There's just one mistake you can make with Home Free -- listening to "Mayday" too soon. In order to get maximum enjoyment from that performance, you must know all the members and their voices really well. That will take 5 or 6 of their newer songs that include solos by Chance, the newest member of the group. (He's the one who contributed the jaw harp to MOCS, but you don't hear him sing.) Other songs that feature Chance include "Some Girls Do" and "The Gambler." He hits a home run with "Cover Me Up" (and sings great, too!) "American Pie" is a good overall choice because it has solos by Chance and all the other members (except Adam, the beatboxer.) This performance is done together with Don McLean, the original artist. For a man who is now 75, Don does a GREAT job...and he "fits" perfectly with Home Free. Rob, the second tenor you heard in MOCS, does a great job with "End of the Road" and Austin (the high tenor) did the best version of "When a Man Loves a Woman" that anyone has recorded since Percy Sledge wrote the song in 1966.
@chrisd7047

The Sea Shanty Medley also showcases Chance's voice well, as does their collab with Peter Hollens on I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. Oh! And their cover of Folsom Prison Blues. In my head I refer to Rob as "The Reverend Rob Lundquist" because the man can PREACH when he sings.

Excellent reaction. This band has a very large catalog so I suggest you continue with reactions and bypass reviews, btw. As far as song selections, I suggest you you check out the following to get a quick sense of their intricate arrangements, harmonizing, humor, and vocal ranges: How Great Thou Art, Do You Hear What I Hear, Helplessly Hoping, When A Man Loves A Woman, End of The Road, Cover Me Up, Mayday, and Butts Remix. The first lead tenor is Austin Brown and he is from Georgia. You need to check out his solo offerings as well. The bass, Tim Foust is from east Texas, and has a 5 octave range, the second lead tenor is Rob Lundquist and is from Minnesota, as well as the beatboxer, Adam Rupp, who cofounded HF 20 years ago in college, with his brother Chris, who left the band in 2016. He was replaced by Adam Chance, who goes by Chance, is a baritone/bass with a 4 octave range, and he was born in Florida, but grew up in Alabama. Their fans are call Home Fries, and I think you just became one yourself.

Home Free has a ton of videos out on their channel. Not a single one is bad. Their older stuff was under a Sony label, and Sony is very quick with copyright strikes. Their newer stuff -- anything off the Dive Bar Saints or Warmest Winter albums or the more recent stuff recorded in quarantine -- is under their own label and will not have those problems. There are also a bunch of videos of live shows, which should also not be an issue. They love reactors. This past year+ in quarantine they've put out a music video every other Friday like clockwork, recorded in their individual homes (or nearby) and then put together by their incredible team. It's been amazing to see what they can do. The members, starting at the top of the musical scale and going down, are: 1) Austin Brown, high tenor, Georgia boy now living in Nashville. He was the first singer in this video. He has classical music training, so he can drop the accent when he needs to. He's written several HF songs. He has his own channel for his solo projects which is worth checking out as well. (No, he's not planning to leave and go out in his own. He's written more music than Home Free can use, so they've encouraged him to do some independent stuff as well.) 2) Rob Lundquist, lead tenor, from and still living in Minnesota. He's the bushy bearded guy with the smooth voice. Doesn't have any musical side projects that I'm aware of, but has a really fun movie podcast called "The Avid Indoorsmen" with longtime friend Eric "Buegs" Buegler, who can be seen in a few HF videos. 3a) Chris Rupp, baritone, brother of Adam, and founder of the group. He's not in this video, but was in "Ring of Fire". He left in 2016 to pursue other interests. Usually wearing a cowboy hat in their vids. He has his own channel where as well as his current independent projects he has some collaborations with Tim Foust (well worth checking out) and also posted some behind the scenes stuff from his HF years. Oh, and he has hair now, so he looks very different. 3b) Adam Chance (just called Chance to distinguish him from Adam Rupp), bass-baritone, from Alabama, currently living in LA. He was brought in to replace Chris. Before HF he was the bass in Street Corner Symphony, another a cappella group. He's the one doing the mouth harp sound in this video. He's got a great smoky voice featured in a number of songs and has arranged and produced some awesome videos of theirs. He just recently started posting songs to his own channel. He's also done some collaborations with The Hound + The Fox (I'd especially recommend their cover of "Hurt"). 4) Tim Foust, bass with a remarkable range, from Texas now living in Nashville. He had a struggling solo career before he joined HF. His earlier work, as well as his collaborations with Peter Hollens (Someone's sure to mention Misty Mountains which is well worth a watch for the amazing vocal layering and the mind-blowing bass), Chris Rupp, and The Hound + The Fox are all worth checking out. There are also a lot of videos of him telling stories at HF concerts, visiting various localities, and trying out food. He's also written a number of HF songs. 5) Adam Rupp, beatboxer, tenor when he sings, HF founder with his brother Chris, from and still living in Minnesota. He's self-taught as far as beatboxing goes, but has a degree in musical performance with an emphasis on trumpet. There's not a whole lot of there apart from HF videos of him, but there are several fan videos of his "drum solo" live from their concerts. One of the most layered and complex a cappella arrangements I've ever heard is his arrangement for Home Free of "Do You Hear What I Hear?" As far as HF songs I'd recommend, I'd say any of them with two exceptions -- Mayday and Snowglobe. Both are awesome, but wait to watch them till you have seen a few other HF songs & have a better idea of what parts the guys usually sing. They mix it up in these songs, so they're better appreciated with a bit of experience. One more thing, you're going to get inundated by Home Fries (HF fans) and their requests. Don't get overwhelmed, and take things at your own pace. There's a lot of HF material out there with more showing up all the time, but it will be there when you get to it.

