As for the saving him part. There are some unspoken laws in warfare. In this case, if a battleship is sinking, you are not allowed to harm or kill the survivors whilst they are in the water. Same with a dog fight. If a jet is shot down and the pilot is alive and parachuting down, enemy pilots are not allowed to kill him on the ground or whilst going down. It's not an official law but more in the sense of dignity in war. A fair fight, like the song "No bullets fly". There is no honor is shooting down a plane with no defenses.

The story of the Bismarck is one of the most fascinating naval story's of ww2 in my opinion. The brittish feared the ship because of its armor, firepower and speed. Seriously treathening naval supremacy for the brittish. We know what kind of damage the gneisenau caused in the southern Atlantic. Imagine if this beast was released on merchant shipping and escort missions. Might even shifted the balance of war between the Germans and the brittish and forced the brittish on there knees. As someone who wants to study history, this kind of things fascinate me. Ps, thans for taking time reading this commend. I wish y'all a wonderful day. Sorry for some Grammer mistakes. There is no feasible way that the Bismarck could have ever threatened the RN in any real capacity. They overestimated the ship's capability just because it detonated the Hood in one extremely lucky shot, and the idea of, "well, if it destroyed the Hood so easily, imagine what it could do to our merchant shipping" crept in and caused Admiral Tovey to mobilise the entire navy to stop it, when even just the King George V and Nelson with a small escort would have been more than enough. Bismarck was a beautiful ship, but had numerous design flaws, such as an outdated armour scheme and underpowered main batteries, to name a few. She actually damaged her own radar after firing a warning shot at HMS Suffolk for shadowing her, which is why Prinz Eugen was in the lead when Hood and PoW finally caught up with them. Her armour scheme proved detrimental when a shell from PoW went right through the bow and ruptured a fuel tank, and that torpedo that hit her stern during the Swordfish attack wouldn't have crippled her if the designers had taken that possibility into account; it would have been possible for her to maintain course despite the hit if she had been designed right, but alas.

She was a product of British propaganda. Bismarck served no real threat. Had she survived, Britain would have parked a fleet to remove her from the board. Tirpitz, who underwent this fate, served more of an issue, as the British fleet was stretched thin. Tirpitz could have caused some serious issues had the Kriegsmarine been able to fuel the Lonely Queen of the North. Tirpitz parking herself in an Artic convoy would have been a problem for the Soviet front.

"kinda of like a metal band" As a history teacher, I'd think you'd do a little bit of research on the band and what they do lol Don't get me wrong, I love your videos just thought it was a little humorous. And yes. Bismarck displaced 49,500 tons fully loaded and was crewed by 2,065 men. Only around 400 managed to live to abandon ship and out of them, only 114 would live, mostly due to the British abandoning the rescue effort due to a possible U-Boat sighting. One of the men picked up by the Brits died of his wounds and 5 of the 114 were picked by a U-Boat and a German trawler.
@Rybo-Senpai
@Rybo-Senpai 4 жыл бұрын
Well I wouldn't blame the British for abandoning the rescue operation given the Germans did the same thing off the coast of Africa regarding a Passenger liner where 3 Uboats were engaged in rescue operations but had to break off after the Americans decided to attack the Uboats and in turn the survivors of the Liner the lead Boat had sunk, the ships survivors were made up of British Soldiers, Italian POW's being transported and a mix of civilians including Women and Children. During the rescue operation Vichy French ships were on route to assist as were it is claimed some Nearby British Warships but ultimately due to the actions of the US Army Airforce operating from the Ascension Islands, then and now British Territory and a B24 Liberator on Patrol, the officer in charge of US Forces ordered the aircraft to attack, forcing the Germans hand... As the Germans had done to the British after the sinking of Bismark... Sadly in War there are challenges that I feel today it would be difficult to judge as we for the most part have no experience of such events on such a scale. Most who had some experience in war of that scale.. Are sadly already passed or just about too, as it currently stands I believe and I could be wrong. All original members of Easy Company as seen in Band of Brothers have sadly passed on while some of the men who joined the company after the start of combat operations as Replacements are surviving.

