FYI the hot blonde who played Miss Hopkins(who thought Shemp was Cousin Basil), actually sang the recorded version of "Voices of Spring" that Shemp was playing at the beginning of the episode. Her name was Christine McIntyre, and she was a professional singer. She's in several Stooges shorts.

Her name is Christine McIntyre. She was a frequent Stooges supporting cast member. She had problems beating up on Shemp in this film -- she didn't want to hurn him. But Shemp, the show biz trooper, told her to really let him have it and she did in the final take.

@pgh45rpms Yes she supposedly broke his nose and knocked him out. She tearfully apologized to him but Shemp never blamed her.

The actor playing the professor ("Hold hands you lovebirds") was Emil Sitka who was in many stooges shorts. In the 70s they were looking at making a comeback but Larry suffered a stroke and eventually passed, Emil was slated to take over as Larry's cousin Harry. But before they could really get anything going Moe's health went into decline so the comeback never happened. Some fans consider him to be the "4th stooge". "Hold hands you lovebirds" is even written on Emil's gravestone.

No, TV was not out yet when the Stooges started making these shorts and was not common for people to own until the 50's. Back in the day, Three Stooges shorts would play prior to the feature in theaters. In those days there were always some type of shorts played prior to the main feature.

They did try to get on TV and did a pilot for ABC, it was close to going to series but Columbia stepped in and blocked it as they considered TV to be a competitor to short films and basically said them or us. So the stooges kept the steady work rather than risk something new.

Actually, Moe, Shemp and Curly were using stage names to some degree. Moe's name was Moses and Curly's name was Jerome and they as well as Shemp (Samuel) had the last name of Horowitz. Larry's name was Louis Feinberg. These shorts were originally shown in movie theaters well before television went mainstream. Theaters would usually show a cartoon or short subject, a newsreel, and coming attractions before the actual movie would start.

The story with Shemp's name when the Horowitz immigrated to the US, customs asked their name their father said his name was Sam but because of his thick accent the customs agent thought he said Shemp.

By the way, it probably is shaving cream. Shaving cream is what they used to make the pies that they threw in these films. Reason: real dairy products spoil under studio lights. So yes, probably real shaving cream.
