Caesar evolved into more of a title, later adopted in other languages such as Kaiser in German and Czar in Russian.

Yep. Later Emperors took the title Augustus, with their heirs being named Caesar.

@@stevencass8849 The crushing majority of Roman emperors were Caesar Augustus. Added at the end of their already long name (at least three names). There were cases were there were one or more Augustus and at the same time one or more Caesar, but those were exceptions.

The fact people don't know such a significant historical fact, only goes to show why we as humans are so keen to repeat the failures of just 30 years ago as if we are making "new" mistakes. "Those who do not know history, are doomed to repeat it."

A great Russell Crowe movie made just a couple of years after this, at the height of his fame, is ‘Master & Commander’. And it’s about the British: he plays the captain of a Royal Navy sailing ship at the time of Nelson and the Napoleonic Wars. It’s also got Paul Bettany. Unfortunately it came out the same year as the final Lord of the Rings movie so although it got nominated for loads of awards it barely won any - any other year it would have done really well.

Russell Crowe is New Zealand born and lived a fair chunk of his early life in Australia. It is claimed he calls Australia home but either never got accepted for citizenship through not living here enough years consecutively or only got it recently. I believe he has applied before though. I have heard but cannot confirm he is the only non-Australian to feature on an Australian stamp in recent decades other than the Queen, probably the new King now as well of course. His breakout role was arguably in a brutally violent Australian film called Romper Stomper that got him his start in Hollywood. Not that I recommend Dawn Marie should react to Romper Stomper. It is a little too obscure to attract a KZfaq audience I bet, but I would call it required viewing for anyone wanting to see a good cross-section of Crowe's acting roles over his career.

That moment when Maximus revealed himself to Commodus in the Arena, I got chills up my spine. That declaration of vengeance was terrifying.

I love it, too, but it could've been better. I wasn't thrilled with the initial reaction shot of Commodus. Even when I saw it in the theater I felt like Ridley should've been in tighter on Commodus so we could easily see the shock, and constrained terror on his face. Not a super close-up, that would've been cheesy, but I would've gone in tighter by at least half the distance. Watching it on the small screen makes it even less perceptible.

@@CodeeXD Every once in a while I come across some dingbat like you, who thinks that the only people who can pass judgements on art, or sports, or whatever, are those who actually participated in those endeavors at a high level, if not the highest level, themselves. Well I've got news for you. Nearly ALL of the paid, professional journalists (e.g. film critics), analysts (e.g. sports commentators), and judges (e.g. Olympic event judges for gymnastics, figure skating, etc.) have NEVER participated in the endeavors they respectively cover, at even the most fundamental levels. So save your ridiculous ire for all of them. As for me, I actually have directed a feature length film, and several short films, so go pound sand.

Ridley Scott knows how to make a movie. And I agree Joaquin Phoenix is a great actor, the cast in this with Russel Crowe is stellar. Marcus Aurelius was a real Roman Emperor who died in 180 A.D. and his son Commodus became Emperor from 180 A.D. to 192 A.D. Commodus spent lavishly on games in the Colosseum to the point of almost bankrupting the Empire, he then taxed the wealthy heavily and they conspired and had a wrestler named Narcissus strangle him to death.

Yeah, two movies tackled the reign of Commodus. This one, and the much earlier "Fall Of The Roman Empire". Neither was historically accurate, but one actual thing about Commodus was he was known to fight in the arena for sport (the real Commodus seems like an irresponsible jock type), but for elite Romans, this was like slumming it among the dregs of society. So they had a coup, and he got strangled in his bath by some wrestler. Gladiator still works as a good movie, just like Braveheart - you have to just put away the need for historical accuracy to enjoy it.