Teacher: "Ok class, who know anything about the siege of Vienna?" *Dramatic metal music slowly fades in from the back of the class* Teacher: "w-w- what's happening?" "When the winged hussars arrived!" Teacher: "omg... what is happening right now?" *the classroom shakes violently, dust falls from crumbling mortar as bricks smash and widows crack. Smoke and the ominous thunder of distant artillery fills the air, mingling with the powerful music as a voice begins to sing* Joachim: "A cry for help in time of need, await relief from holy league, 60 days of siege, outnumbered and weak Sent a message to the sky, wounded soldiers left to die, Will they hold the wall or will the city fall?" *The teacher, dumbstruck, adjusts his glasses, the class, enraptured at the terrible truth to which they now find themselves a part of, looking bewildered upon layers of desperate fortification, fighting positions and what looks to be a hopeless city full of starving and fearful people, some young, some old, all resisting, all fighting though outnumbered by a great army of Ottoman Turks, above whom the battle tattered flag of the great Kara Mustafa Pasha proudly flies, his Janissaries move in formation toward a breach in the city wall, but are repulsed by the cities defenders* Joachim: "Dedication, dedication, they're outnumbered 15 to one, and the battle's begun" *the class turns to the sound of distant hoof beats and the clatter of wooden wings, a substantial force of horsemen approach from atop the mountain, but will they be enough? Will they make it in time?* Joachim: "Then the winged hussars arrived! Coming down the mountainside. Then the winged hussars arrived, coming down they turned the tide!" *but would they though? The class watches in mute horror as they see the ottoman soldiers carrying explosives into a mine shaft extending nearly a mile from their camp to the walls of the beleaguered city, they mean to destroy their walls! The Janissaries approach in formation, awaiting the blast, anticipating their queue to visit death upon the belligerent city of Vienna.* Joachim: "As the days are passing by and as the dead are piling high, no escape and no salvation, trenches to explosive halls are buried deep beneath the walls, plant the charges there and watch the city fear... Desperation, desperation, it's a desperate race against the mine, and a race against time!" *gallant polish Hussars, winged and glorious bear down upon the gathered army, picking up a breakneck pace as they set themselves into a charge down the side of the mountain, with graceful violence they rush past the startled class, their focus not on them, but rather, upon the gathered host of Kara Pasha... but with the charges set, cam they make it in time? The answer comes in the clash of steel and the crack of cannons as the winged hussars barrel into the surprised janissaries, breaking their ranks and forcing a retreat. All the while Joachim sings:* "Then the winged hussars arrived! Coming down the mountainside! Then the winged hussars arrived! Coming down they turned the tide!Cannonballs are coming down from the sky! Janissaries are you ready to die? We will seek our vengeance eye for an eye. You'll be stopped upon the steps of our gate. On this field you're only facing our hate but back home the sultan's sealing your fate" *Joachim is then joined by a chorus of grateful survivors from the city below as they rejoice:* "We remember, in September, that's the night Vienna was freed, we made the enemy bleed!" *Then the Hussars march by chanting;* "Storm clouds, fire and steel, death from above make their enemy kneel..." *then, just as quickly as it had begun, the broken walks of the class reform themselves, leaving a tongue tied teacher, his bewildered class, and a surly looking metal singer standing before them. The teacher says nothing, the class is silent.* Joachim: "and that's what happened at the battle of Vienna," the class bell rings, "class dismissed," he drops his mic and walks out.

Glad to see you liked the video. Sabaton is a Swedish metal band. Around 2008 they were still kinda small, I recall that, but they kept on making amazing music and they grew big. They are pretty big. And this is what they do. They make songs about history of warfare. They also have a history vlog on their KZfaq channel or I don't know, something like that. Their most famous songs are proly about WW2, but they also make songs about heroes from different nations - the Finns and Czechoslovaks stick to me as they are kinda "my heroes", but there are songs about the US marines, the couple of men holding Ardenes, the samurai, etc..... it all seems to me like a huuuge memorial to all men and women that died fighting, whoever they were fighting. Also, speaking of women, Night Witches is a blast! About the russian female bomber regiment. Love it. Plus their songs as metal songs make us fans feel the glory and strength of the war machinery. It bugs the shit out of me that he missed the dedication in the last few seconds of the video, which would have explained the theme of the video for him, so here it is: "War knows no nation. This video is dedicated to those who fought to the bitter end in the Battle of the Atlantic." Also, in-case it wasn't obvious, the tugboat captain is the young sailor who survived the sinking of the Bismark, the coordinates written into the silver pocket watch he carries are the (apparent) rough latitude-longitude of the Bismark's wreck. 'Kriegsmarine' is the name of the German Navy during World War II, of which the Bismark was the flagship; most ships are referred to as female, Bismark was the only battleship in history to be specifically referred-to as male, hence, 'king of the ocean'. As a side note, it would be interesting to see him react to Sabaton's new album, "The Great War", which revolves entirely around World War I.

