Every once in a great while, unknown and unexplained forces line up in the universe that creates something we call magic. Things we don't understand are magical to us, and that's what happened when these four guys intersected. A mystical power greater than four was born...

Well said and so true. It seems corny or silly to speak about a band in this way but when you really sit down and listen, and watch, LZ it makes sense. I think so many people forget or don't know cuz they have been around for so long. Either, for those of us who have listened to them our entire lives, become a part of us and what we're hear or to those that never heard, are used to auto tune and the bar has been set so low to what is considered "great" in today's music. I still get blown away when I sit and honestly listen to what these 4 did. There really and truly never will be another band at this level. Period. Listen to these two songs....its not a bit if rock music, it's an orchestrated piece of art performed by 4 musicians.

Jimmy Page was still underrated for a good number of years. During the Satriani era, people assumed him to be a "more technical" guitarist, but he's not. I went to a great number of Led Zeppelin concerts, and I met Jimmy Page. One day, when I was back stage, I heard incredible jazz guitar playing coming from his star room. The door was cracked open a little. It was Jimmy Page. How I got privy to this is a long story, but Mr. Page actually had made a specific back stage pass for me. Had he wanted to do it, he could've played Satriani Guitar. Yes! He could have. Go watch Big Jim Sullivan plays Jazz. Jimmy and Big Jim were the closest of friends, and the frequently had long engaging guitar sessions together. JAZZ standards. Also, there were a few times, usually after most people were intoxicated, JPJ would bring out the stand up bass, and Jimmy Page would start playing Jazz Fusion that sounded as good as what Scott Henderson did, "look up Elvis at the Hop." Jimmy could do it all, and I still think that he should be ranked as being the number one best classic rock guitarist in history, and definitely, in reality, if the truth was known, in all genres, he was among the best of them too.

i wonder how robert feels finishing a allison krauss concert...does he feel the same way as completing an LZ concert?...also, i have heard he sings 2 or 3 LZ songs during the plant/krauss concerts...i will bet the audience has a 10 fold greater reaction compared to a original plant/krauss song...my comment is in the highest regard to allison krauss..its just that LZ somehow embedded themselves into the psyche of millions of fans...LZ songs essentially were life experiences to the listener thus life lessons

There were other bands from the '70's with impressive live shows e.g. Pink Floyd and Queen, but Zeppelin played at this level every night for 3 1/2 hours, and like many other Zep fans I think the live performances have to be taken as completely different entities from the studio releases. This band was so dynamic, so inventive that comparisons are really apples and oranges. Believe it or not the band considered this concert as only mediocre. One song that you should check out from this movie is "Whole Lotta Love" which closes out the show. In contrast to these two songs "Whole Lotta Love" is playful and loose and riotous. I think you'd enjoy it. You should do yourself a favor and sit down and watch the entire film "The Song Remains the Same". The film itself is OK. The cinematography is only adequate, but Zeppelin's performance, as you've seen, is astounding.

Jimmy Page was a master in the studio and live. How he could distill down a song like this - that had a half-dozen (or more) guitar parts to a live version with just his single performance is amazing. His double-neck guitar gave him the ability to use the lush 12-string for some of the song, and lower 6-string neck for the more straight-ahead sounds.

To me - I love both versions. The studio version is masterful. The guitar solos are better, there are acoustic and electric guitars. Everything is balanced perfectly. Turn it up and listen again. The live version has tons of energy and is also masterfully played. They're very different from each other. Both are equally a must listen.

Was fortunate to see Led live when I was young. It was Bonham's birthday and they were an hour late starting. When they did start there was no introduction. The lights simply dimmed and then Jimmy Pages guitar started up with " The Song Remains The Same ", then they blended into " The Rain Song ". Two songs so diametrically opposite, and such a perfect example of what made them so great! An experience I will never forget!

You're finally catching on. Live versions are ALWAYS better with Led Zeppelin, only because they are REAL talents. They don't fail because they are only good in the studio, with remixes to get it perfect. When you think the studio version is better, is because of sound quality with perfect acoustics. But the live versions gives them freedom to embellish.

Looking back now, I feel so blessed being a teenager when this concert happened and as they ruled the radiowaves, concert halls, dance halls, bars and anywhere music played during the entire decade of the 70s. With LZ Jimmy always said that the studio was just the beginning and in a stage performance they could take any song in whatever direction they felt like on any given night and as a foursome they were always aware of each other and could improvise at any given moment giving the band a fresh performance rather the SOS plus the audience never got the same show in consecutive performance’s.

Back in 78 I lived in the Netherlands and hash was legal to smoke. This song was played in some dark bar and we would along with other kids from my high school class would just be high as kite listening to this. In 79 moved back to so cal and never got high again lol. This brings back those memories.

when they had a good night onstage, they were untouchable as four seperate entities become one.

I read somewhere that if Jimmy does a riff at beginning of the song, you know it's going to be great. I've had no reason to argue. Just wait til he starts to drool.

The only possible comparison is to Jimmy's prior group, The Yardbirds... which became The New Yardbirds... which in turn became Led Zeppelin. More distantly: Cream (circa Spoonful) and Humble Pie both had their moments. Bon Scott- era AC/ DC. Peace from Canada.