There was once a Senator who opposed the "Games" but once he was brought to watch the barbarity he could not take his eyes off of it. ( perhaps he was a chronicler only. Nuff said) He wrote, " This is the fate of Rome". Immorality for the sake of entertainment is the essence. The times way back then two thousand years ago are similar to today without the gore. @@RobertLutece909 As far i know almost all, if not all of those fights were not for the public (because it would hurt his reputation - a gladiator had a much much more lower rank, than even a soldier! - a gladiator was usually not a free man - only one inch more than a slave (because of the crowd who had their favorite gladiators - just like today people have their favorite baseball-players and soccer-players). So as i said: as far i know, he fought in the arena usually without any audience (at least not the common people). Also i have to mention: he didnt fought with real weapons. Over the time the roman empire invented weapons and tools just for the gladiator fight, to make the fights last longer, and increase the chance for survival. Other as portrayed in movies, gladiator-fights were mostly not deadly. Because every gladiator had his own fanbase, and the fans didnt wanted to see their heros ''die'' in the arena. So gladiator-fights were really not as dangerous as portrayed in movies. It was much more comparable with ''wresting'' today - where it looks like a wrestler jumps with his whole weight to the spine of the opponent - or hits the opponent hard (while he is stumping to make a loud noise, to make it seem it was a hard hit). Same was for gladiators. Sure because they used weapons, injuries still weren't avoidable. For that reason a highly educated and trained doctor was on the side of the arena, and immediately gave the gladiator the best treatment they knew back then (not a lot of people know that nowadays). So keep a gladiator alive was absolutely priority for the one who owned the gladiator, for the people, for the men of power, and for the one who owned the circus. There were very few exceptions of that. For instance when a gladiator had to fought someone who had a death sentence (that was rare, because death sentences usually were executed in a different way). Or the gladiator itself did some criminal act (than it could be a fight for life or death - but still: that was very rare... criminal acts had usually very precise penalties - so these were one-in-a-million-exceptions). What was often on the other hand was: animal-killings. Gladiators indeed fought a lot of animals - even exotic animals like giraffs. The collosseum needed thousands of animals a year, just for those things. Also the gladiators were usually not very muscular. Over the centuries they learned to have a different eating plan - making them a bit fat. They recognized, that a layer of fat can actually be an additional protection for the organs, besides the armor itself (fat gladiators had a bigger chance to survive bigger injuries - probably also because of the higher blood volume which comes with it). Historians found that out not to long ago. So yes, almost everything is portrayed wrong about gladiators in movies.

Favorite film ever ! It's absolutely brilliant. Incredible performances, direction, cinematography, fantastic narrative and a superb score by Hans Zimmer. Chills AND tears every single time I watch this masterpiece, Gladiator has one of the most powerful endings that I've ever seen

Not many ppl have seen this one but Russell Crowe is good in it, Master and Commander ( Far Side of the World ). Joaquin Phoenix also does a good Joker. Maybe not as good as Heath Ledger but I still liked his Joker.

Joaquin and Heath are acting out two different characters. Heath is doing a "realistic" comic book character in a psychological crime drama. Joaquin is doing person suffering with mental and emotional issues in a toxic society that fosters them but using a comic book characters names to bring in general audiences that otherwise wouldn't watch on the big screen. Both are absolutely stellar performances but two different characters.

You'll love _L.A. Confidential_ with Russell Crowe, which is a magnificent movie in its own right. _A Beautiful Mind_ is another great one, although more psychological than action oriented.

Master and Commander. Movie trivia time. When the police officer played by Russell Crowe is questioning that black boxer hitting the punching bag on the porch of his house you can see a store in the background that is Bob's Market. Bob's Market is the Toretto grocery/lunch counter in Fast and Furious.

Commodus was such a crappy person that his name became the word for the toilet and to this day, a toilet is often referred to as a commode.

The backstory was that Maximus had once been the lover of Commodus' sister, but both in the end had married someone else. Probably why Marcus Aurelius thought of him almost like a son-in-law.

Ceasar = Emperor. Marcus Aurelius, emperor 161-180 AD. Commodus, emperor 177-192 AD. Father and son actually ruled together until Marcus's death. The movie takes huge freedoms with history, but it's very entertaining. Great film, one of the best in its genre. It's mostly shot in Malta. The great British actor Oliver Reed (Proximo), a legendary alcoholic, drank himself to death during the filming They had to fake part of the end scenes with technique and stand-ins. Go to Malta and ask for his place of death. It's a bar and you can sit in his chair.

Just to add an extra note, since Julius Caesar all Roman emperors took the title of "Caesar."

All Roman emperors were called Caesar, since the first one (Augustus), was the adopted son of Julius Caesar. The word was later borrowed into many other languages to mean "emperor", including the German Kaiser and the Russian tsar. Rome did not have kings since the founding of the Republic in 509 BC when the last king was expelled - Julius Caesar (whose personal name was actually Gaius) was assassinated in 44 BC partly because of the suspicion that he was going to have himself crowned king. So the emperors used other titles while exercising more power than the kings had ever had.