While the Bismarck class Ships surely where the "biggest" the Nazis did build the Bismarck wasnt the "flagship". The "Panzerkreuzer Admiral Graf Spee" was the Flagshipt till the "Gneisenau" (Scharnhorst Class) was done in 1938. The Gneisenau was destroyed 1942 in a Bombing Raid. Normally every Ammunition had to be cleared of the Ship during Docking. But because the shi pwas deemed "slightly damaged by a Mine" and meant to only be 2 Weeks in the Dock they didnt. When a Bomb hit the Deck it broke through to the Ammunition Storage. And i think the Admiral Graf Spee Story is well known. Battled 3 British Ships, heavily damaged in Uruguay and only 72 Hours for Repairs. Because of misinformation the Captain decided to sink the ship rather than to fight. He thought the where more British Ships now waiting. Oh while we are at it. The Bismarck wasnt the biggest Ship build by the Germans during the War. The Tirpitz (also Bismarck Class ship) got so much modifications that it was 1200 tons heavier than the Bismarck and that is actually the "biggest" ship they build. Same could be said about the Myth of "Bismarck was the heaviest armed shp of the Kriegsmarine" ... nope the Tirpitz had the same till one "upgrade" where it got 4 Torpedo Launchers .... so it was heavier armed at that point.

The pursuit of the Bismarck is considered one of the most thrilling and exciting naval operations of all times, and this video - for a music video - actually goes a surprisingly good job of telling it's story. If you listen to the radio at the start, you'll hear the commentator say how Bismarck sank the battlecruiser Hood. The first firefight you see is taken from that action, the Battle of the Denmark Straits, the Hood has been sunk, and Bismarck is exchanging gunfire with HMS Prince of Wales. The next action you see shows Swordfish biplane torpedo aircraft flying off HMS Ark Royal, attacking the Bismarck, with one torpedo slamming into her stern. This torpedo was the battleship's nemesis, jamming her steering gear and leaving her uncontrollable. The final firefight is when the British finally sank the German battleship, including the torpedoes being launched from the cruiser HMS Dorsetshire and hitting Bismarck, the last weapons to be fired against her. Officially this cruiser was credited with sinking the Bismarck, although this was only a technicality, as she was the last ship to hit her during the final battle. This video was all made for the song, and the ships are really accurate! Indeed, while I don't pretend to be an expert, I have studied this ship quite a lot, and I can't see anything misplaced on the ship in the video, compared to what she was like in real life. The only slight criticism I would make is in the final battle, you see a ship with four triple turrets fire at Bismarck. There were no cruisers like that in the final action. The nearest was HMS Sheffield, but she was part of Force H (along with the previously mentioned Ark Royal), and didn't take part. It would also have been nice if they had included the battleship HMS Rodney in the final battle. Her 16" guns proved to be totally devastating, with one of their shells taking out both Bismarck's main forward turrets. Still, I suspect the money involved in making this video was already nothing to sniff at, and adding Rodney would have added yet more expense.

