I always feel very bad for giving a memoir a poor rating/review, but I have read some that are horribly written. And some that should definitely have stayed their private journal and not been released into the world because they are so cringy. Memoirs need to be relevant to someone other than the writer.

I see both sides. My star rating scale for memoirs is 3-5 stars. They automatically get 3 stars just for putting their life story out in the world to be judged. But if I didn't really like it because of poor writing style or my propensity to wonder: "What was the point of the 300 pages I just read? 🤔", it's probably gonna get 3 stars from me. If I loved it, my 5 star ratings are bit more generous for memoirs. For other books 3 stars to me usually means, it was alright or fine. And ones I didn't like, definitely not for me are 2 stars. Books that I think are objectively bad are 1 star. Objectively bad memoirs though, still get 3. *coughcoughgreenlightscough*

I either read a book slow or fast, it's all if I like the story that I move onto another book. It's like eating dinner. You slide the salad bowl over and put the dinner plate in front of you. Then after dinner, you sit in front of the tv with a bowl of ice cream. Did you remember how good that salad was? Every single thing you put in it. Can you recall the details? Probably or probably not. Overall, it was a good salad, you had a great dinner but the ice cream was sugar free? Meh. Point is, you can read 20 books in a month and retain kernels from each one or just from 5. It doesn't mean you didn't like them; they served their purpose, you got a chuckle out of them, and you moved on. Don't tell me it's not the same as doom scrolling or consuming so much social media. Calculate how much time you spent looking at it all or tally up how many shorts you watched. Two hours, 7 hours in a day.... that's a book. Depends on the length. Besides, some books are not what they are cracked up to be, so it's easy to toss it to the side and go, "Next!" I work in the food industry, I am at a slow volume store where I can listen to audiobooks in the times I'm prepping or when it's slow. I take those times, while my hands are busy, to listen to books.
@litwithleigh

Out of curiosity, do you feel like it's an attack on you that you have to explain yourself to this length? Do you think you'll change this person's opinion? You can tell someone the sky is blue until you're literally blue in the face and they'll still insist it's purple LOL. Sorry I know this msg sounds rude but unfortunately I feel like some ppl cannot fathom reading that many books no matter what. I read 230+ books in 2022 with my eyeballs so I know it's possible. However I think we can both agree no one is reading 400 pgs with their eyes in 120 mins lmao (unless they're a Spencer Reid type which is extremely rare)

There absolutely were giant spikes in Vampires and YA paranormal fiction after Twilight, and huge, huge, huge spike in teen dystopian after hunger games. There was less self-pub at the time, and some of it was publishers chasing trends (so books by authors that might not have been picked up or might not have been promoted that were in the "right" genre of the moment got picked up and promoted), some of it was authors chasing those trends tying to get picked up/promoted/ride the wave. My controversial unpopular bookish opinion is you haven't read the book if you listened to it as an audio book. You may have consumed the story and know the story (at least if you didn't fall asleep for some or zone out for parts), but you didn't *read it*, you had it read to you. Similar, but not quite as extreme as you didn't read the book if you watched the movie or mini-series adaptation.

Thanks for your thoughtful response. A couple people in the comments shared the same opinion about audiobooks with some interesting points to consider. Personally, I don't count my audiobooks as books read nor do I give them ratings (unless theyre truly atrocious) because I zone out and I need to see the sentence structure with my eyes to really judge the writing. A decent narrator can make the choppiest writing sound smooth.

