@FrankHeuvelman Over fourteen years have passed since that unhappy day when the German people, blinded by promises made by those at home and abroad, forgot the highest values of our past, of the Reich, of its honor and its freedom, and thereby lost everything. Since those days of treason, the Almighty has withdrawn his blessing from our nation. Discord and hatred have moved in. Filled with the deepest distress, millions of the best German men and women from all walks of life see the unity of the nation disintegrating in a welter of egotistical political opinions, economic interests, and ideological conflicts. As so often in our history, Germany, since the day the revolution broke out, presents a picture of heartbreaking disunity. We did not receive the equality and fraternity which was promised us; instead we lost our freedom. The breakdown of the unity of mind and will of our nation at home was followed by the collapse of its political position abroad. We have a burning conviction that the German people in 1914 went into the great battle without any thought of personal guilt [for the start of the war] and weighed down only by the burden of having to defend the Reich from attack, to defend the freedom and material existence of the German people. In the appalling fate that has dogged us since November 1918 we see only the consequence of our inward collapse. But the rest of the world is no less shaken by great crises. The historical balance of power, which at one time contributed not a little to the understanding of the necessity for solidarity among the nations, with all the economic advantages resulting therefrom, has been destroyed. The delusion that some are the conquerors and others the conquered destroys the trust between nations and thereby also destroys the world economy. But the misery of our people is terrible! The starving industrial proletariat [working class] have become unemployed in their millions, while the whole middle and artisan class have been made paupers. If the German farmer also is involved in this collapse we shall be faced with a catastrophe of vast proportions. For in that case, there will collapse not only a Reich, but also a 2000-year-old inheritance of the highest works of human culture and civilization. All around us are symptoms portending this breakdown. With an unparalleled effort of will and of brute force the Communist method of madness is trying as a last resort to poison and undermine an inwardly shaken and uprooted nation. They seek to drive it towards an epoch which would correspond even less to the promises of the Communist speakers of today than did the epoch now drawing to a close to the promises of the same emissaries in November 1918. Starting with the family, and including all notions of honor and loyalty, nation and fatherland, culture and economy, even the eternal foundations of our morals and our faith-nothing is spared by this negative, totally destructive ideology. . . . One year of Bolshevism would destroy Germany. The richest and most beautiful areas of world civilization would be transformed into chaos and a heap of ruins. Even the misery of the past decade and a half could not be compared with the affliction of a Europe in whose heart the red flag of destruction had been planted. The thousands of injured, the countless dead which this battle has already cost Germany may stand as a presage of the disaster. In these hours of overwhelming concern for the existence and the future of the German nation, the venerable World War leader [President Paul von Hindenburg] appealed to us men of the nationalist parties and associations to fight under him again as once we did at the front, but now loyally united for the salvation of the Reich at home. The revered President of the Reich having with such generosity joined hands with us in a common pledge, we nationalist leaders would vow before God, our conscience and our people that we shall doggedly and with determination fulfill the mission entrusted to us as the National Government. It is an appalling inheritance which we are taking over.

I once went to the Alps but I didn't like it. There were very high mountains everywhere so you could hardly see anything. They were beautiful on the top but on my walk I broke my most beautiful sandals and sprained an ankle. Nobody had told me the weather changes could be very abrupt so I got soaked to the skin in my lovely summer dress. I could hardly speak to anybody because there was nobody to speak to, and when I met some people, they spoke a weird language that I wasn't able to understand. So people were very unhospitable. Finally I got lost on my stroll and had to be taken down in a helicopter after a very long wait which was very unfriendly and also extremely expensive. I definetely won't return and can't recommend the place.

