My reaction to Led Zeppelin's tight yet nimble, proficient yet unpretentious "The Song Remains The Same" and the sentimental and beautifully arranged "The Rain Song" live from Madison Square Garden in 1973.
Let me know what other Zeppelin songs I should react to!

Jimmy page says that his favorite moment and one that he always had to try so hard not to cry in is when the keys come in during the rain song. I saw your face when it happened and could see that something about that moment is pretty great.

Other “softer” songs I would recommend: 1. “That’s the way” and “going to California” Live 1975 earls court. They do a mini acoustic set sitting on stools, JPJ plays a mandolin, it’s gorgeous. 2. “Gallows pole” 3. “Hey hey, what can I do?” 4. “Ten years Gone” I almost hesitate recommend this one so early in your Zeppelin journey... we’ll come back to it ;)

Jimmy wrote “The Song Remains the Same”, originally intending it to be an instrumental, an overture leading into “The Rain Song”. Robert came up with lyrics after listening to it and Jimmy loved it. He’s’s really picking that 12 string isn’t he? Yeah ,this was the movie. They each portrayed what image they wanted to represent, including their manager.

As much love and appreciation as these two pieces get - it's not enough. These are some of the most original, dynamic and beautiful pieces ever recorded. Zep have evolved to a new level here where calling them rock songs seems to come up short. These are rock compositions for guitar, bass drums and vox, etc... I have gotten chills listening to these back to back for more than 30 years and I never get enough. In terms of writing original, creative and inspired music - you could argue that they never topped this peak, but they got close many many times.

@@emmanuelflores9983I think Page is the greatest guitarist ever, others argue that he’s sloppy, I think his improv in lives is what makes him the greatest. Does he sometimes make small mistakes, I only know of one, but they liked things not always being perfect. George Harrison of The Beatles had come to one of their concerts, backstage talking to Bonham, he said their problem was no ballads. Jimmy wrote the lyrics & music for The Rain Song, the first few chords are from a song of Harrison’s lol. Just one more thing that shows the musical genius that Jimmy is, yes him & Plant collaborated on other song’s lyrics, this was all Jimmy. How Thank You isn’t considered a ballad I don’t know, Robert wrote that for his wife Maureen. It was my husband & my wedding song 39 years ago, as well as for so many other couples. All Of My Love is another beautiful slow song, a tribute to Plants 5 year old son who passed away, in 77 while the band was touring in the US. Thank you again.

I heard “The Rain Song” was the result of George Harrison of the Beatles saying that Zeppelin never did ballads. You know, there are 2 or 3 long interviews of Jimmy Page don’t within the last 5 or 10 years that I think you would really enjoy. He is an amazing person.

The beautiful landscape that you commented on is in the hills of Wales. Plant grew up in the west of England, close to the Welsh border, and has always felt his heart pulled to the Celtic myths and the beauty of the mountains there...and to the sea. After traveling and living in different parts of the world for 45 years, he now spends most of his time between tours on his estate....several hundred acres of hills, forest and streams, in this area. He calls it The Shire.....How Cool is that? After all his travels, his heart brought him back to the Shire.

This is excerpts from their film “The Song Remains the Same”. They interspersed the concert footage and fantasy together. “The Rain Song” was written by Page in response to George Harrison telling him that he doesn’t write ballads. So Page used the first couple of chords from “Something”, George’s ballad as an “I’ll show you a ballad”. Also as he strums the last chord line he very deftly tosses the pic to do the finger work. You hardly notice the pic toss. Then he slides one out of his mouth. He is such a master.

I saw them at Kiel Auditorium in St Louis in 1970. It was a redo of a previously canceled concert because Robert Plant had a throat infection. When he came out on stage he said... "I think it's been a long time since I rock an' rolled". That song was usually played as an encore. Instead they came out doe 4 encores. After the 3rd one everyone started to leave thinking it was over. They stayed out a LONG time. Finally, we heard them start a new song and people got stomped trying to get back in. I was a little "Buzzed" at the time but, I remember it like it was this morning. I am 65 and an ex- drummer. Bonham was and is my hero. Thx for the vid!

