I think is really sad, how desperate she must have been to sand her face, and endure so much pain just hoping to get rid of her acne. It breaks my heart to think how she felt about herself to go to that extreme.

This! :•{ I can relate because I did similar (never sandpaper, but harsh physical exfoliants and isopropyl alcohol, baking soda, etc) and it was a form of self harm. I knew it wouldn’t make my acne better and that it would hurt me, but I felt so disgusted by the sight of my face that even bleeding wounds and scars seemed like an improvement over the pimples. I was hopeless and frustrated. And truthfully, I felt like I deserved the pain for failing to look beautiful. Society’s message to women seemed to be, “your only worth is being pretty, once your youth and beauty are gone you’re disposable,” so that internalized misogyny created a horrible inner turmoil. That’s why I’m so grateful for people like Hyram who educate the public on skincare AND self care. Everyone deserves to feel beautiful and achieve clear skin, it really can be life changing. (For that reason I’m super passionate about affordable skincare too, because it’s ridiculous to look at it as a luxury instead of a basic need and a part of personal hygiene!!) But everyone also deserves to know that their worth is so much deeper and so far beyond their physical appearance. If anyone reading this has felt this way or feels this way, I see you, I empathize with you, I support you, I love you, and I wish you the best. ❤️

My problem with skin picking, is it doesnt matter if I'm looking in the mirror or not. I will sit on my bed and feel my face and scratch whatever off, or my shoulders or arms. I've tried so hard to stop and I just cant. My time picking has reduced, but once I start I cant stop until someone stops me.

If you struggle with dermatilomania or skin picking PLEASE try getting acrylic/gel nails with nail extensions or press on nails!! Having thicker tipped nails makes it pretty much impossible to pick your skin. I used to pick my skin constantly, in the mirror, while was studying, unconiously, and even in my sleep. I used to pick the dry skin off the bottom of my feet until I couldn't walk. Now when I'm stressed I paint myself a fresh set of nails and it has helped immensely!!

THIS!!! This really works, I’m 40 and I’ve had dermatilomania since I was about 7. I could have written the above comment myself as I’ve also had periods where I could barely walk. Thick gel nails and great skincare (less to pick) has saved my life.

I know it probably sounds pretty ridiculous and borderline sad, but ever since I started doing my bathroom routine in the dark I almost completely stopped picking my skin. I'm someone who picks my skin quite a lot. But not because I see blemishes, but because I feel them. I'm used to touching my face or my arms or neck, and if I come across any part that feels odd or a 'blemish' I will keep picking it until it's no longer "rough". Probably not a good habit.

Tip for my fellow skin pickers: do your skincare almost completely in the dark. The light needs to be dim enough that you can't really see the details of your face in the mirror, but you can at least see the products you're using/what you're doing. Hyram's tip of not looking at yourself in the mirror is very helpful, but if you need to take it an extra step further try dimming the light and see how it goes.

I've been waiting for you to say something about Dermatillomania for so long, and I wondered if you even knew about it because it's not too common. Hearing you finally touch on the topic made me feel seen. I hear so many skincare KZfaqrs go on and on about how bad it is to pick at your skin, but no one ever mentions that it may be due to a mental illness, and it makes me feel so guilty and ashamed. Thank you for saying something about it and shedding some light on the topic. Love you Hyram

I had really bad acne in high school and my parents were convinced that lemon would help, so I rubbed a lemon on my skin EVERYDAY for more than a year, sometimes even two times a day, i put it around my EYE AREA and i never even put on moisturiser bc I didn’t like the way it felt😭 I burned my entire face🙃 I did the same with apple cider vinegar. And since I was destroying my face everyday and it looked awful I refused to go to school without makeup.. I didn’t buy makeup removers bc I thought it was gonna break me out even more lmaooo so instead I scrubbed my face with sugar to get it off EVERY DAY. yes I do somehow still have skin left a few years later my dad (who knows nothing about skincare) told me that if I put a mixture of lemon, cinnamon, nutmeg and honey on my face it would make my scars fade, and guess what? It didn’t :))) but you can imagine how much worse my skin got and how DRY I was

So when I was 11 or 12, I mixed cinnamon, lemon, and sugar and used it to scrub my face everyday in hopes of clearing my skin up before 6th grade started. I used dishwashing soap to wash my face, then I used my mom's cream which was EXPIRED but I didn't care. I kept going and used my nails to scratch the pimples off, thinking that if the scabs were gone then it will go away. I used coconut oil mixed with carrot (which molded often but I didn't care either), and I still used it to "protect my skin". And I would boil mushrooms and straight up put it on my face. My skin broke out HORRIBLY on the day I woke up before the first day of 6th grade, and I had a panic attack. It ruined my self esteem and skin for YEARS. I also got bullied constantly because of it. But my skin is doing much better now, and my routine is a lot better too.

I don't have a diagnosis but I think I might have dermatillomania too. I will pick at any blemish on my skin until I bleed and the entire area is red, and then they will scab and I will do it again. I also have the same issue with my nails, I bite them until my entire finger tip is red and my cuticles are bleeding. I feel no pain as a do these things and I almost feel relaxed as I do it but as soon as I "allow" myself to be done I feel so much pain and anxiety and I can't even touch or hold anything or wash my face without wanting to cry from the pain or feel the need to pick again.

Yep, when I was young and started going through puberty family members told me to use rubbing alcohol to clean my oily skin, Not knowing any better and feeling self conscious I started cleaning my face daily multiple times a day, my face started reacting and become increasingly oily so it became a horrible cycle, I didn’t wear sunscreen or moisturizer., I’m still dealing with the scars and skin damage, I’m seeing changes and am doing research to find ways to help heal. Thank you for making videos so other people don’t make these same mistakes.

I honestly love watching you because I come from a family with very sensitive skin and I appreciate you so now I know what products to watch out for! :D

The worst thing I did to my skin was not listen to dermatologists when they told me I had to wear sunscreen when I was on Accutane. I think my acne scars would be MUCH better if I did lol
