Ian was a poet, wordsmith, genius with really great band and their bass player Norman Watt-Roy Is one of the best ever, love the Blockheads.

Where to start with this - it’s one of the reasons I’m glad to be over 55 so I experienced this first time round. It’s a genuine masterpiece- drums, percussion, keys, 2x guitar and awesome bass. The bands backing vocals were just top notch too and Ian’s understated list recital was just dynamite. But the crazy thing is that the icing on the cake - the sax solo (in between again great keyboards , bass , drums and guitar ) only came about after a typically British industrial dispute over the Sax players wage. He certainly earned his money! A song I’ll never tire of - pure genius from start to finish and maybe the greatest instrumental break of all time followed by a harsh and almost scary guitar solo which drops the mood to the floor. Incredible

Love Ian Dury and the Blockheads, and this song in particular 😊 ♥. This track was very popular in Europe and I remember dancing to it at a big disco in Paris, France 💕. As you say, the sax solo is particularly fab. Their album New Boots and Panties, which was produced earlier than this track, is still one of my favourites. Wonderful stuff. Thanks so much for this 😊.

Hi Jane ... Ian Dury was so different from any of the other punk and new wave groups. Ian was a poet and the Blockheads were professional in their instrumentation. Each song was a new journey of sound and words. Great stuff! Keep rockin' ...

Its been said that Ian wrote this song because a sound engineer nearly died because he got electricuted on one of his gigs. Hence "No electric shocks". great song

The sax and guitar solo are so good. Johnny turnball on guitar who toured with talk talk mid 80s though I’m sure you know. Seen the blockheads a couple of times the last 5 years, still one of the best bands I’ve seen

Thanks Todd. One of my faves. Chaz Jankel went on to have a good solo career with his fusion of new wave/funk/dance music. He had a huge club hit with "Glad To Know You" in 1982. Which, if you have never heard the full 12" of that - then you owe it to yourself.

@@drivingwithtodd1781 You're surely have heard of "Ai no Corrida" by Quincy Jones? Well that's a Chaz Jankel composition which Quincy borrowed to revive his career. Glad to see Ian's brilliance is understood and appreciated by our cousins over the pond. Hope you have a copy of Cockney Rhyming Slang to keep you abreast of the lyrics. Been a fan since I saw him with Kilburn and The High Roads long time ago. One of Britains all time greats, should have been Poet Laureate.

What a great funky song , staying on the Ian Dury theme. Todd if you get a chance have a listen to the album Handsome by Kilburn and the High Roads i think you will enjoy it. On the album is the song Rough Kids, with reference to your video that you did on that song, From this album I thought that The Roadette Song was fantastic, in this song you can definitly hear the musical influence that the boys from Madness drew from in their own music.

Hi Martin ... I have not heard the complete Handsome album, only a few of the tracks. I will need to give the whole album a listen to. I may have to react to The Roadette Song since I have not heard that one yet. Thanks for the info and enjoy ...

This was the first commercially successful rap ever. Yes, it came out before Rapper’s Delight. Who da thought…the Brits invented Hip Hop 😂

Although it wasn't such a commercial success, nonetheless Aerosmith's 'Walk This Way' predates this song by four years.

@@darkmatter6714 - So, you think that 'Walk This Way' was a song created especially for Aerosmith's collaboration with Run-DMC? And yet you have the whole internet at your fingertips to search for things.

@@module79l28 How do you define rapping? I define it as lyrical delivery which has a cadence to it to but which lacks a discernible melodic structure. As in the kind of melodic structure which you can hum to and it would still be recognisable without the words. Pure rapping is not really “hum-able”, if that’s a word. Now, there are borderline tracks which straddle a fine line between the two, like the original Walk This Way by Aerosmith, but if you are going to include that, then you might as well include older material which straddles that fine line as well, like this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bNJ3fdh5s86vmp8.html Credit to Aerosmith for recognising that hey, Hip Hop is really taking off, this track could really lend itself well for some rappers to deliver it, let’s re-do it in that vain. What RUN DMC did was to distill that track and dampen the melody out of it, in favour of cadence, but that was an after-the-event occurrence when Hip Hop and rapping, as we know it, was already firmly established.