Succinctly put. I agree with all of this. I've not heard a song or cover I don't like. Amazing group with no egos...everyone gets to shine. I totally agree about 'May Day' & 'Snow Globe' Leave them until you've watched a fair few others. Do you hear what I hear, and Your Man will give you more of Tim's Bass. End of the Road (Boys II Men) shows their range (not country) I'd love a review of Ring of Fire

When they do this song live, Austin (power tenor) and Adam (beatboxer) do a (fake)harmonica duet and that is Chance (baritone) doing the jaw harp at the beginning and end. Everyone is AMAZING in this group, and for a TRULY jaw dropping surprise, do Mayday. Not until you have watched enough of their other videos to know who they are, and what parts they normally sing, first. For kicks, check out one of Adam Rupp's Drum Solos. Home Free is an amazing “a cappella” band. In Ring of Fire Tim hit a G#1 with the last note. They were on the NBC show the Sing Off and won in 2013 the year after Pentatonix won. On that show they sang Ring of Fire and Tim went lower. You can look up the video. Three of the boys are from the south and two from Minnesota. Austin is the lead in this song, he’s the high tenor and is from Georgia. Rob is a tenor (with glasses) and is from MN. Tim is the bass and is from Texas. Chance who was doing the mouth harp is from Alabama. Adam the beatboxer is from MN. During concerts Chance will do the mouth harp into a looper as he says it hurts his voice to do it too long. All the boys can do some beatboxing. They are all tremendous singers. They sing country but they sing all genres of music. They have collaborated with Kenny Rogers, Oak Ridge boys, Lee Greenwood, Don McLean and Alabama. They also have a great sense of humor and aren’t afraid to be goofy. Try Helplessly Hoping, How Great Thou Art, Country Roads, End of the Road to hear great harmonies. Tim the bass also has a 5 octave range and so can sing tenor to bass and everything in between. Loved your reaction.

So, having seen them several times live, there are 3 members of this group who can sing low enough to vibrate the theater or arena: Tim (the bass--white shirt here), Chance (the baritone and former bass in previous group--in the back left here), and Adam (the beatboxer). Go back and refresh your memory by listening to "Ring of Fire" again; it's always fun. I'd suggest watching Adam Rupp's solo (there are a couple up here on KZfaq) since you like rock/metal music. They are impressive. Good job for recognizing that it was a "fake" harmonica. For some patriotic stuff, I'd suggest "God Bless the USA" by the USAF Singing Sergeants featuring Home Free (this is a song that Home Free sings at a lot of their concerts for the past 20 years or so and this updated version is fantastic). For some romantic music, "When a Man Loves a Woman." For a mix of country and pop and rap and rock, "Butts Remix" and "Country-Fried Pop Medley." Both of these are with their former baritone and original group member, Chris Rupp, brother of the beatboxer. For some doo-wop, "Blue Ain't Your Color" and they are working on some sweet dance moves. For Home Free. Kind of. LOL. For some just stand-around-and-sing fun, try "My Church." Really, just pick stuff and react. None of it's bad. I second the other subscribers that said Home Free has a wonderful sense of humor and it shows in their videos. Their concerts are hilarious. Welcome to the Home Free rabbit hole.

As I like to split the hair, Adam Rupp is a tenor and cannot sing very low. As a beatboxer he can do throat bass, and that is the rumbling sound we hear in some of the songs and in his beatbox solo. Throat bass is done with the false vocal chords, and not many beatboxers can do it.

Austin is the first tenor that sang in this song and he's from somewhere in the south, I don't remember where though. Rob is the second tenor, from Minnesota. Tim is the bass who makes your brain melt, and he's from Texas. Chance is the baritone and he was doing a lot of the overtone singing. And Adam is the beatboxer, we also call him the man who swallowed a drum set, and he's only gotten better since covid hit. Adam is from Minnesota as well, and I don't know where Chance is from.

