Thank you SO MUCH for including that Admiral Lutjens ordered the scuttling of Bismarck. Too many "old school" historians will not admit that fact (that has been confirmed now for almost 20 years). Just to correct you a bit the crew had previously placed explosive charges on the Admirals orders as a "just in case" measure. After being decimated by point blank shelling and torpedo runs and still afloat, Lutjens issued the order to scuttle Bismarck. The sea cocks were opened and the charges detonated resulting in the clean separation of the stern approximately half way through the aft swastika pendant painted on his deck. Huge WW2 history geek here too. Particularly Battle of the Atlantic, Battle of the Denmark Strait, and the European theatre. Also when Bismarck and Prinz Eugen engaged Hood and Prince of Wales, the Brits opened fire on Eugen first mistaking Prinz for Bismarck as their silhouette were similar and from what I have read, researched and viewed Bismarck did not cross the T. Both sides were firing broadsides (though the German positioning did prevent the Brits from actively using their aft turrets - Bismarck and Prinz were further ahead) from a distance of 24 miles Bismarck, on her second salvo landed the shot that killed 1415 men and left only 3 survivors. Prince of Wales landed a round into one of Bismarck's fuel tanks forcing the course correction towards Breast and right into the path of Ark Royals Swordfish torpedo planes. There is a fantastic 2 part documentary from Channel 4 in the UK called Battle of the Hood and Bismarck. Very worth hunting down if you havent seen it ;)

Regarding the CGI: Sabaton has an ongoing cooperation with the gaming company War Gaming. They specialize in WW2 tanks and warships (World of Tanks, and World of Warships, respectively), so they have accurate models for the ships, water/wave/battle simulations etc. already and it's relatively easy for them to produce such videos. Still a lot of work for sure but they didn't need to start from scratch.

It's about _your reaction_ to the things you see in the vid, not a "watch-the-video-together"-format with no pausing at all (copyright issues aside). If you would keep your thoughts until the end of the video, most details and bits that you catched during the video will be lost and the reaction will contain just an aftermath/summary. For anyone wondering the video game developers for World of Warships, was the ones who did all of the ships and planes for the video, they have dedicated a lot of time and effort to recreating the ships (for Wargaming in general tanks AND planes) in all of their glory. WOWs history channel also tries to bring some more attention to the ships that are going unattended and need funding for repairs and to keep these beautiful ships open as museums, one being I believe the USS Batfish. Please if anyone wants keep some of these ships open for the public, visit one there are many all over the U.S. Also check out World of Warships so they can also continue to keep naval history alive and well, as well as Sabaton so they can continue to make beautiful music about the worlds many conflicts and heroic men.

It is really awesome to see someone who actually knows about the Bismarck. War Gaming's (the company Sabaton collabs with a lot) historical advisors are on point. They create games like World of Tanks and World of Warships. The advisor for World of Tanks has his own history channel on KZfaq. He was also a tank commander in the US Army. Also, Sabaton is perhaps the best war history band out there. All their songs are about military history or combat in general. They have a bunch of great songs. Screaming Eagles, To Hell and Back, 82nd All the Way, Carolus Rex (personal favorite), Sparta, and so on and so forth. Every history buff should discover them.

I learned about the Bismarck from the 1960 Johnny Horton song, Sink the Bismarck. Sabaton certainly has a different approach. 😄 Sabaton is an amazing band and it's staggering the themes they write about. Their songs inspires one to learn the historical context. The ship in the sights of the Bismark is the HMS Prince of Whales. You can tell by the boxy super structure of the King George V class and the three turrets. Two quad 14" guns and one double, which was the only one that worked during the battle because she was so new.

You are the only reactor I ever saw who caught on that early. The song tells the story of what happened, and how that compass came to have those coordinates in it, but most are too busy with the music to realize it.

Sabaton have a ton of songs to react to but I would especially recommend "En livstid i krig" the Great tour - Gothenburg" it's in swedish but there are subtitles for the lyrics so if you decide to do it remember to put them on. It's a fantastic live performance that will make you long for the days when Covid is gone and concerts can start again.

