My favorite acoustic song of all. I tried to learn it when it came out in standard tuning and of course it sounded nothing like the song, then some 10 years later it was tabbed out in the alternate tuning JP uses and turns out it's a pretty simple song to play once you tune correctly.

I have always loved Zep and this song. My wife 9 years ago surprised me and walked down the aisle to the music part (starts on this video at 1:49). Beautiful song. Unfortunately she passed away in 2019 after giving birth to our 2nd lil girl. This song hits in so many different ways now. Phenomenal band. Masterpiece of a song.

As others have mentioned, this song was Jimmy's response when he heard George Harrison from The Beatles say Led Zeppelin didn't have any ballads. It's working title was "slush" for it's softer, gentler quality. Robert considered it one of his best vocal performances with Led Zeppelin. I believe all the "orchestra" parts were played by John Paul Jones on the Mellotron. One of the first created synthesizers, it used analogue samples recorded on audio tape. It was also a bitch to keep tuned because depending on how often you played it, how hard you pressed the keys, how fast you played, etc., it would go out of tune. Jonesy used to worry about taking it on tour because he never knew if it would stay in tune or not. I mentioned somewhere else that this song is moody, melancholy, and triumphant all at the same time and it's my favorite song off this album.
@JJM3rd
@JJM3rd 2 жыл бұрын
The Mellotron used a length of magnetic audio tape. As with any physical medium, tape could expand or contract depending on temperatures, humidity, etc, so in live settings with hard to control conditions they could be a real bitch. Tape could also just break. Tape could also stretch over time and the pitch could change slightly. The Mellotron was essentially an analog sampler, the precursor to the digital samplers that emerged in the 80s. A cool gadget in its time for sure, but very temperamental and challenging at times. But, it beat the hell out of having to take a full orchestra out on the road with you, for instance!

Hey guys, I heard a conversation with David Gilmour and Roger Waters, and their experience with a Mellotron, on Dark Side. Their only complaint was that one could only hold a note for a maximum of eight seconds before cutting out. Any truth to that? Also, on “Custard Pie,” is that a Clavinet ( sp?) JPJ is using? It’s beautifully woven into the groove. ( Same instrument Steve Wonder used for “Superstition” for those that may not know the sound described here) Regards
