Looking at videos of MM, there is a significant difference in energy between MM talking about herself and MM attempting to show interest in someone else. The latter is very rushed and her normally animated voice and gesticulations become flat and almost monotone. She's also not the most dynamic at unscripted small talk.

Africa is a huge continent and there are many different countries, cultures and cities that rival any American one. Every country has poverty. I hate that this is the only narrative that seems to be portrayed in western culture about Africa!

In the video everyone (except Megan) is talking about the toilets and how it was a great improvement for them, and I don’t doubt them, 40 kids sharing a toilet!. Megan instead tries to keep it as general as possible referring to it as “little things with big impacts” to make it sound as if she is making more, that the girl will become a scientist thanks to Megan. To me it looks like she underestimate the issue with the toilets, she has no clue the impact it had in their daily life, is a basic need, so she had to make it about something else like that girl liking science 😑

I read a book, nothing intellectual or anything, but in the book, there was a charity event for foster children and group homes. The main character asked, why not just donate all the money spent on such an extraordinary event instead of hosting a party for influential people? And it’s so true! Especially in this situation. Her backers financed the trip through a 'charity organisation' that organised trips for minor celebrities to parade around like they were real activists,mainly to raise their humanitarian profile