The two ships that fought against Bismarck during the battle of demark strait was the Prince of Wales which was a Battleship and the Hood which was a battlecruiser.

Coincidence: Sabaton are from the same town I grew up in. Sweden IS pronounced with ”W”, not ”V”. Sverige, on the other hand, is pronounced with a ”V”. Sverige is the swedish name, Sweden is the english name.

Isnt the british battleship in the first scene a King George V Class ship? If I saw correctly it only got 3 turrets, and i think almost every ww2 BB of Britain had this Gap in the ship.

14:15 Okay, so lots of stuff to talk about here. First, that is not the Hood, but one of the King-George-V-call battleships. From the storytelling it's probably the HMS Prince of Wales, which accompanied Hood on her final and fatal voyage. Note the distinct boxy conning tower, that is characteristic for the WW2 ERA British battleships, as compared to the old style found on Hood and the pre-refit Queen Elizabeths. Also Hood never had a plane on board, and also didn't have that gap. Thanks for listening!

It's funny you mentioned Ramstein and the movie XXX because Sabaton actually recorded a cover of the same song Ramstein did for that movie. The song is called Fire Frei.

A fun fact though, the battleship in the first scene was not the Hood. It was the Prince of Wales, the battleship that fought with the Hood in the Battle of the Denmark Strait. I believe the scene was taking place after the Hood was sunk, and the Bismarck briefly engaged the Prince of Wales thereafter. Really loved the reaction my guy!!

I knew this was going to be a good reaction when you started to comment on the compass. Seeing at least 50 different reactions tho this video, you are the only one that got the connection between the captain of the fishing boat and the young sailor. I am a history nerd too and am very familiar with the history of the battle of the Denmark Strait, the pursuit by the British fleet, and the gruesome end. But you managed to learn me a thing or two, your knowledge is fantastic!

So glad that someone who knows about history and specifically the Bismark is reacting to this. I did virtually the same thing when I first saw this. As for Sabaton military history expressed through song is their thing. Almost all of their material is telling the story of a battle, heroes, or war; no matter the side. You'll love these guys for that alone, of that I'm certain.

Great Reaction! Something to the sinking of the Hood : Bismarcks shell didn't go through the deck armor, at the range the hit occurred the shells trajectories wouldn't exceed 16 degrees (from the horizontal)! The 15 inch Magazines of the Hood were sourrounded by refitted 4 inch Magazines /Storages! And if a shell from Bismarck would manage to go to/near the Engine room and explode there (then the shell wouldn't have to go thru the 305 mm of belt armour, which was very low in the water btw) the splinters could easily reach the 4 inch Magazines which then could set off the 15 inch Magazines!! But there are many theories regarding the sinking of the Hood! The Video was shot in Turkey, the Harbour was in Istanbul, and the fishing boat is the Karadeniz B! The second ship you talk about at about the half of Video is NOT the Hood! It is the HMS Prince of Wales! Remember... At the beginning the Hood is already told to be sunk! The CGI in this video was done by Wargaming. They have some of the most accurate WWII and pre-WWII digital naval ship models in the world. World of Warships is a main staple of their games. Their gaming engine is actually what they used to make this video, they just cranked their graphics and physics to 100%.

My introduction was when I was probably 5 or 6 and heard my uncle play Johnny Horton's Sink the Bismarck. Song still stuck in my head 30 years later.

Interesting fact: You were using "she" when speaking about the Bismarck but in the song you can hear "he was built..." which is actually accurate because I think Hitler himslef decided that they will refer to Bismarck as to him instead of traditional her.

