say you don't want Foden LW you won't watch the game if that happens but Palmer is a 10 and RW and Saka is exclusively RW so if both of them have to start and Foden also has to start... Where does Foden go for you? How do you fit in all 3?

So let's not belittle Jude Bellingham performances for Real Madrid Could make the argument that Cole Palmer is benefiting from Chelsea having a new group of players and others being out of form. Rashford always plays well for england, i know for club he’s not deserved the call up but surely u bring him to this camp to see where he’s at cus a lot of players play at different levels for club and country. Im glad that Hendo wasnt selected this time, but youre way off the mark saying that Rice is 5x the player he ever was. Hendo won everything there is to win at club level and was an inspirational captain of one of the best teams the world has seen this century.
