Ayurvedic Approach to Managing Condition Associated with Jaundice with few examples
Jaundice, characterized by the yellowing of the eyes (scleral icterus) as per contemporary medical terminology, finds its parallel in Ayurveda with terms like "Haridra Netra" (eyes resembling turmeric) or "Peeta netra" (yellowed eyes). “Haridra nakha twak adhi” is used when jaundice is seen in nails skin etc. If it turns greenish hue then it is termed as “harita”. In Ayurveda, conditions where the eyes manifest yellowing, synonymous with terms such as haridra and peeta, harita etc are indicative of underlying ailments with increased Pitta. This condition is seen in diseases like include Jwara, Udara, Pandu-Kamala, Halimaka, Alasa, Arsas, Madatyaya, Gulma, among others.
The treatment approach in Ayurveda revolves around addressing the root cause. For instance, in cases like Pittaja Madatyaya, akin to alcoholic hepatitis in modern medicine, therapies involving the Drakshadi group and Padmakadi group of drugs could be recommended. Similarly, for conditions like Gara Visha, akin to drug-induced liver injury leading to jaundice, employing Nagadantyadi yoga is useful, since jaundice is also a symptom in this chapter dealing with slow exotoxins.
In cases of Pandu for example in diseases like conjugated hyperbilirubinemia, treatments focus with therapies with the Aragwadhadhi group. Similarly, for conditions like Kamala, for example in patients with hypoalbuminemia associated with jaundice, treatments employing drugs from groups like Nyagrodhadi are recommended. This topic is extensive, so I'll conclude here.
This is just very little or very brief overview demonstrating how Ayurvedic treatment strategies are tailored to address specific underlying conditions associated with jaundice, emphasizing identifying and remedying the root cause.