In fact the title of "king" ("rex") was so loathed, that they maintained some of Republican political traditions, such as the emperor being a "primus inter pares" ("first among equals") and a consul for life, formally sharing power with another consul every two years (although that was a mere gesture, which Caligula ridiculed when he appointed his horse as his colleague consul).

Not only was the "Caesar" part a title rather than a name, but upon taking power most Roman emperors changed their entire names for symbolic reasons. "Augustus Caesar's" birth name was Octavian, "August" meaning honored or renowned. To avoid calling himself king (rex) for the reasons mentioned, he also adopted the title "princeps," which meant simply "first citizen," and from which the later word "prince" was derived. Marcus Aurelius' birth name was Marcus Annius Verus. Commodus was actually one of the few who kept his actual name while emperor.

Very good breakdown but Caesar also meant ruler even before Caesar. He himself had a word play in one public exchange a few days before his assassination. They asked if he was Rex(king) and he said no I am Caesar.

@@victormanteca7395 No proof that he actually made his horse consul. But a historian noted that at the time, a horse with a little help from a stable boy would perform the role of consul fine.

The Colosseum had a capacity of about 50,000 when it was operating, so it's pretty comparable in size to modern stadiums, and of course served as a template for them. That's pretty amazing for a structure that was built without cranes and other machinery 2000 years ago.

They did with Germania and Britannia. And by the way, Scotland was one of the only places the Romans could not conquer. They claimed the people were too wild. They lost an entire Roman legion in Scotland. A Roman legion consisted of 4,000 to 5,000 men.

Oliver Reed,who played the Gladiator trainer,died during filming-for the few people in the world who don't know-Dawn,he was a good, infamously alcoholic,actor who'd appeared in crap films only since at least the mid 80s,who,thankfully ended his career-and life-on this belated highlight❤️👍🎩

He made a great but little known film in 1966 called “The Trap”. I watch it from an old tape every so often. One of my favorite all time movies.

It's actually really nice to see someone happy about that ending (even though I start crying as soon as the fight with Commodus ends). Not exactly 'feel good' so it's cool to see someone consider it a positive result. One more reason why I enjoy your reactions and hearing your view on iconic scenes like that one.

Caesar, is a title used by Romans for any Emperor. Rome had many Caesars.

Oddly enough that's true. However it did _originate_ as a family name. It actually was Gaius Julius Caesar's given name, (the Julius Caesar of Shakespeare fame) and was a family name that came from his Great Grandfather, Sextus Julius Caesar. After Julius it gets complicated. He adopted Gaius Octavius as his son, and after Julius' _Brutal_ death, Octavious adopted his name as per Roman naming conventions. He eventually (after the Triumvirate) becomes Emperor and is officially "Gaius Julius Caesar Agustus" although he styled himself Gaius Caesar and he was well known as Octavianus. Then comes a period of time when every Roman Emperor was either named "Caesar" by their Emperor-father, or later adopted that name when they became Emperor to add a little bit of legitimacy to himself.

@@ACNelson-officialchannel Many things where wrong. Balian was not a bastard, Reynald and Guy where not Knight's templar, Balian had to be convinced by the priest depicted as a coward in the movie to defend Jerusalem, Sibilla married Guy willingly and stood by his side, to name a few.

Oliver Reed (the gladiator school owner) died during filming, before all his scenes had been shot. So, some of the scenes he is in are actually CGI images. At the time it was a much celebrated use of the new (in its infancy) technology.

That's got to be the first time I've heard anyone think Marcus Aurelius name is Uranus lol. As for Julius Caesar, that was a real name for the person, he did so many changes to the Roman Republic which ended up turning into an Empire, that his last name became a title that all future rulers of Rome used, a term that was also used long after Rome fell.

Yes, even today the maggots of certain species of fly are used to clean rotting flesh from a wound to prevent gangrene and sepsis. Physicians can't clean certain wounds well enough without removing more flesh than necessary, but maggots are picky eaters who only eat dead, rotting flesh, and will scour the wound clean of it, leading to improved outcomes. This isn't often needed, but when it is, it is the best option available.

This movie is heavily inspired ( to the point of almost being a loose remake ) of a film that came out in the early 1960s called “The Fall of the Roman Empire.” It stars Sophia Loren…which is more than enough reason for me to like it!!😊

As I see no one has mentioned them yet, the Roman senator Gracchus was played by highly respected British actor Derek Jacobi. In 1976, Jacobi played the title role in the TV short series, I Claudius, still considered one the best TV series ever done. Secondly, Marcus Aurelius was played by another highly respected British actor, Richard Harris. Like Derek Jacobi, Richard Harris has a long list of great roles to his credit, including Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series, The Guns of Navarone, the 1962 version of Mutiny On The Bounty, and twice as King Arthur in a 1967 musical Camelot and a dramatic version made for TV, also called Camelot.

