Notice how at 2:51 when that man enters the railway station and hears Finlandia performed he immediately takes his hat off
@Jantzku

Probably not just because of that. It's customary to not have hats inside

Men never wear a hat indoors, only women. A hard hat of course is an exception to this.

That is the etiquette indeed, but not the reality: just rewatched a 10s section of the video and at least a dozen men were wearing a hat inside, including some of the singers@@laakeri84

My brother was one of singers there 😀and yes, it is the main railway station in Helsinki. The singers were from several choirs, mainly student choirs afaik. I’ve performed this song countless times, all over the world. Usually gets good reception when we sing it in a restaurant while having dinner 😂and hearing it always brings a tear in my eye

The performers said that they were astonished how well this train station built in the early 1900s was designed acoustically, because the hall resonated just perfectly.

This is still the best version of Finlandia I've heard. Sung with so much feeling, but still accurately, with good technique. And the acoustics are great, wouldn't guess that a railway station works that well for performing.

I like how the gentleman at 2:50 takes his hat off instantly when coming out of the store. It's considered as a good behavior in Finland to take your hat off when in inside or when eating at table.

Around five percent of Finns sing in choirs, so it's pretty popular hobby. Finlandia itself was written before Finland's independence during a period of Russification. Those lyrics they sang were added to the piece after Winter War, and the building they performed was bombed during the war, so there's a lot of history and emotion in that performance. Here's Sibelius' Christmas hymn 'Give Me Neither Power Nor Splendour': "15/19: En etsi valtaa, loistoa (Jean Sibelius) [Advent Concert 2013]".

Yes, indeed, that's the best Xmas hymn ever, both as the message and melody, by two Finnish giants - Topelius and Sibelius, represented in the official hymn/coral book of the Finnish Lutheran Church.

My favourite Christmas hymn! The original Swedish lyrics are also typically humble as befits a Nordic country like Finland. They are from a Yuletide psalm of 1887 by Zacharias Topelius. It was set to music in 1895 by the then 30-year-old Jean Sibelius. The Finnish version was first made public in 1909.

I actually watch that video every now and then, just because it is so beautiful and powerful at the same time. No matter what kind of state of mind I am in, whenever I hear this I get goosebumps and tears in my eyes and it just makes me so proud. I cannot sing Finlandia myself, because when singing along I get so emotional every time, that I simply cannot make it through. At the latest in the "kuin itse taivahan kansi sois" my voice just crumbles and I start crying. Might sound weird, but this combination of the beautiful melody and the words that carry so much meaning, it just activates something very deep in my heart.

Finlandia Finland, behold, thy daylight now is dawning, the threat of night has now been driven away. The skylark calls across the light of morning, the blue of heaven lets it have its sound, and now the day the powers of night is scorning: thy daylight dawns, O Finland of ours! Finland, arise, and raise towards the highest thy head now crowned with mighty memory. Finland, arise, for to the world thou criest that thou hast thrown off thy slavery, beneath oppression's yoke thou never liest. Thy morning's come, O Finland of ours!

This is a song with intention to unite Finland and celebrate that Finns are finally freed from slavery . I really don’t like that some people have hijacked it and made it about peace or religion. Yes , sure it is about peace, but it’s so personal. Every time I hear This song I cry because my parents, , my relatives and all finnish people fought so hard in the war War and oppression affects people, for generations Love Finland , the strongest , hard working , smartest, Loving people in the world , SISU Forever !❤

One special version of the hymn of Finlandia is the version that the oldest choir in Finland, Akademiska Sångföreningen, perfomed as it turned 185 years this year. For me personally it was very special as my 97 years old father sings in the anniversary choir together with all his four sons. This same choir also sang our national anthem the first time in 1848 as the choir was only 10 years of age. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ntR3iteLnLfHnWg.html

Most of them where pro chore guys, but there where few guys who just did know the song from school etc and joined in... Like if something like that would happen and I would be there, I would join to it, mostly bebacause I think Finlandia hymn is great song AND it should be our national hymn! As current one is basicly German tavern song picked up from Estonia by drunken Swedish students 200 years ago... At least Finlandia is made by Finnish for the Finnish....

Ah. I do not know if you are aware that there is strong historical connection between Finland and Ireland. Irish copy some NOT so nice part of our battle toward independecy. I mean terrorism and other violence against political opponents. Irish were inspired about some Finnish steam head independency folk whom commit murders and bomb strikes against their real and imaginary opponents. It is OK to like your country but nationlism and patriotism is very problematic ideology too. But Finlandia is nice piece and I recommend to study Sibelius other composings too, 5th symphony is amazing.
@digitalspecter
@digitalspecter 5 ай бұрын
I think there's a subtle but important difference between nationalism and patriotism. Patriotism means you are proud of your country and wish well for it and its inhabitants (inclusive).. I don't see much wrong with that. Nationalism, on the other hand, brings in the hierarchy where one's own country is seen as above others and usually the "original inhabitants" whatever they are deemed to be are seen as superior to others (exclusive). That brings a whole lot of problems.
