We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages: Korean, English, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading French and Greek! She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Arirang Alone is a modem take on an old folk song and is about the longing Koreans have for the North and South to be one. Sohyang has said in an interview that this 2014 performance before Michael Bolton was the most pleasing to her personally up to that point in her career because Michael Bolton is one of her absolutely favourite singers, and because he was so effusive in his praise for her she was satisfied that she and her team could produce similarly world class songs and performances. And hey, Michael Bolton told her she was a vocal "virtuoso" after the concert and invited her to join him for the rest of his South Korean tour. How do you beat that? Well, Michael Bolton can offer to take you on an entirely new world tour making you the featured guest--and that is _exactly_ what he did! Unfortunately, or not, the two could not make their schedules match no matter how hard they tried and the tour never materialized. This was actually fairly depressing for Sohyang because she really wanted to go BIG TIME in the music business at that exact moment but everything seemed to conspire against her. Pneumonia problems would crop up and this has been a chronic problem for Sohyang. She would later recognize this as God's way of preventing her from getting caught up in the North American and European music industry that would have been destructive to her character at that time. Sohyang is humble enough and courageous enough to confess she had become so ambitious that she was an ugly person, short tempered with other people and not treating them with proper respect. I know, my jaw hit the floor when I read the interview too! Sohyang a _mean person?_ Say it ain't so! But we all have times where we are embarrassed at how we behaved and Sohyang is just a human being, like the rest of us. Two years later in 2016 Sohyang was almost ready to quit the entire music business because her health problems were so bad. Yet she had given her truly immortal performances of "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Arirang Alone," "Everyone" and "I Have Nothing" only the previous year in 2015, and "The Prayer" and "Power Of Love" in 2014--songs _any_ diva who has ever walked the earth would _kill_ to have in their repertoire! So she plundered her bank account and took a trip to New York, Boston and Philadelphia. In the latter city Sohyang saw a quote from President Franklin Roosevelt where he had said in his inaugural address during the Great Depression of the 1930s that "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." This proved so inspirational for her that when she got back to South Korea she entered the "King of the Masked Singers" contest in 2017 and won it on six consecutive occasions! Still the pneumonia dogged her so badly she knew it was God's way of telling her she had to reassess why she had become a singer in the first place. And that was to sing to lift people's spirits who were going through hard times. In 2018 David Foster himself did eight concerts with her at Tokyo's Blue Note Club and it is thought he offered to be the producer for new recordings of her. But she had been really reconsidering her purpose in life and decided the Hollywood lifestyle was the last thing she truly wanted, and in 2020 she turned down a contract offer from Sony Music US, _the 2nd largest music corporation in the world!_ And there were many others before that going back a decade or so! Since then Sohyang has been resolute in her decision to stay away from the music "industry" and manage her own career for the purposes she had started it all with. Arirang has no direct translation to English but the idea it represents is along the lines of very hard work or diligent struggle. The song is based on a Korean folk song that has evolved over a period of 600 years and now is an allegory for their desire to reunite north and south. Sohyang is difficult to rationally explain. She might have died from cervical cancer when she was 20 but credits God with her healing. Yet a bad blood transfusion at the time of the surgery left her with hepatitis B. Normally that is easily cured with antibiotics but this was the rare incurable variety so it plagues her to this day with a compromised immune system and she contracts pneumonia rather often. For a four year period from 2016 to 2020 she was battling it eight different times and was almost out of circulation in the musical community. Thus Sohyang knows what it is to be chronically ill for a lengthy period of time but again credits God with teaching her invaluable spiritual lessons from it. She has largely been fine since then but did come down with covid19 for two weeks in the summer of 2022. Thankfully she recovered well and at the age of 45 sings as excellently today as she ever has. You are right when the thought comes to mind that there is no way this woman is 45! She looks 10 or 15 years younger, at least! But it is true. She was born on April 5, 1978! 🤷‍♂ Professional "super star" level music producers (David Foster), singers (Michael Bolton and Josh Groban), teachers (Seth Riggs) and vocal coaches by the boat load are pretty well stupefied at how much talent is wrapped up in this tiny five foot four inch, 100 pound woman. Sohyang has trained her central nervous system to the point, and developed such articulate muscular control, that her singing technique is perfect. She is considered a master singer. Literally. Again Sohyang gives the credit to the divine entity, stating her voice "is from God." Obviously she has taken her singing talent to the nth degree, and tells others who want to enter the world of professional singing that they must be born with a good voice and then work very hard to develop it. But this barely scratches the surface of who Sohyang is and how talented she is on stage. Her stage presence and body language are unmatched in my experience, much like what Elvis Presley had fifty years ago but different, of course, since she is a sincere Christian woman and believes in presenting herself in modest yet excellent quality theatrical attire and with absolute confidence and purpose at all times. I have also found these high production value South Korean music presentations to be as good as you will find anywhere on the planet. They show Sohyang in the best fashion possible and these seem, to me, as good as you would find at _any_ of the Grammy Awards in their heyday. When you add a Super Star talent like Sohyang to the show, everyone who watches it is quite rightly blown away. 👀😮💥👌😎🎸🎙👽🛸💖💖💖