One of his earliest roles was in “the bible - in the beginning” from 1966 which covers genesis from creation til abrahams commanded yet interrupted sacrifice of Isaac. In that film he played Cain.

When the gladiator spits (or drools, perhaps) out blood after Maximus hit his foot, I'm assuming that the blood is from the opponent inadvertently biting his tongue. The music score, including the ending song "Now We Are Free", was a collaboration between film music composer _par excellence_ Hans Zimmer and singer/songwriter Lisa Gerrard, the latter being known both for her solo career and for being part of the music group Dead Can Dance. It's unusual to see a reactor who finds the ending happy! While I am inclined to agree with you, most bawl their eyes out. Thanks for another enjoyable reaction, Dawn!

The fact that people pay to see combat sports like MMA proves people do like to watch real life violence (even toned down by rules so it's not an actual slaughter). People love the fury, anger, the sight of life in peril. Of course, not so much when it's themselves or their loved ones, facing the real thing.

21:33 actually there IS something preventing the tiger getting to the people holding the chain…the fact there’s a loop anchored to the ground If the tiger turned to them, the chain would go slack allowing them to pull further back, and then there’s be less chain on the tiger side of the loop, thus the tiger couldn’t actually reach them. And if the tiger passed the loop, pulling the chain through a 180 turn requires more force, so the guys would have an easier time pulling holding the chain

Did you get to see the film crew in the crowd scene during the "Are you not entertained" quote? Blue jeans and a white T-shirt. There was a 1964s film called The Fall of the Roman Empire that had the same storyline (kind of). It has a great cast. The first fight in the arena always reminds me of Life of Brian. FYI - The real Commodus was killed in his bath.

Caesar was initially a cognomen, or what we might call a nickname. When Gaius Julius Caesar was assassinated, much of his wealth and titles (including his name and the cognomen Caesar) were bequeathed to his nephew, known to history as Octavius. When Octavius became the first Roman Emperor, he was known publicly as Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus. Later Roman emperors were also were bequeathed or they adopted the name Caesar for themselves.

the real-life Commodus really DID fight in the arena, which would've been seen as extremely inappropriate on its own, but he would also have the best weapons and armor, while his opponents would usually be crippled and equipped with blunted swords, which was absolutely hated. It was seen as undignified and unsportsmanlike. Which may sound weird, but bloodsports are still sports, and there's a big difference between, say, a fair boxing match, and someone beating a handicapped person because they wanna feel like a boxer.

The rulers commonly known as The Five Good Caesars were: Nerva (96 - 98), Trajan (98 - 117), Hadrian (117 - 138), Antoninius Pius (138 - 161), and Marcus Aurelius (161 - 180). All of them of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty which also included Lucius Verus, Marcus Aurelius' brother and Co-Emperor (161 - 169), and Commodus (180 - 192). After Commodus was killed the dynasty came to an end. After that, there was chaos and began "The Year of the Five Caesars".

Julius Caesar WAS his last name. He adopted his nephew, Octavius, who took his uncle's last name. Once Octavius became the first emperor after Julius' death, the senate gave him the name of Augustus, and since he was using his uncle's last name of Caesar, from Augustus on, it also became the title of all the future emperors.

Great movie. This movie has one of my favorite quotes "I don't pretend to be a man of the people but I do try to be a man for the people" by Gracchus. You know the actor who play Gracchus played Claudius the emperor that is mention in the movie in a great mini series I, Claudius. Other great Russell Crowe movies you should see is A Beautiful Mind, L.A. Confidential ,The Next Three Days. Other great period movies are Rob Roi 1995 with Liam Nissan and The Count of Monte Cristo 2002 (Also with the actor who plays the old emperor)

R.I.P. to Richard Harris. My first role to see him in was Harry Potter and love his role in The Count of Monte Cristo which was Henry Cavill 2nd role in. That is such a good film you should check out. Richard passed away before filming the second Harry Potter film. Dawn you should check out the show Spartacus. The first actor to play Spartacus passed away from cancer. Liam the second actor that played Spartacus had Andy’s blessing in the hospital to get the role to replace him.

