I was disappointed in the reaction myself. It was more about GTA/CM Punk. I’d analyze the lyrics a little more, there’s a message in the song. I’d suggest checking out some tracks from their second album Times Up. A lot of meaningful lyrics. No matter if you’re right, left or center, you’ll be a better person for it.

Further to that, I recall hearing that Living Colour still wasn’t getting air time in MTV in the hard rock/metal section and we’re being played in the funk or whatever section they put African American bands in back in the day, when they were clearly a rock band, and all because of the colour of their skin!

My only issue with this saying is, what about all the people that say and have said the same things that they said and haven't been killed? It just becomes part of the conspiracy when someone is killed. The truth is, good people AND bad people are killed by lunatics all the time. But there are more good people and bad people who DON'T get killed. Speaking the truth does not get you killed by some secret government organization, being famous and angering some lunatic with a gun gets you killed.

Talented with a message about politics and government. Then you add Vernon killing that guitar. This band has always been light years ahead of their time. Glad you got to experience them. SUCH an underrated band. My mom was obsessed with this band. She saw them every chance she could, to the point that they recognized her and I guarantee they would still remember her to this day. I'm so grateful that my mom introduced me to this band at such a young age. Can you imagine a band like this coming out right now???? They would be the biggest band of all time. They were marginalized as the metal band that was black. But when you look at what they were doing, it was on par politically with Rage Against the Machine, but with a sound that was very different and just as unique. I hope one day they get the props they deserve. There is this slight element of funk to the metal (which I've never seen done, at least properly) and there is a slight bit of R & B to the vocals, almost like Iron Maiden, the way Bruce is so operatic. Point is, they were unique, different, talented beyond words and had the lyrics to back it all up. The funny thing is, I've seen them more on reaction channels recently than I've heard about them in 15 to 20 years. Videos like this one seem to be ramping up the interest in them, and I thank you for that.

The song is just as GOOD and just as powerful when it came out in 1988, I remember it premiering on MTV & was blown away! There is irony and double-speak in the lyrics intentionally. Cult of Personality is a doubled edge sword. First time, "when a Leader Speak, the reflection lies," as it did with Lenin in Russia and Mao in China, but then the next time, "when a Leader Speaks, that leader dies," as happened with JFK & MLK Jr. First time, "you won't have to follow me, only you can set me free" and next time, "you won't have to follow me, only you can set you free" - powerful lyrics. Great song!

Great song/band. I remember when this landed & it was culturally mind blowing, mostly because people couldn't comprehend that some black guys were doing some awesome hard rock lol. Mick Jagger was also a big fan & instrumental in getting their first album Vivid made.

"When a leader speaks, that leader dies" is a very deep statement, but what about the rest of the song? "You gave me power in your gods name" "I'm the smiling face on your TV" "I exploit you, yet you love me" "You wont have to follow me, only you can set me free" The cult of personality is a lie. The subject of one can feed off of it while being worshipped (like the leader of a country keeping the people from revolting). Later these 2 lines turn into "You wont have to follow me, only you can set YOU free" The amount of truth this speaks in the present is nuts.

Given how much he's seemed to love good drum work since the start of the metal reactions, the lack of Danny Carey is disturbing. All we've got so far is Right in Two. We definitely need to go deeper. We just need a good hour and a half video reacting to all of Lateralus... Or just go do Hooker With a Penis. That's a fun one with a solid message.
