Fighters like Varga are few and far between. He’s an absolute gentleman and works to lift others up, but when he’s in there he is ruthless, cold and calculating. He embodies the spirit of martial arts and what it means to be a warrior

Your question mark kick was by far the cleanest technique in the fight. The execution on your kicks and the timing is just something to be envious about; they are always super clean and quick.

Bas Rutten has long been my favorite figure in combat sports. His insight and sense of humor are always awesome. Having GSP on commentary is just amazing.

It's interesting to learn you do some type of disconnect when you go into the fight because you don't like to hurt others. That was one of the reasons I didn't compete much. I just don't have the drive to hurt others unless is a self defense situation or I'm defending others.

Mate, it was a great performance. Dominant and the positive commentary by two legends was well deserved. Been watching your channel for years now and you’ve inspired me to get back into Muay Thai & BJJ after not doing any combat sports for 4 years or so! Used to box for the British Military and point style kickboxing before that when I was a teenager. Been back at it for a year now!

I'm awfully surprised at how educational this was. I also thought I was the only person in the martial arts world who doesn't enjoy hurting people/have quite some issues with it. I really like Gabriel.

Why would you think that you're the only one who doesn't like hurting people and has some issues with doing so? I know quite a few people who train in the martial arts and are the same way. Any of them would still hurt people if it's necessary, he just wouldn't enjoy doing it. Granted, not a popular stance, doesn't seem macho enough and doesn't do much to promote professional fights.

ONE was so slow with negotiations. I was talking with them for 3-4 months. Karate Combat sent the offer within 2 weeks.

The moment a respectful, soft-spoken fighter says, "The compassionate half of me that doesn't want hurt my opponent kind of gets thrown away, and I just think 'you know, I don't care if I hurt this guy'", that's when it's time to be afraid. It's great to see your reactions to the what the commentators are saying and that you learn from listening to them, as well as the obvious and mutual respect that goes on between you. In boxing and kickboxing matches, the disrespect of audiences sometimes really annoys me. Nearly none of them would have the guts to step into a ring, and yet they boo fighters who've been training for years and who are risking their health to fight for their entertainment...even if I don't like a fighter, I'd never boo them. I wouldn't dare to step into a ring, they do, and I respect them for it. That's why I always like seeing fighters and commentators being respectful to each other, because they know what it's like to step into a ring. At the same time, I also like that you're confident enough to say, "Yes, I want the card to revolve around me and be that big main event." I think your approach of earnestly working your way toward it while clearly stating your goal is a fantastic approach, because you truly want to earn it, rather than feeling entitled to it. Even though I'm not exactly a martial artist myself (primarily a fencer with some krav maga), I absolutely consider your attitude towards it inspiring.

Fun video 🙂 And cool to hear what you said about having good (great) technique lines up with my thoughts. Some of the people I train with tease me about how much of a form perfectionist I can be, but my perspective on it is that your form in a fight isn't going to be better than what it is in practice, so might as well practice being as perfect as possible to bring up the performance floor when you're dealing with all the extra variables in live action.

To clarify, the rule for knee on belly or knee on the floor has been in place since the beginning of Karate Combat. Both are legal.

Awesome fight and video! I love your analytical approach to fighting! Question for you about Karate Combat -- do you feel this is a different combat sport than kickboxing, or is it just a different organization and rule set that perhaps has not 'matured' fully yet? I don't mean to downplay their skills or the challenges of fighting a different style, but it's hard for me not to think that if more fighters from kickboxing or MMA like you start to compete, then the style of fighting will start to look more and more like kickboxing, with greater defensive responsibility and distance control, along with groundwork from mma.

They absolutely hit the jackpot in terms of commentator choice. Their rule set makes for interesting fights, their venue is interesting as well, and the pit is quite a differentiating feature. Hope they keep growing and eventually add a female division.