I would recommend "Kashmir." it's sort of a softer song. Not quit as soft as this but not a all out rocking piece either. It is also arguably their second most popular song behind Stairway but to me a much better song than Stairway. It has a middle eastern flair to it. But it came out 2 years after this concert was filmed and the only version of it I have seen on youtube is from the 1979 concert and while not horrible, the sound quality and the songs from that concert for the most part are just not as good as the stuff from 1977 and earlier. Also, this might have been the height of page's heroine addiction and it shows at times. So for that reason I would recommend doing the studio version of the song or the version from 2007 when they did their reunion concert. It is telling that the 2007 version is better than the 1979 version. Also, it sort of fun seeing what they look like old. Oh, "Ten Years Gone" from Physical Graffiti is soft and you might even like it better than this. I think Physical is their greatest album. it's a double album and the whole first side is one classic after another. Kashmir is also on this album

(I don’t think I’ll ever be able to choose my favorite... perhaps a top 10! 😄. If you seem to gravitate (at the moment) to their slower tunes, one tune immediately come to mind: EXCELLENT slow song in concert that no one ever listens to is THAT’S THE WAY, Earls Court 1975! Powerful message about people growing up on opposite sides of the tracks (they were referring a bit about themselves as well because they used to get kicked out of restaurants & bars (in the Deep South at gunpoint even!) due to their clothes and long hair. I’ll BET YOU it will be one if the best acoustic guitar / Mandolin tunes you’ve ever heard (much like Going to California). No drums. To this day, some of their music (including and especially the entirety of this concert) makes me feel thankful to be alive. Since it already looks like you're going to be taking a bunch of Zeppelin songs for a spin and you seem to dig guitar virtuosos, I'd recommend you try Sultans of Swing (Alchemy Live) by Dire Straits, it's absolutely bonkers. The Rain Song is about falling in love and how it compares to the season. May I recommend the live version with just Robert and Jimmy live back in the 19900s after John Bonham had died. It’s the Rain Song. This song is like getting stoned, crying, and making love to the person you love most and have the most passion for too. The hole very very deep. I don't know that there's a live video of them playing it but essentially it was written by Robert Plant and it's the story of his looking back on his life and the real life decision he had to make when Zeppelin started the blow up, but his longtime girlfriend at the time said she wasn't sticking around if he was going to travel the world playing music, so he had to decide what it was going to be. This is him looking back on Ten Years Gone after the decision he made.... awesome tune you'll definitely enjoy it

The one song transitioning to another is a Led Zeppelin hallmark which were later followed by all other bands and singers in the 70's. The song sounds familiar because almost every singer and band later on sampled their songs 😊

Thank you for staying focused on the music. Often times people get distracted by the fantasy sequence and that's all they comment about as I watch and want to scream "Listen to the bloody *music* for crying out loud!!!" . So, again, an immense thanks for that. The Rain Song is one of the few that can make me cry. If you want straight up LZ instrumental, watch White Summer/Black Mountain Side from Royal Albert Hall (it's in KZfaq) or listen to Bron Y-Aur (it's pronounced like brawn rawr and is the name of a place in Wales where Jimmy and Robert went and write a bunch of songs that would turn up on the 3rd album). It's short but very sweet. In fact, most of the third album has acoustic guitar, so you should check it out in its entirety. Thanks again. Cheers!

I don't know why they can't be played apart, except in the mind of the record collector they're consecutive tracks on 'Houses of the Holy' (their album at the time). But it is difficult to think of one without the other following it.

Other softer, folky songs you may enjoy from LZ: That’s the Way / Babe I’m Gonna Leave You / Battle of Evermore / Down By the Seaside / Tangerine / White Summer Black Mountain Side is a solo acoustic guitar piece. Also Bron-Yr-Aur is another solo acoustic guitar piece

The Rain Song was written after George Harrison said to Jimmy Page that Zeppelin was great but lacked having written any ballads. This was his response

I've seen a lot of "....reacts to Led Zeppelin" on KZfaq, and yours is the best, Emmanuel. It's authentic, and thoughtful, and appreciative. Great job, man, and I hope you keep more of these videos coming. I know how you like "How Many More Times" on the 1st album. You should check out the Royal Albert Hall version that's on the How the West Was Won DVD if you can get your hands on it. It was taken off of KZfaq (assume for copyright reasons), and I don't know of any other digital editions, so you might just have to spring for the DVD box set. Well worth it, though.

The 3 piece band that sounds like an orchestra with Robert adding his incredible voice. Robert used to wear women's shirts so they fit too small. Rain Song is Zeps most beautiful song to me.

This is nearly the pinnacle for them - and most of Physical Graffiti. Page isn't as technically accurate as some players (his good friend Jeff Beck comes to mind), for creativity, pushing the envelope and feel, it's hard to fault him. And what a producer, on top of all that - his mastery of studio techniques was groundbreaking
