Rough was actually the birthplace of idol's doing 2X speed dance. It was on episode 236 of Weekly Idol, when a caller mentioned their knife-like choreography and asked them to try dancing at twice the speed. So they nailed it and the video got a couple million views (which was big for weekly idol). Thus, the 2X speed dance became a regular ever since. When they came back with Navillera, weekly idol hosts had them do both Glass Bead and Me Gustas Tu back to back at 2X before doing Navillera. So they did 3 songs in a row at 2X.

So here you got to the gold era for Gfriend until now. Rough is arguably the most successful song for Gfriend and, as you can see, it's no accident. Someone said that this is a rare case where the music, lyrics, choreo and MV all came together to produce a rare gem. Rough is the concluding episode of Gfriend's school trilogy, but unlike the earlier two songs where exudes youthful energy and excitement, Rough included elements of sentimentality and nostalgia as the girls were seemingly moving on to an uncertain future after graduation from school. About their choreo, I thought you nailed it with your comment. It's a mixture of strength and grace. It's beautiful to see how coordinated they were in flowing through the choreo with precision and elegance. And the dance is highly interpretative of the message of the song. The whole thing feels like an art work. Yuju recently reminisced recently on how pressed they were during this period from their work. They paid the price and produced a truly lasting piece for us to enjoy. As for the music, the heavy presence of instrumental, particularly strings and of course the guitar, fits the song so beautifully. Navillera is such an amazing follow-up to Rough. It's retro and pop-rock like melody is energetic and fun-filled, delivering a nostalgic backlook to our own youthful past. You can already tell that Gfriend was making gradual progress in expanding their original sound. To me, the guitar solo is absolutely iconic in connecting the song to our memory in the 90s'. By this song, the Gfriend's synchronized choreo and its group's vocal (particularly Yuju's belting) became a staple for the girls. Want to echo your sentiment about how satisfying it is to listen to Gfriend's song. I listen to them all the time for the sense of joy, warmth, and fellowship I get from their music. I couldn't get tired of listening to them. While the Gfriend lore has become a thing for the group, up until now, I think you are perfectly in touch with their career growth without overworking yourself with it. Their next title track is Fingertip, this is, in my opinion, where the story-telling started to take a more prominent part in their MV and the projection of their lore. Rough and Naverilla were the songs that really helped solidify Gfriend as a force to be reckoned with. Rough was one of the longest charting songs and most viewed MVs of the year in 2016. It also got Gfriend their first Korean music show Win and that later went on to win 15 times total, making it the 2nd most wins for a girl group on a single song, then they repeated that success with Naverilla which won 14 times. With 29 wins on 2 songs, they had the most wins in 2016. Plus they popularized the 2Xs fast dance trend during the time that many many groups still do today.

Navillera is such a fun song. If you're looking for silly GFriend stuff to watch, I'd recommend "new gfriend stans here's what you missed" and "gfriend's vlogs are a mess" by leadersowon! Rough won 15 times on music shows and Navillera won 14 times so in total for 2016 they won 29 times with only 2 songs which is a record! I also happened to watch your Dumdi Dumdi reaction video and found out your bias was Soojin, funny thing is that SinB is friends with Soojin 🥺 they became friends at some point this year because SinB’s friend, WJSN’s Eunseo wanted to be friends with Soojin then they became friends so Eunseo introduced them (because SinB introduced Eunseo to her friend Suji). SinB posted her listening to Dumdi Dumdi on her Instagram story tagging idle with 2 hearts🥺 Soojin mentioned SinB on her vlive calling her by her first name saying how pretty she looked at the table scene specifically. And that’s on main dancers 🤩 But anyways next should be Fingertip and Love Whisper, also amazing songs. These 2 have a big impact on the storyline! Sadly, Navillera doesn’t have a dance practice other than this (I’m glad you used this one though since the one people usually use is the mirrored video and it kinda trips me out lmao). If Me Gustas Tu could be considered a freak accident that got popular because of a random viral hit, then Rough would be a carefully crafted work made to win awards. Everything about Rough is stellar, but the most important aspect of it as a work is its ability to resonate with the public. The MV and lyrics together create a sense of wistfulness that everyone can understand. The wish to "run through time" to be with one's loved ones is an almost universal desire as is the desire to reunite with one's friends and family after a parting. Indeed, as award shows rely on votes, this was key to Rough's massive success, becoming the girl group song with the second-most wins. Navillera, as with most Gfriend's summer releases, was an experiment. In many ways, it is musically similar to Rough. It is more bombastic and fun compared to the latter, but both are well-regarded as among the best in Gfriend's discography. However, Navillera is interesting for its retro concept. This ties into the motif of time started in Rough while beginning Gfriend's other motif of butterflies, as Navillera is Korean for butterfly or at least a variation of the word. I'd say Gfriend's storyline starts here, though all would agree that the next song Fingertip is easily the most story-focused of Gfriend's songs up to that point. Together, Rough and Navillera form Gfriend's golden year. This is the height of Gfriend's popularity, and everything after is always compared to this era. It is unfortunate that Gfriend does not have the concept nor the sound that would be easily popular in the west and thus regain their incredible popularity during this time, but I do prefer the uniqueness of Gfriend that bucks industry trends in favor of older sounds and concepts. Side note: I would recommend that Love Whisper and Summer Rain be listened to together. They are clear parallels that have very similar chord progressions, and the time between the two releases was easily the shortest of all Gfriend songs.

Sometimes, I feeling odd to see complex and detailed things like this coming from unpopular agencies/group. It seems they are very dedicated to working comprehensively and very aesthetic, in terms of music arrangement, choreography, MV, vocals, etc. Gfriend is my first kpop group that really caught my attention.

To the storyline until now. It's pretty obvious that Glass Bead, Me Gustas Tu and Rough are about school girls and their friendship. Now to Navillera. If you noticed there is a lot of envy going on here. Nobody helped nobody but Yerin helped Eunha and they kinda fell in love xD But the main part here is envy (it's also in the lyrics) but why are they envy? You will find out soon but it's not that obvious.. after you are done with alle the MVs I would recommend Glass Bead: Previous story and Glass Bead: Butterfly effect. The first one is from debut until Crossraods and the 2nd Crossraods and Apple. :) both are btw from Eunha's view.

I had the same experience as you, I started listening to GFriend a couple of months ago when I heard they were doing a comeback and at first I wasn't sure if it was gonna be my cup of tea, but my god they quickly became one of my favorite artists and not just in terms of k-pop. I know you don't know this since you haven't seen navillera before. But sinb is such a great dancer during one of the navillera dance shows she actually dislocated her arm or did something really bad to her arm once she got off stage she looked really uncomfortable and it made me so sad. But yerin sinb (and personally Sowon) are such good dancers and it's just everything. ( Ever since fingertip which is your next comeback. I personally think Sowon is a lead with yerin even though it isn't official Sowon joined Gfriend as a rapper and dancer stated in idol room- I personally put Sowon and yerin in lead dance together. ) Before you watch finger tip you should watch some dance stages or maybe some 2x of the songs you do know like glass bead mgt rough navillera.

Very refreshing to watch reactions that are not “over the top”. The way you described GFriend is just perfect and inciteful. I came to them from Dreamcatcher ( they are my fav) and I see GFriend as their alter-ego. The first time I heard Apple I almost dismissed GFriend for being too “mellow” but then I listened a few more times and was completely hooked. GFriend are such a comforting listen.
