Jose is a member of Rockapella, the OG acapella group from back in the 80s-90s that are still active. Geoff Castellucci is the bass, Eli Jacobson is the bald guy tenor; J None , black guy, baritone; Layne Stein is the vocal percussionist, he also sings tenor. J and Layne are also both very good violinists, I highly recommend checking out their cover of Warriors by Imagine Dragons, you get not just their amazing acapella harmony in that one but also Layne and J on violins, it's pretty awesome.

Eli (bald guy) is the tenor, is pronounced Elly, as in belly. Layne (far right) is the beatboxer, also sings baritone, plays violin and arranges a lot of their songs. Geoff (bass) pronounced Jeff, sings anything from bass to tenor, he has a 5 octave range, and also arranges a lot of their songs. J.None (black guy) is a baritone and also plays violin. several of the members also can rap, several can do some beatboxing, and they all have ranges way past their "label". Earl was the high tenor of the group that left, so they are now only 4 members.

I'd definetly recommend Geoff Castellucis solo work! By the way, the backgrounds are meant to keep the original viking style of the song. When i remember correctly, Eli made them on his own in unreal engine, a video game programming software. I think thats pretty cool to know.

Geoff Castellucci can explore and showcase multiple techniques like subharmonic, growls, inhale notes and probably more. Geoff the master of subharmonic undertones. Out of the three I'm mentioning, Geoff plays with voice the most due to the sheer number of bass covers he makes. It feels like he's pumping out videos 2x a week or more. Tim Foust from master of 1st octave growls and chest notes. Literally causes speakers to spontaneously combust and fan cams of live events shake the phones and distort audio and visual recordings. Even without mic and no amplification he can still make many people feel slightly uncomfortable because those frequencies trigger a fight or flight response. Avi Kaplan has the thickest fattest vocal folds. Everything he says or sings is a physical assualt of my ears and brain. Also master of overtones. True bass that can sing 6th and 7th octave notes on top of a flat bass note. It's dark magic.

The other member was J.None, not Earl. Earl was the big guy with the beard in Oogie Boogie, he left the group last summer. You'll see him if you look at their older stuff. J is their baritone in this. He joined several years ago. If you look further back though, you might see Tony, who was before J. Tony left to start his own production company, which he runs with Layne, and VP has filmed several videos at their studio. Eli is their tenor (name is pronounced Ellie), and he has a killer rock voice. He also does crazy character voices, where you can't even tell it's him. He voiced Santa in Oogie Boogie, in fact. As for the video, I argue that it adds a theatrical element that is one of the best parts of VP. They have theater backgrounds and they like putting on shows. (They worked for Disney in Orlando.) This song was from a video game and it was as if they were characters in a video game. Or Norse gods/warriors. If I wanted to focus on vocals only, I could just listen to the song, not watch the video. Considering they do all their own arranging, filming, directing, etc., I think it's awesome when they go all out.

Earl left the group. Jose Rosario was the guest singer (tenor) that replaced him in this song. Jose is currently with Rocapella. The song is from an Assassin's Creed game Vikings period recently released and may be based on an old Icelandic song, hence the stomping and clapping. Jose was the man in the brown robes with the hood. The costumes and backgrounds reflect the travels of the Vikings, esp. Goeff's with the burning building behind him and J None's with the open fjord (listen closely and hear the sea). I am reminded of the movie, The 13th Warrior when I hear this.

Over the last few years, since a cappella became more than just barbershop, I have come to appreciate what depth voices can bring to a performance. There are 3 groups who currently, although different in style, produce their own interpretation of a cappella that lift the genre to the heights. Voice play is one of them. They have to be the consummate professionals in timing and vocal performance, because they have no traditional instruments to cover any mistakes. Voice Play, in this song brings a depth of color and context to a simple Viking poem and wring every ounce of harmony out of the range of possibilities. Beautiful and precise delivery and chillingly gratifying result. Loved your reaction!

Not going to lie, the way you reacted to Geoff's bass drop at the start there is just about what my reaction to it was, even as familiar with his bass drops as I am. Hands down, you need to watch Geoff's solo cover of 16 tons next. Like, if you love that bass energy he has, that is one of the best videos that he's done to really showcase his power (and range). But, I've also got to plug for Jonathan Young as well. He's got a lot of great work, but a good starting point is Hellfire or the Bells of Notre Dame. Though, heck, even his cover of In the Dark of the Night is great XD

Me, I liked the costumes. Didn't need a lot of action in the video, but I like that they acted and dressed for the part. Particularly Eli had makeup and movements that were really effective. There's something about a man singing high, but with power and grit in his voice. He was fierce. (Eli's my fave among VP. BTW, his name is pronounced ELL-ee, not EE-lie as you would expect. I think his formal name is Eliezer, so that explains the pronunciation.)

@@Trickpants Actually it predates both by several centuries. The verses comes from Egil's Saga which spans the years c. 850-1000. It was included in the Poetic Edda by Snorri Sturluson who was writing in the 13th century. There is some debate as to whether Snorri wrote it himself or was passing on an older tale that predates his writing. Not entirely sure how old the tune is though.

Took me a while to wrap my mind around the more modern arrangement with the many key changes. It was good but personally, I don't think it worked as well as most of their other arrangements but they set the bar really, really high with previous projects. One arrangement of theirs that doesn't seem to get a lot of love on YT is their Queen Medley. Earl took lead on it before leaving the group but everybody has quite a few moments to shine. It really showcases what they can do vocally and with the narrative. Highly recommend.

Sorry dude but Earl left the group awhile back. J none, Eli, Geoff and Layne. Only 4 members. They’ve been featuring special guest singers on their videos.
