1:16 People have wondered for years whether Harpo was singing amongst his brothers here. Note earlier "How do you know there's four of them?" "Because they're singing 'Sweet Adeline'." Which means they heard four voices. (The song was sung regularly by barbershop quartets.) The secret to Chico's piano playing was this. His teacher was all the Marx family could afford for lessons. The idea was that she would teach Chico who would then teach Harpo and so on. But she couldn't teach the left hand, just the right. "The right hand's where the music is," she scolded Chico. So though he did well with the right hand, he faked with the left. Eventually he developed some tricks (shooting the keys, etc.) to disguise that he wasn't great at the left hand. Chico would get a job playing piano in silent movie houses, but Harpo would show up to actually work in them (the two of them looked alike) because Chico was more interested in some card game. The similarity got Harpo in trouble when he ended up playing piano in a whorehouse run by a gangster family. The Chevalier bit was a continuance of their old Joe Frisco bit from vaudeville (see their appearance in the movie "The House That Shadows Built" for what it was like). Chevalier and the Marxes were friends so it was okay to use his name.

My brother was around 6 when he discovered the Marx Brothers, and instantly imprinted on Groucho. He can do the voice, the walk, everything, and quotes him often. (You'd be surprised how often those lines work in everyday life!) I also love The Big Store, which (I think) has even more laughs than the others. I'm so glad you're doing this! You FINALLY got to this one! :D I knew you'd die laughing Dawn :D. The barn fight climax is the best thing ever. The face Harpo makes during the Punch 'n' Judy scene was called the "Googie" (where he crosses his eyes and puffs out his cheeks); it was a signature. And Chico's piano playing is known as 'shooting the keys' as he punctuates each note.
@BaccarWozat
@BaccarWozat 6 ай бұрын
No, it was called the Gookie. Supposedly the name of a cigar store owner who rolled his own, and when he did he made a face like that. There was some recent developments where it was believed the owner's name was actually Amadeo Gucci and that Harpo got the name wrong, but the evidence didn't add up since the man who allegedly conducted the interview with the man who knew him, was a strange science fiction writer fond of practical jokes, who became unstable and later killed himself by setting his apartment on fire. Googie, on the other hand, is the name of Googie Withers, an English actress who was not known to have even smoked cigars.

Interesting reference to the French actor / singer Maurice Chevalier in this movie - I'm watching one of his later movies, Love In The Afternoon, with Audrey Hepburn and Gary Cooper. Cooper was in lots of comedies in the 1930s himself, and might have made more than Cary Grant. I especially like the 1941 Capra film he made with Barbra Stanwyck -- Meet John Doe, , and the even funnier Wilder film he made with her -- Ball Of Fire,.

Indeed, there are few Chevalier clips on YT. Our loss. We have a handful of late '20s and early '30s DVDs, but I forgot that he was important in French cinema (as a child actor) for 1910s into those Hollywood/Paris collaborations of 1930s. Then he of course disappeared as the Nazi's marched into Paris and only emerged in Hollywood films after 1947.

He was on radio shows of the day, into the '30s before war broke out. He was brought back in the time-frame you mention, almost 20 years later. I don't know what happened to him from 1937 to 1947. And no matter what, he was well-known enough for Groucho to make a reference to him. They were probably vaudeville-Broadway friends. In some films, both Groucho and WC Fields would make references to Zasu Pitts ("you don't want wind up like Zasu Pitts" and "You look like Zasu Pitts"), as well as others that we'd learn were tip o' the hats to their vaudeville pals.

They are a lot of fun on rewatching. I think the shotgun-humor films (AIRPLANE, NAKED GUN, etc) that splatter jokes all over are deriviatives from Marx films where the writers consciously created background jokes constantly. In reality, though, the Silent comedies have all of these elements, too - not so busy or fast-paced but I think that's because they didn't have film-editing processes in place, so splices were problematic.

I've been waiting for this day Dawn! This movie is too often ignored, you and I know the Marx Brothers were the best, totally insane. the blond actress in this is Thelma Todd [July 29, 1906 to December 16, 1935] who was also in Horse Feathers. She was in about 120 feature films and shorts between 1926 and 1935, [Silent and Sound movies]. She is remembered for her comedic roles. On the morning of Monday, December 16, 1935, Todd was found dead, wearing a mauve and silver gown, mink wrap and expensive jewelry, in her chocolate-colored 1934 Lincoln Phaeton convertible inside the garage. The garage was not hers. Her death was ruled accidental but they never really determined if it was suicide or murder. There was a mobster she was married to involved in her restaurant bar she co-owned. He was very abusive to her and she divorced him, changed her will to leave only $1 to him. Another mobster wanted turn the restaurant in to a gambling joint, she did not. You can see the corruption and confusion going on in this story. Corrupt cops covering up a murder...its a Hollywood mystery no one ever solved.

My favorite comedy of all time is "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," from 1963, directed by Stanley Kramer, with an all star cast, many of whom you'll recognize. It's a bit long, the original at 3:30, but most digital versions are shorter than that, now (which means you're missing some funny stuff). The director's cut was over hours, but the studio made him cut it back. Stanley Kramer made some great serious movies, and this was his attempt at comedy, and he went over the top.