Okay, the original "Caesar" was Gaius Julius Caesar that got assassinated by a group of Roman senators in 44bc. Julius Caesar was never emperor himself, but he was however so popular with the Roman people that his mere name became the title for the subsequent emperors of Rome, Augustus Octavian being the first. The later German title "Kaiser" and the Russian "Tsar" both derives from the word 'Ceasar'.

White-haired guy was Marcus Aurelius (aw-RAY-lee-us), a Roman emperor; he also played the first Dumbledore; both played by actor Richard Harris. CAESAR became a title, like "president" or "prime minister"; it's not somebody's name. LIVE, LIVE (thumb-up signal). A quick film shot in the fight with the unbeaten, famous fighter showed a face pummel by Maximum and quickly after was the spiked axe to the foot, then the blood coming from the mask -- no, the spike to the foot did not result in the blood out of the mask's mouth.

Roman naming conventions are very different from ours. They often had two or three names, or many more, and they tended to change them throughout their lives and even added new ones on. In studying history, we modern people tend to choose one name for each historical Roman individual to make referring to them easier and to prevent them getting mixed up with all the others who had the same names at different times! THE Caesar you are talking about who we all know we refer to as "Caesar" but every Roman leader after him also had this name at some point, including Marcus Aurelius in this movie who was once called Marcus Aelius Aurelius Verus Caesar. "Caesar" became more like a title. For example, the guy we all know as "Augustus" was born called Gaius Octavius. Later he took the name of his adoptive father and was called Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus - his fourth name was there to differentiate him from THE Gaius Julius Caesar we all know. The reason he changed the fourth name from Octavius to Octavianus is basically to indicate that used to be his name but isn't anymore. Later he took on the name Imperator Caesar Augustus (Augustus meaning "great") which is what we refer to him today as... although people sometimes refer to him before his leadership as Octavian, a different name again, one which he never actually used at the time! Also to add to the confusion, the word Caesar is used incorrectly in pop-culture. For instance, this movie uses it as the leader's title, but they tended to be called Augustus when they became leader, and called Caesar when they were declared heir but before taking over leadership. And more confusion, the modern way to pronounce Caesar is not how the Romans would have pronounced it. It's more likely to have been pronounced similarly to Kaiser. [ disclaimer: I'm only an amateur looking into Roman history a little bit out of curiosity, so if anyone knows better than me, feel free to correct me! ]

The auditorial games were both more and less violent than presented here. In most battles between gladiators, gladiators were not killed. However, the gladitorial matches were generally just the final act of a day of spectacle. The day would start with executions of prisoners through various means including use of wild animals. They would also be fights between trained men and sometimes women against wild animals. Sometimes slaves were also sacrificed. The coliseum in Rome supposedly was filled up with water on one occasion and used for a mock naval battle.

Something you might find interesting Dawn, one of the Emporers of Rome, in I think was 92AD, is why quite essentially the place called Newcastle (since the old castle burnt down) exists, was even called back then Pons Aellius meaning Hadrians Bridge named after a later Emporer of course being Hadrian. Also with names like I said in another thread, well with like an extension I suppose maybe I don't know lol, Donald MacDonald is quite essentially the same thing (ie a son of Calums from Calum and Rory who founded the Scottish celtic rock band Runrig lol, I think he's named after his grandfather lol, meaning quite essentially (when using the old translation kind of as to what it means Donald son of Donald (though really its just family lol).

The Roman Emperor atvthe start of this movie is Marcus Aurelius. He is very famous. His title as Emperor is "Caesar" which as others here have pointed out, was originally a name, as in Julius Caesar, but became the title of all Roman Emperors. The titles of Kaiser, Czar and Shah- for the monarchs of Germany, Russia and Iran, evolved from the name and title Caesar.

Caesar's name was so revered it became synonymous with roman power hence eventually an adopted title passed down to Roman Emperors. Such a profound impact he had on the romans centuries after his death.

They used to use honey for bacterial problems in ancient Egypt, I mean still if you don't bother with the supermarket or store bought honey which will have had its antimicrobial properties destroyed through I think is what they term pasteurisation (so it doesnt go off and can be stored for months, possibly years, its so it absolutely won't go off as usually honey though has a very long shelf life if its not opened but it can do (so they try to stop that from happening). Is a bit of research going into using honey, because of the overuse of antibiotics now as well, which is weakening them.