So. I enjoyed the historical aspect of this reaction. I'm a WW2 history buff, but with free time from family life. I recently got to know Sabaton from a co-worker, in which he was hired 4 weeks ago. He recommended I check out this band because of their historical relevance. I listened to their top 5 on spotify and I was enthralled. Now that I came across your reaction to this one music video. Love you, love the channel. Quick one, when you pause it and talk about seeing the HMS Hood, it isn't the Hood. The Hood had 4 turrets, 2 forward and 2 aft. The ship on screen has 3 turrets but the same 'gap' for a plane. You are looking at a King George V class battleship. I too am a massive WW2 naval history nerd! Big up the nerds!

I was a naval history nerd, too as i was a kid. Well..... i'm still a naval history nerd. Because of your awesome reaction to this, i had no other choice as to subscribe to your channel. There were to battleship vs battleship fights involving the Bismarck. The first was in the Denmark Strait between Bismarck and Prinz Eugen on one side and Hood and Prince of Wales (King George V-class battleship) on the other side. The other battle was the sinking of the Bismarck which occured in the Atlantic after Bismarck was attacked by the Swordfish bombers from Ark Royal and couldn't run away any more. There the Bismarck was attacked by the King George V (Admiral Toveys flagship) and the battleship Rodney as well as two heavy cruisers. I agree with everything you said, only one small detail: The ship you can see in the Video through the binoculars is either the Prince of Wales or the King George V not the Hood. I think its Prince of Wales because the scene is shown before the Swordfish attack. You can distinguish them by the number of gun turrets. Hood had 4 twin turrets (two front and two aft) just like Bismarck, while the King George V-class ships had 3 turrets (one quadruple and one smaller twin at the front and one quadruple aft). The Video was made in cooperation with wargaming. You should check out their game World of Warships. While the game is an arcade game and not a simulation, you should not expect much realism in the battles but the ship models are absolutely stunning.

I appreciate the fact you know the story. Most of the people who reacted to this had little clue if no clue at all to what the Bismark was and its significance. I am a WW2 buff as well mostly focusing on European Theater, and this is deffinatley a favorite.

I want to say that this is the first mid-video commentary that lasts more than 15 seconds I have been willing to watch. I am a mentally disabled adult who has desired to get into making KZfaq videos and people like you are my inspiration. My historical inspiration are both Norse mythology and WW2.

I suppose the ship being fired at is suppose to be the silhouette of the Hood. Take notice, the hood also had 4 twin turrets housing 15" rifles, and by the looks of it, I only see one aft turret. Also, when the Hood was modernized between the wars, her armor was increased, so when she was fully loaded with fuel, ammunition, and provisions, she sat low in the water, especially the quarter deck, which was built lower than the forward deck. She was known as a "wet" ship. This is more likely the Prince of Wales. The deck is one continuous line from stem to stern. Look at the width of "B" turret in relation to the other two. It is narrower, which would indicate a twin rifle configuration. The other two turrets on the Prince of Wales had four 15" rifles per turret. The superstructure is also that of the P.O.W.'s The masts are also different than the Hoods, and the funnels of the Hood are closer together and DID NOT have cranes between them. The P.O.W.'s however, did have those cranes, so in my estimation, this is the Prince of Wales. I don't know why they didn't show the Hood, probably to keep from opening old wounds. After all, the destruction of that battle cruiser was horrific.

As an aside, read up on the Battle of Tarranto. The Royal Navy carrier HMS Illustrious launched 21 swordfish to attack the Italian navy in port. The Italian strength was six battleships, seven heavy cruisers, two light cruisers and eight destroyers. The Swordfish damaged 3 battleships, 1 heavy cruiser, and two destroyers The thing about this battle was that it was thought impossible to launch torpedoes there as the harbour was only 39 feet deep and it was thought aerial torpedoes needed 75 feet to launch successfully. Later the Japanese sent their Naval attaché , Lt Cmdr Takeshi Naito from Berlin to investigate the attack. He later had a long conversation with Commander Mitsuo Fuchida, the leader of the attack on Pearl Harbour.