I self-publish and I post on ticktock but I know the stuff I write isn’t going to get popular for a long time because I don’t write in the mainstream, also I like watching these types of videos and I never include tropes in the blurb. My most unpopular opinion is probably that listening to audiobooks is listening, not reading. Apparently I’m not allowed to think that nowadays because we MUST include people who can’t read as ‘readers’. Especially blind and dyslexic people, who apparently are EVERYWHERE watching videos and typing in comments sections. 🤣

@@litwithleigh yeah, that’s why I said it’s an unpopular opinion. 😅 It’s so stupid that it’s an unpopular opinion though, because it’s the correct opinion. It IS listening, not reading. People don’t seem to understand that when I say it’s not reading, I’m saying exactly that and nothing more. I don’t understand why it’s so controversial to call it listening rather than reading. I don’t care if people enjoy audiobooks. And I think it’s great that d!sabled people can still enjoy stories that way. I just don’t understand why people can’t just own it and say they listened to a story rather than read it. Seems to me like they’re just super insecure about it for some reason. I don’t like words being changed in order to accommodate including things that don’t fit the definition. If listening is reading now, then why draw the line at audiobooks? Why not include podcasts? When you keep expanding a word to include everything, it becomes meaningless. It just seems like it’s a ploy to try to make people feel better about themselves and to cover up the fact that literacy rates have been dropping lately. I don’t want to live in a world where kids aren’t actually taught to read, just taught to listen to recordings because it’s now deemed as the same reading. It’s not the same. It doesn’t help anyone to count people who can’t read as readers. It’s just a dümbing down of s0ciety.

I agree with you, and I’m a former special education teacher. Reading a book and listening to a book are 2 different ways of consuming a book. The book wasn’t read if it was listened to; the book was only consumed. People get so touchy over this and I don’t get it. My Granny can no longer hold a book bc her hands shake and she can no longer read a book bc her eyesight is basically gone, so she listens to audiobooks. Not once has my Granny ever said she read these books; she says she listened to these books. I didn’t read a television show when it was on in the background while I cooked in the kitchen for an hour. I didn’t read songs when I jammed out to the radio while in traffic. I listened to the tv show and I listened to the music. If you listened to the audiobook, then congrats, you consumed a book, but don’t tell me you read it and I won’t tell you I read a tv show and read a song on the radio. None of this is ableist; I’m not discriminating against people who cannot physically read a book (like my Granny) or who choose to not physically read the book. I’m just stating a fact that an audiobook means the book was listened to, and you didn’t read it. We have 5 senses. Which sense did you use to consume the book? Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

@@AliciaAnnReads Exactly! It’s not d!scriminating against people to say that they listened to it. I actually think it’s great that people like your Granny can still enjoy the stories through audiobooks! But yeah, it doesn’t make it reading just because people are offended and feel left out from being called readers. Reading is not defined as consuming a story (which is what these people are trying to redefine it as), it’s defined as decoding written words; audiobooks aren’t that. It’s not reading for the same reason that an adult reading a book aloud to a kid who can’t read isn’t the kid reading it. I don’t get why they can’t just call it listening. That’s what it is and there’s no shame in calling it that. People are just way too touchy and insecure nowadays.

regarding your comment on taylor swift (it's totally valid that you don't like her music, don't get me wrong, i respect that!), but i'm curious since you were willing to give her a chance, if you have ever listened to folklore or evermore? these two albums have her best lyrics by far, and since you said that you disliked her fun/cringy lyrics, which are more apparent in her pop songs, i'm curious what you'd think about her more mellow, folk type songs with better lyrics 😅

What are some songs I should listen to? Tbh I don't care about lyrics oftentimes (hence why I enjoy rich baby daddy) but ppl keep saying she's a great lyricist, which is why I was paying attention lol. It's just not my genre of music overall. I like music that gets me pumped up.

I'm confused. Are you doubting that anyone could read a 400pp. book in 2 hours? Or are you saying that of course it's possible? You kinda lost me, there. I mean, that's around 900WPM, yeah? That's fast, but not THAT fast. Why is this an issue at all, though? I don't get it. If one can accept that there are people who read a bit more slowly, why can't one accept that there are people who read - and comprehend - a bit more quickly, as well? Aaaand another thing: I would never shame someone for reading 200WPM. Would you? No, because it's not kind AND it doesn't matter. So, why is it seemingly ok to shame people who read 800...900...1000WPM?