To be fair it's only within the Grachtengordel (canal belt) that it's expensive, although rents over all of Amsterdam are getting higher, but nowhere near as bad as London. As soon as you get out of the canal belt you will find places where you can buy a Kapsalon or entire pizza for 5 Euros or less (used to be less anyway but I left in 2018), and cheap supermarkets like Jumbo, Dirk etc. For some reason Albert Heijn seem to have a monopoly in the centre but even AH isn't exhorbitant, unless you go to a ''AH to go''. But many foreigners are stupid enough to think that a tourist shop with the word ''Supermarket'' in ENGLISH over the door, is a regular Dutch supermarket.

My experience of Dutch people speaking English has generally been excellent though the Dutch accent is unique weirdly now I live in Germany and hearing Dutch people speaking German I hear the same accent in their often flawless German. The video maker told us a lot about herself not so much about the Netherlands She seemed to expect the Dutch to conform to her culture hence McDonald's and Burger King reference. My first visit to the Netherlands was as a teenager with my family and camping and doing the regular sites The funniest event was we went to a restaurant and they ignored us - it was weird and I got sent across to talk to the staff (even though I spoke no Dutch - I was the "linguist" in the family doing French and German in school) and they apologised and said they thought we were German. I know a lot has changed but that was in the mid-seventies and they were came over and lavished service on us after they found out we were British! I have to say that knowing a little bit of the language also helps I remember being in a lift in China and saying in Chinese "wu lou" - which means fifth floor in Chinese and then for the rest of the time trip in the elevator being told how good my Chinese was! Mind you I did speak Chinese but in this case I said two words only and it helped.

Something it's kind of missing here. This lady hasn't mentioned any other country to compare to, though she said that Americans can not get a job in there(?). Regarding snow I have to step up and say something about it. I live in Toronto where snow falls, but not much, we are lucky that way. She should visit Montreal where the snowfalls are measured in meters, every single winter. Oh, and try to negotiate your way in a city where people pretend that they don't speak english just to piss off the rest of the country. Besides the point that I truly believe she has been paid to say these monstrosities about one of the most recognized countries in the world as model of civility, she does have some sort of misconception about traveling. Tourist don't get free health care ANYWHERE in the world, that's why normal people buy insurance while traveling, unless their own countries provide it when they go abroad. She mentioned that people are not friendly and she had to resort to a voice off in english for her video, which obviously, reflects the fact that she only speaks her own language, which happens to be my own as well., and probably not many locals speak it. This video was entertaining, if ignorance were funny. Once again: I believe that somebody paid her to say what she said. Nice find guys, keep them coming. Greetings from Toronto.

I hate the constant fall back of "capitalist country" for excuses of inequality/wages. At least capitalist countries give you the option of upward mobility where socialized systems restrict you to live the life that's established as the norm.
@publicminx
@publicminx 11 ай бұрын
a capitalist system/country does not exist anyway. thats just a left wing/socialist narrative and projection which still goes back to karl marx book 'das kapital'. and left wings/socialist are just a rebranded christian movement from the era of the enlightenment/industrial revolution. the ones who never got liberal and on one hand stopped believing in god/religion, on the other hand continued with the anti credit bla bla from all of the monotheist religions. left wings are per se just half enlighten. there is a mechanism behind the credit but that makes no country or system as a whole 'capitalist'. its just for anticapitalist an 'enemy' projection. btw, also 'right wing' does not exist (was back then the seat order in the old french assemjbly (which was inspired by the house of common) after the french revolution. since then it was - again - just used as a black-white 'enemy' projection from the ones who call them self 'left wing'. stupid other ppl just picked that up and got used to. but its no real science to believe this nonsense. and yes, of course especially 'capitalist' countries have much more and better systems to care about ppl, create more wealthy for everyone (all anti capitalist countries failed), more innovative and so on. and thats already since the middle age when the first rather citizen driven cities popped up, in belgium, netherlands, italy, partly germany and so on. and yep, comparing all systems/countries on the planet, its always better there where it is 'more capitalist' and always worse (and/or backward/undeveloped) there where it is not. if the media were not mostly left wing in the west (what everyone could know after a short googleing the preferences of most media/journalists, they are usually left-green so are the typical 'pseudo intelletual bubbles' (culture, political science, sociology etc.) then everyone could know that and how stupid anti capitalist stereotypes are in the first place.

