National Lampoon was a popular humor magazine in the US, known for its savage and adult flavor humor compared to the more juvenile MAD magazine, peaking probably in the late 1970's and early 80's. They branded several great comedies early on, the first being the National Lampoon's Animal House. Killing the dog is on brand for the magazine. One of their most famous covers featured a photo of a worried looking dog with a gun held to its head, and a promise to spare the dog if you buy the magazine. The magazine eventually collapsed and the name was bought by someone who licensed the brand out to a lot of awful, terrible, worthless comedies, so the brand name by itself is no longer a guarantee. The Chevy Chase vacation movies are great, particularly this one and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Wally World is 100% taking the piss out of Disney. The owner even looks like Uncle Walt. Oh, and one more note. As Wally World isn't real, they filmed the rides at a couple of Six Flags parks in California. They're a popular chain of theme parks, a bit more accessible than the Disney parks.

I could be wrong, but I believe the scenes shot at Six Flags were shot at the original Six Flags Over Texas, in Arlington, TX. I am not even sure if thry had started opening other parks yet at that point. Then Time Warner bought the chain and ruined the franchise. Chevy Chase’s physical humor and goofball incompetence is on point. Did you notice when he and Ellen are talking in the kitchen she is scraping the dishes off in the trash and he is wiping them off and putting them in the cupboard instead of the dishwasher? Stuff like that.
@NateAZ

When I saw this in the theater with my sisters, it got to that scene and my oldest sister blurted out, "Gross, he's just putting the dirty dishes back in the cupboard!" and half the women in the audience gasped and many men just started cracking up. It was a great mix of reactions for that. Then later, when Aunt Edna, after finding out the dog peed on their sandwiches, just shrugged and kept on eating hers....nearly everyone let out a " oooohhhh!". I just love those parts, displaying the less filtered humor of the 80s.

You add the ground beef (and maybe some veggies) along with some milk/butter/water, and it 'Helps' you put together a quick, filling meal (at least in theory). So, basically the Hamburger patties are made with ground up pasta & sauce mix (which is much cheaper than hamburger, but as Clark said, contains no meat)

Hi Dawn! You asked if the Wally World location was a real park and it is. Those scenes were filmed at Magic Mountain which is located just northwest of Los Angeles. At one time that was the largest wooden rollercoaster ever built. I love your content. Huge fan! (Ham, pastrami, and mayo with any soft bread.)

He is also a comedian and was the anchor of "The National Lampoon Radio Hour", a comedy program from 1973 to 1975. Other notable cast from the show included Richard Belzer, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, and Harold Ramis.

Elvis Presley’s Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich Preheat a grill pan or griddle over medium heat. Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Spread peanut butter on other side of each slice of bread. Place banana slices on top of peanut butter. Top with bacon slices and drizzle with honey. Top with the remaining slice of bread, buttered side up. Place sandwich on grill pan. Cook until golden brown and crispy, about 3 minutes per side. Remove to cutting board, slice in half, and serve immediately.

Funny you ask about sandwiches, because I'm watching the video while at a chain restaurant called Jason's Deli, eating their ham-and-salami mufaleta sammich. It comes with melted provolone cheese and... I forget what they call the spread, but it's made of finely diced black olives and a bit of carrot. It's served on a crusty sesame seed roll. I'm a sandwich guy myself, and this one's making an impressive run at becoming my favorite.

A bit of movie trivia … The original ending had the Griswald’s kidnapping Roy Wally from his home (a similar scene they used in Christmas Vacation), but that ending didn’t do well with test audiences , so they reshot the ending at the amusement park (several months after the original ending was shot)… during the break between the filming of the two endings, the actor who played Rusty had a growth spurt (he grew much taller)… during the entire movie he’s shorter than his mom, Ellen… but in the ending scene at the amusement park, he’s taller than Ellen.

In 1983 I was visiting college friends in LA, they lived in Carson and worked, so I took the RTD (buses) to DisneyLand on my last day before heading back to my small hometown in Minnesota. The bus ride was an adventure, with a change of busses in Watts... finally got there and asked the driver where the entrance was, he pointed to it and said, but DisneyLand is closed today! They closed one day that year to do maintenance, preparing for the 1984 Olympics. I never got to visit DisneyLand, and went home the next day.

National Lampoon was a magazine that featured Douglas Kenney, Henry Beard and Robert Hoffman. Kenney was the primary creator, and a Harvard alumini, so it was named after the Havard Lamppon. (To lampoon something was to make fun of it). Kenney was a comedic genius, and they eventually started a Radio show with what became the original Saturday Night Live cast of "Not Ready For Prime Time Players" including Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Dan Ackroyd, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin, Larriane Newman, and eventually Bill Murray. They became so popular, they branched out into movies, with Animal House starring Belushi. This was Chase's first. Imogene Coca, who played Aunt Edna, was (as Tom Stanziola stated) was a regular on "Your Show Of Shows" with Sid Caesar. The writing staff included Mel Brooks, Buck Henry, Carl Reiner, Neil Simon and Woody Allen amongst others. The little "french-kissing" cousin was played by Jane Krakowski who later appeared in Ally McBeal & 30 Rock, as is quite the singer dancer. The blonde in the car is Christy Brinkley, a top model at the time, and eventual wife of Billy Joel. (She was the "Uptown Girl" that he wrote the song about). The later "Vacation" films have other actors playing the children, but they're very funny too. Wally World was filmed at Six Flags in Valencia, California. My High School Grad Night was held there in 1971 before it was even open to the public, parts were still under construction. Okay, sandwiches ... there are many, but I do love a good tuna sandwich with mayo, lettuce, celery & sweet pickles on 12 grain bread with a bowl of tomato soup. It goes back to my mother making it for me when I was a kid. Yeah, I know it sounds terrible, but I love it!

Got all the way through to the end because I wasn’t tied to the bumper. Plain white bread is what I grew up with, but I have settled on King’s Hawaiian sweet rolls. Peanut butter and jelly is what I take to work (have a bunch in the freezer) and otherwise turkey with mustard and mayo or chicken salad or ham with ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise, and all of them with cheese of course! Do burgers and hotdogs count too? Great thing about sandwiches is the variety. This film is a gem, showcasing Chevy Chase’s talent for goofiness. A dumb clutz stumbling through life. There are worthy sequels, the funniest aspect being different actors for the kids. And cousin Eddie returns too.

Great reaction video. This movie always cracks me up. Sandwiches.. Sometimes I still like Peanut butter and grape jelly. BUt I usually rolls with this.. One slice of bread down, mayonnaise then two or 3 pieces of Ham or Salami, then a slice of cheese, American or Gouda, or Swiss, then 1 more slice fo bread, some more mayonnaise, or mustard, depending two to 4 slices of turkey or chicken, another slice of cheese, lettuce, tomato and sometimes a pickle, but usually on the side. These are often referred to as a "Dagwood" for the cartoon Blondie.

Favorite sandwich? It's a tough call, but I think I have to go with a homemade turkey sandwich: start with homemade wheat bread, add a bit of mayo, and then pile on leftover turkey (especially the dark meat!) from a big holiday dinner. It does take a lot of setting up, though, since somebody has to make a big holiday dinner _and also_ bake a batch of fresh bread. So I generally only get to make this kind of sandwich once or twice a year.