One of the best reaction video to Sabaton's Bismarck, that knows exactly what, which, how things happened during Bismarck chasing. Also, bind that information with music video's Mise-en-scène. Not a just typical reaction for CG or song, but with a large respect to a naval warfare history, which only the nerds like us know and understand. great job! But in some points, there's a missing. First, unlike the Jeff Budd's opinion at top, with camera and professional divers research in James Cameron's Documentary, most fatal thing that killing Bismarck were three(3) torpedos by UK cruiser, HMS Dorsetshire. Even before torpedos arrived, already half of the Bismark was sunk. There's pciture from HMS Dorsetshire filming that moment. And what made Bismarck holding UK fleets a long time is not a great technology of German. Ironically, Bismarck built in WWI era tech, which contains turtleback armor, idea came from Battle of Jutland / Skagerrakschlacht. Because of this, Bismarck's deck was really, really weak and thin and weak at shells from long range or high angle, but it had great opportunity to defense shells from broadside. UK didn't noticed that, so HMS Rodney and HMS King George V went close to Bismark, doing close quarters battle. They engaged close into 2km which is really close distance to battleships between battleship, which made their shells inefficient. But even with this, Bismarck's turret structure was poor, and rivets' quality were also not good, so after battle begun their turrets immediately broken by UK battleships' shells.

Some fun facts about the Bismarck, It's AA guns were set to hit "newer" faster planes, which is why by luck the British using out dated slower bi-planes to attack the Bismarck worked so well. Also the Bismarck was never meant to go out alone, the original plan called for 6 German Battleships and some Cruisers. How ever 5 of the battleships were being repaired and Hitler being his impatient self, ordered the Bismarck to sail with only the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen and three destroyers. The destroyers were left in Norway and the two ships sailed on.

OSN. The Bismark was shot at by over 4,000 shells, suffering 400+ hits to the ship. Even THAT, and several torpedo hits, was not enough to sink such a heavy (50,000 tons+) battleship. Yes, at the end, the British Navy torpedoed the Bismark, but from examination via ROV dives, which show that there are no large holes from torpedo hits in her hull, she was not 'sunk' by the British Navy. The Bismark's Admiral ordered that the petcocks be opened to scuttle the ship and deny her sinking by the British Navy, thus preserving the Honor of the Kriegsmarine (German Navy). So, you are totally correct about how she sank, and why her turrets are several miles from the resting place of her hull on the seabed. Once she had shed her turrets, as she sank, her hull would have turned upright again due to the weight of her keel. This is why she is upright today on the sea bottom. You are totally correct in the ranges of the ships as well. Bismark's 15 inch guns ranged out to 16 miles, and nothing Brittan had at sea could match that. Had that 'lucky' torpedo hit to her steering gear not occurred, I am certain the Bismark would have made it to a point where the Luftwaffe would have protected her into port in France. Although massively wounded, she could easily have been repaired and put to sea again to terrorize the ocean, and History would have told another tale of the Might German Battleship, the Bismark. Even though I am an American, I can appreciate the Engineering and genius of the Bismark and her design, and honor the memory of those that fought for their nation. Just as I acknowledge the bravery and persistence of the British Navy, as well as our own. the Sea is a harsh Mistress, and one that will take your life in oh, so many ways. Yet she is beautiful and majestic, and Humans have come to love her. Which is why ALL seamen, of any nation, will do their utmost to save other seamen of ANY nation, even though they be 'enemy' crewmen of a ship they have just sunk. You do not just ignore them and doom them to die in the Sea's embrace if you can possibly help in any way. Because they will not ignore you should the same happen to you. This sense of 'shared danger' was what led to the Christmas Ceasefire in WWI. And I wish it would happen more often in these modern times. You may not agree with your Foe's reasons for War. You may disagree with their religion, creeds, and other facets of their society... but in the end, they are Humans, just like us. They too want to live, survive, provide for their families, Serve their Nation, and obey their commanders, and live by their code of Honor. But none of those are reasons to hate the individuals that Serve. Be it on Land, Sea, or Air and soon, Space. The final scene you missed, where it has a text message about this. 'War knows no Nation' Frank-ly speaking.