For example, socializing is difficult if you don't go to university, sports clubs etc. It has been widely reported and I have heard various stories for it to be true. If you are extremely outgoing you may not have this problem but otherwise some may encounter some difficulties socializing if you don't meet people at work to socialize with or if they don't go to sports clubs etc.

I moved here in 2000. Total opposite feel for Netherlands than her. This is a high maintenance person who is not very bright or able to plan ahead, learn about the country. I stayed in a pension..boarding house. was cheap and never saw the other ppl. As an american got a job in 3 days first employment place with good pay and the benefits are fantastic.. I could not believe it. Pay more taxes but the benefits are worth it. Like retirement. Amsterdam is tourist town and most the drunks are american..All big international cities have ppl selling drugs on dark corners. Most dutch speak English and have an accent. duh. I love it here. never go back and have never had expat friends.

We do have too much snow, she is right about that. We hope to have that fixed in 2024. The canals, quaint little shops and bicycle everywhere, we know it is a bloody nuisance. But removing and replacing them with big shopping malls would be too expensive and we would not be able to afford to live in our expensive hotels anymore.

It was funny to watch the old lady. The only thing I completely agree with her is her remark about drugs. For the rest I was smiling, although I understand she was sharing HER experiences. I am sorry she thinks we are the worst country in Europe. We are kind and friendly and most us speak very good English. I myself studied English for 15 years. We are very open and often share our thoughts. On the other hand we tend to keep things calm and keep out of each others hair. :-)

One thing not mentioned is how hard it is to learn speaking Dutch, because of the road of least resistance. We do speak allot of foreign languages, we are the best non native English speaking countries in the world. I.g. we Dutch are pragmatic, thus we tend to speak in the easiest common shared languages possible, not to show of like some think. Many expats and intl.students 'complained' they cant practice speaking Dutch often enough because we tend ending up speaking English, sorry we mean well LOL How do you two think about that? Btw there is a part 2 'NL sucks' video, thats even more cringe then this 1st part😂
@notapodcast_notacouple

OMG! Part 2 was uploaded a couple of weeks ago. She's just milking it at this point. She hasn't even been here since the first video 😂 About the language: Ana is fluent in Dutch. Jan can read Dutch newspapers on a good day but doesn't speak the language. I think it really depends on the circumstances. The older you get, there are fewer opportunities to practice. If you don't use Dutch at work, that already sets you back as your social life as an international will probably be in English.

@@notapodcast_notacoupleTry Drs.P Compilé Complé (sur CD). 188 Dutch songs by Heinz Polzer in an 8 CD box. Drs. P was regarded to be the last of the Rederijkers, and his lyrics are humerous so they shouldn't be too boring. Then the next time you have a native Dutch speaker over, say: "I was listening to this the other day, and I didn't quite get it." At the very least it will make a great conversation piece.

I find the arguments the lady uses to be quite weird? First of all, do your research! The internet is free. She could have easily googled the hotel prices beforehand. Amsterdam is famous for its cannals and the legalisation of certain substances. Don't act surprised about things that are basically the things that make Amsterdam Amstedam. Secondly, the city was founded in 1275 and was not originally designed to support lots of trafic and shopping malls. Besides, there are both of these things, just maybe not on the scale she is used to in the country that the lady originally came from. The Netherlands is a relatively small country and Amsterdam is ofcoure not that big. There live just over a million people there! Lastly, think it is weird to bash a whole country based on your experience in only one city. If you want the full Netherlands experience please visit other cities! Not only the Randstad, wich is the most busy and hectic part of the Netherlands, but also cities that are a little bit remote (the country is really small, so remote means basically a one to two hour drive ( yes the dutch do have cars and highways)). Anyways, that's all.