A few cool little tidbits: The Bismarck is referred to with male pronouns in the song exactly as he was in real life, because his captain insisted such a powerful warship could not be referred to as a lady. The orientation of her guns in the video is true to how they were when Bismarck was sunk in real life. All the battle damage she sustained was historically accurate as well. The Swordfish biplanes that damaged her are also a fun fact: being outdated WW1 era planes also meant the advanced targeting systems of the Bismarck's anti aircraft guns were unable to track the slower planes since they were designed to shoot down faster planes. Similarly, the canvas fuselage meant any rounds that hit the planes would overpenetrate and do minimal damage to the aircraft. The radio at the start also reports on how Bismarck sunk the HMS Hood, the pride of the Royal Navy, and the subsequent British response to dedicate their fleets in the Atlantic to sinking the Bismarck

@Knasterreal1 In the final fight RN and Polish ships still launched torpedoes to Bismarck. And even if the Bismarck doesn't sunk by those torps it doesn't mean those torps not hit the ship, but caused no or minimal damage. Even the Swordfish planes hit Bismarck more than one time, BUT only the one which hit the Rudder caused anything. And even that planes pilot thinked it was uneffective until he returned to Ark Royal and got the info. (We can see his face on the video as he angry after the uneffective hit).

The band is Swedish, and yes that is their thing, they do history inspired songs, i personally love how they fuse together historical context and good music, like, the songs have enough historical context to make you interested in the topic they are singing about and research it yourself, but at the same time not too much raw historical data, it is a song after all not a timeline. That combination is working perfectly imo, from their songs i've learned about many historical events and figures i didn't know about before. Oh, as for the video, it is so amazing because this clip was made in cooperation with Wargaming, a game company making a game called World of Warships, that is why the ship models look so beautiful.

They do have the odd non-history original song and do covers of other metal songs, but it is 90% history songs. Some find them cringey, disrespectful, or whitewashes of the songs protaganists(a few songs told from WW2 Germany's pov are especially controversial), I can see why people think that way but I view them as a tribute to history as whole. They tend to choose events of heroism, valour, or importance to history with little regard for the greater context(although Sweden is more heavily focused for obvious reasons). They aren't a good teaching tool due to bias and oversimplification but certainly make you aware of tales you otherwise may have missed.

I recently got into the band after it showed up on a Spotify playlist, they are from Sweden. Every Sabaton Song is a mini military history lesson, they have also in about the last year or so started a separate history channel with a short documentary about the historical events of each song and one of the band members talking a bit more about the song, maybe about writing it, or meeting someone that is a descendant of the person the song is about, or playing near the battlefield where the events took place, all super interesting stuff I've learnt some things from it.

@@jlswlf7408 America was one of the kindest armed forces during WW2. During the battle of Berlin, Wehrmacht divisions would run to the West in order to surrender to U.S. armed forces because of how recklessly the Red Army was slaughtering them. Men like Guderian and Manstein only lived for so long because the soviets never got their hands on them. This is the first "A History Teacher Reacts" vid I've watched, but he leaves me questioning. The Bismarck had some pretty defining structuring. Just like the Iowa Class and Yamato Class, Bismarck and her sister ship Tirpitz were easy to identify. I'm guessing WWII isn't his strong point in teaching. Even my history teacher (31 years ago) didn't just teach from the book. He taught you the stories that made the history. Anne Frank, Tuskegee Airmen, Bismarck, Yamato.... he made sure you know why those events were so important and the legends behind them. The planes taking off- what carrier was that? Even 31 years later I can tell you- the Ark Royal. THAT is what a teacher can do for you. Ya gotta step outside the books and learn the history behind the history so you can pass it on.

And to answer your last question, they are from Sweden. They have a pretty awesome album about their own history as well.

The 2002 documentary Expedition: Bismarck, directed by James Cameron and filmed in May-June 2002 using smaller and more agile Mir submersibles, reconstructed the events leading to the sinking. These provided the first interior shots. His findings were that there was not enough damage below the waterline to confirm that she had been sunk rather than scuttled. Close inspection of the wreckage confirmed that none of the torpedoes or shells had penetrated the second layer of the inner hull. Using small ROVs to examine the interior, Cameron discovered that the torpedo blasts had failed to shatter the torpedo bulkheads

Probably not because we were Teenagers and couldnt appretiate other things just told from books. Nowadays with the easy acces to internet for everybody and the Videos from Sabaton our History Teacher would have been a fking legend if he played the song and then talked about it...atleast for the metalheads in our class and probably even for the others because that is what awakes interest if you ask me. This may be a bit late since this was uploaded a year ago. But if youndidnt already catch it the captain of the boat that the band is on has the pocket watch that the Bismark commander had that wrote the coordinates that the Bismark sank at. The guy was the young sailer that was rescued at the end.