In 1935 My grandfather moved to Hamburg from Bremen to take an Engineering position at the Bloom and Voss ship yards to help design the new Firing control systems for Bismarck and Tirpitz. He joined up and was was assigned to Bismarck a week after his launch. He was in Damage control most of the time but during the last battle had to go topside to help reset the firing control systems so he survived. The stories he told of his time aboard him where awesome and heart braking. He and another sailor where the ones that rescued Oscar the cat. I never got to meet any of my grandparents but his journals and the stories passed on where inspiring.

At 14:21 it's the Prince of Wales the battleship that was sailing with the Hood. Since the Hood had the same turret configuration as the bismark but the Prince of Wales had a unique setup of two quad turrets - one fore and one aft - and a single dual turret in a forward super-firing position.

You know, I just re-watched this video (which I love) and realized that this is the first time in years I've heard anyone besides my grandpa use the term "monoplane." My grandpa was a sergeant in the Army Air Corps during the war and taught me and my brother most of what we know about aeronautics.

I have a late relative that I can pretty much thank for turning me into a history nerd, too. My late grandpa served in the Pacific Theater on the carrier USS Randolph (CV-15 during WW2 then CVS-15 before she was decommissioned). They were part of the picket groups that were tasked with watching Japanese movements during the war. My grandpa was below decks playing cribbage with a fellow shipmate when the Randolph was hit by a kamikaze that put a hole in the starboard aft (don't quote me on the location 'cuz my naval terminology is a little rusty) and wound up injuring and killing a number of sailors. He was physically fine, could never play cribbage ever again after that. The good thing is that he lived to be 93 years old and lived a full, long life. I'm with you OldSkule! I was born in 1962 and grew up making models of everything related to WWII. My favorite was the Tiger Tank. I had a huge model of the Tiger that had all of the interior and was motorized. Took me 6 months to finish. I had a huge motorized version of the Tirpitz as well. Being a kid, I never connected how "bad" the Germans were. I was just fascinated by their technology. I could tell you what tank they were using in films (mostly American tanks with swastikas on them), what plane, you name it. Recently found some amazing Russian movies that feature the T-34. While I'm sure they are loaded with propaganda, they have a knack for special affects that are outstanding when it comes to tank battles. Cool video! Thanks! 👍

If i am not mistaken that old sailor in the Start of the video was one of the Survivors from the Bismarck world of warships helped making this video for them

It's crazy to hear how many people actually survived on both the Bismark and the HMS Hood! The Bismark had a crew compliment of 2,000 and only 115 survived the sinking. While the HMS Hood had a crew compliment on 1,418 and only 3 of them survived her sinking.

Haven't finished the video yet, but as a german myself i really do appreciate a lot that you pronounced the name of the "Prinz Eugen" perfectly.

My son was on their Stockholm concert early 2020, just before the outbreak came. It was his first concert & he is still living on that hype lol They do an awesome job mixing music with history.

The reason the Hood 'came on' at the Bismark, whilst the Bismark was Broadside is because of a partial refit and up armouring to the front of Hood, The stern of the ship was only very lightly armoured in comparison and the British commander knew this so was trying to protect his stern from plunging fire from the enemy by getting closer than he would have normally.

14:17 so that's not the hood, it's actually the King George V, which is a very similar ship to the Prince of Whales, which was with the Hood at the time of her sinking several days prior. This video is depicting the Bismark being intercepted after it sank the Hood as it was making a break for the French coast and Luftwaffe air cover. Love the video! Cheers

The dead giveaways are the three turrets (Hood had four twin turrets like Bismarck and Prince of Wales had two quads and one twin that was superfiring over the forward quad), the forward superstructure is that very blocky and square design that the British started using with the Nelson-class onwards as well as the modernized Queen Elizabeths, the funnels are too far apart, and there is no rear tripod mast. Also, the Swordfish was actually the Royal Navy's frontline torpedo bomber all the way through the war, outlasting several aircraft intended to replace her.