Just my homemade cheat sheet I’ve accumulated so far... as sort of Cheat sheet. Home Free is a country a cappella group but they don’t stay in their assigned genre. They do all cover songs across the board. Their fan base call themselves Home Fries. Tim Foust (bass) can go as low as G1, not found on the standard keyboard. Some say his low notes are quite emasculating. Has, in fact, blown speakers (there’s a video out there of it). It’s notable, that despite his fame, he’s very humble (see the video of him receiving an award - hall of fame recognition). Adam Rupp, the beat boxer (yes that’s a harmonica sound he’s creating without the instrument) has won at least two awards (that I’m aware of) for in beat boxing. He is said to eat drum kits for breakfast and can be quite trying when on long bus tours. He is also the brother of Chris Rupp (not in this video but earlier ones - left to pursue his own career). Austin Brown, lead tenor, can hit some high notes (see When a Man Loves a Woman). He’s got that odd quirkiness to him and has a cat named Dawg (don’t know why that’s important to add). He also wrote an original Christmas song (so over due for one of them) called “Cold Hard Cash.” It showcases his comedic and writing skills. Rob Lundquist (glasses and beard), from my state of Minnesota, has two kids and is considered the lower tenor (Austin being the higher tenor). He does a great job with Sir Mix-a-lot, he’s also the grounding and all around force for the group (because there’s no idea just how out of control and quirkiness the group would be with Austin, Tim and Adam running wild). He also reminds me of Bobby Singer, a character from the t.v. show Supernatural, when he wears his red and black flannel. (Adam) Chance, called Chance so not to be confused with the drum kit (Adam Rupp), is the one making the Jew harp in the background. He’s the newest member, replacing Chris Rupp. More recent videos have him featured as lead singer (see Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison”). He’s is actually a bass but sings bass-baritone in the group. The best things that make this a cappella group stand out is that they seem to have so much fun in making videos, they’re versatile, and no one member is always center stage (they share the spot light - though Austin can seem over hyper comedic with flamboyant exaggeration {which we all love him for it}).

A fun one with the bass Tim is that he has to self limit what he can do on studio recordings due to not wanting to pay for replacements on expensive equipment. To get the full effect you have to see him live. If you want a video where Tim plays around with some more bass notes look for the Peter Hollens Misty Mountains featuring Tim Foust.

Austin, Tim and Chance (cowboy-hatted tenor, bass and baritone) are from the South (Austin is from Georgia, Tim is from Texas and Chance is from Alabama.) Adam and Rob (second, bearded tenor and beatboxer) are both from Minnesota. Home Free is another awesome band, well worth diving into; they excel at both spiritual, emotional songs and laugh-out-loud numbers. And yes, Tim's bass can also go crazy low - like, speaker-destroying low. He also (like Geoff Castellucci of Voiceplay) has a five-octave range. (I've added my 'likes' to already-listed songs in the comments, as suggested.)

Great reaction man. The first tenor is Austin. The 2nd tenor is Rob. The bass (who can go pretty high as well) is Tim. The beat boxer is Adam Rupp (Look for the vids on YT called Adam Rupp drum solo). Wow!!! The last guy we see at the end is Adam Chance (he goes by Chance to avoid confusion with the other Adam). He is the baritone in this group but was the bass in his last group. He is also the guy doing the "Jews Harp" sound throughout this piece. I think all of the guys can beatbox when Adam has too much going on, Austin (1st tenor) often joins Adam on "harmonica" during live shows. Definitely check out Adam's drum solo. I swear it sounds like he is doing 3 sounds at once and the solo vids are recorded live in front of an audience. Also a note for background, the founding member of this group was Chris Rupp (beatboxers brother) He was inthe Ring of fire video (cowboy hat). He has since gone on to other pursuits and he recommended Chance to replace him. Enjoy!!!!

That's okay, there's plenty you haven't seen yet. Adam Chance did the Jaw Harp using harmonic overtones (aka Tibetan throat singing, like the Hu), which I'm guessing it had to be layered or looped since it is kind of hard to do for very long and besides he had a baritone part to sing. Chance didn't show in lead on this song, but he gets a really nice lead on the remake of American Pie, which was requested and joined by Don McLean. You may like the John Denver song "Take Me Home Country Roads" also. "Moonshine" is a lot of fun. "Butts Remix" is ridiculous. "God Bless The USA" is a whole event. "Do You Hear What I Hear" is a great Christmas song. "My Church" has a good traditional country feel. "Dive Bar Saints" is an original contemporary country song, I think. You should try "May Day", but only after hearing 3 or 4 of the more classic Home Free songs. It's tricky to appreciate what they are doing differently on that one unless you've gotten familiar with their ranges and usual parts.

You are correct, they use a looper to record Chance’s jaw harp and some of Adam’s percussion parts. In concert they use a live looping station for this song, which is cool to see.

The first tenor, their high tenor, is Austin Brown, from southern Georgia. Rob Lundquist, the 2nd tenor is referred to as the man with the voice of an angel and hails from Minnesota. The bass man is Tim Foust, from Southeast Texas, and he has a solid 5 octave range, I actually caught his bass vibration on video you can see. The beat boxer is Adam Rupp and one of the original founding members out of Minnesota. you will be in awe of his talent the more you watch. Last but not least is Adam Chance, referred to as Chance, grew up in southern Alabama He is a true bass but sings baritone with Home Free. He steps up to bass when Tim is lead singer in a song. Didn't hear much from Chance except the mouth harp but he has a voice as smooth as a well aged whiskey.