I love Your channel and your choice of movies. I´m a Marx Brothers-Fan myself since my childhood and I didn't watch them for a long time. Now through You I rediscovered them again and it´s wonderful to see that the younger generation is also interested in them. The only bad thing is that they made only 13 movies together. But there are still other comedians and comedy-movies of the 30s and 40s to be (re-)discovered. Have You ever watched also Hellzapoppin(1941) its one of the craziest Comedy- Musicals of the 40s has a lot famous actors, comedians(even Shemp Howard of the three Stooges) and every minute there is a crazy gag, Don't miss it.

A muckraker is a journalist who focuses on negative stories. It was coined by Theodore Roosevelt.
@Alanpie314
@Alanpie314 6 ай бұрын
Actually, Roosevelt was quoting from a once famous book, Pilgrim's Progress, an allegorical novel about the journey of a Christian to salvation. In the book, the "Muck Raker" was a man who only looked at the wickedness of the world, always "raking the muck", instead of focusing on the joys to come in Heaven.

Dawn, glad to hear you're reading The Groucho Letters. If you want more info on the brothers you should read Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Sometimes Zeppo by Joe Adamson. Another fascinating book is The Marx Brothers Scrapbook , which features some extremely frank interviews with Groucho. I recommend them both, I know you'll love them as much as you love their movies.

The Ealing Comedies will have some whimsy of FAWLTY TOWERS, but also those Will Hay comedies are pretty great, too. She may need those lesson in Brit Comedy, but FUNNY BONES (1995) is a terrific comedy-murder mystery AND a history in British vaudeville.

Sweet Adeline is a song sung by Barbershop Quartets (4) even though there are 4 Marx Brothers (Harpo doesn't speak or sing so he should only hear 3 voices, but assumed 4 because of the song.)

@TE.LE--GRA.M-_..-_.DawnMarieX "Package 4you". At last after all these years welcome comrade welcome sit down rest your weary elbows you'll take a glass of vodka?. Mr Dalliard!. Mr Dalliard!. We've been activated. Break out the rabbit skin hats we are going to Moscow!. What news Comrade Stalin in rude health I trust?. "All I said was Package 4you". Precisely the code; it is now 27 summers since comrade Malinsky stood slightly to the left of where you are now and told me that one day a man would come into the shop and give notice of his allegiance with the phrase "Package 4you". Hearing those words Mr Dalliard and I were to detonate our relatives and fly to Dover where a man named Smith would see us safely onto a goods train delivering livestock to Minsk . :)

Harpo taught himself the harp, played the "wrong way" but when he later in life took Harp Lessons, the teachers were in awe of what he could do and wanted to learn HIS method. so he gave up taking lessons. what is amazing is he could play all kinds of different styles, turn a classical piece into a swinging jazz piece. his real name when he was born was Adolph Marx but when Adolph Hitler showed up he changed officially to Arthur Marx. Why? Because The Marx Brothers were Jewish. He could really talk, but rarely spoke in public to keep up the myth he was a mute...Read his autobiography "Harpo Speaks"

Going back another decade for some really funny physical comedy from the silent era, you might want to try Harold Lloyd's Safety Last and Buston Keaton's The General. The lead actor in each did most if not all of his death dying stunts. Both movies being so old, they have long been in the public domain, so you can find the complete copies on KZfaq, copyright free. Another one of my favorites is the 1930's Heidi with fabulous child star Shirley Temple.

This one comes before they had finalized their schtick. It is great on the ship, but, as you noted, is not as good towards the end. They hit their prime with their next movie, which has Margaret Dumont, and stay in their prime for their next four, and then slack a little after that. There is no equivalent to the Marx Brothers, but if you are looking for something a step away, you should try Danny Kaye. Like the Marx Brothers, in his own movies he basically plays the same character from movie to movie, with a mix of comedy singing and dancing. (He was a good enough dancer to do a dance movie with Bing Crosby, but that isn't what I am recommending). Instead you have The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Inspector General, The Court Jester, The Kid from Brooklyn, and Hans Christian Anderson. (The last is not as funny as the others, but is incredibly sweet and still shows off his talents). Two other comedies you should have on your list are the cult classic Harold and Maude, and After Hours. I'm not sure that describing either one would make you want to watch them more, but I think you would like both of them.

of the 5 movies with the "4" marx bros this is my least favorite. i don't like the silly fight scene at the end. ("the cocoanuts" and "duck soup" remain my favorites.) but i guess they thought they needed to give zeppo something to do. this was the first marx bros movie not based upon one of their broadway plays and it suffers a liitle at the end as a result. the "maurice chevalier" gag was orginally done in their first broadway play "I'll say she is." which was never turned into a movie but its opening segment was filmed and appeared in the 1931 variety film " The House That Shadows Built." don't worry. when you run out of marx bros films you'll have 10 years of groucho's 50's tv show "you bet your life" to watch. thanks for the video. your silly laugh is contageous. i think i need a doctor!
