Aussie states are huge . Western Australia is about 4 × Texas or 1.7 × Alaska. Of our 6 states 2 of them are bigger than Alaska and 4 of them bigger than Texas . We're pretty big down under.

Each state of Australia has its own characteristics. As the colonies expanded out from Sydney, they were settled at different times and in different climates so they formed different habits. Queenslanders growing up in the tropics and sub-tropics are different to temperate climate Victorians and Tasmanians. South Australians are just psychopaths but they do make some nice wine. It has become more 'homogenised' with people moving between states quite readily for jobs or retirement.

Well, every state has its own flavour, so to speak and Tasmanians have two heads, although many will have one surgically removed, especially if they've moved to the mainland.

I've lived in every state in Australia except Tassy and SA but have also lived in the NT and ACT. Never really been interested in living in Tassy and SA is only a place you pass through when going from one place to another, like driving from Darwin to Perth during the Wet (Green) season, when the West Coast Highway is closed due to flooding or getting from the East coast to the West coast or vice versa.

As for differences between states, I would say the Aussie accent of Queensland tend to be broader than elsewhere but more so if you go inland. Queenslanders tend to talk with their mouths semi closed ( to keep the flys out in summer ). Folk in Adelaide in South Australia tend to talk slightly posher, however Melbourne and Sydney folk tend not to have strong accents. Most Australians can generally understand English from any overseas tourists regardless of accents because we are widely travelled and watch both US and UK TV (because local stuff is boring to us.)

To answer your question just before the 5min mark there is actually a difference in accents between the states but maybe only us Aussies notice it but there also is different sayings and pronunciations between them with some words for example the word Balloon will sound quite different from someone born in Queensland (Ba-loo-when) compared to someone from Melbourne (Ba-loon)

We tend to take the piss out of one another in different states ie Perth is 3000 miles away from anywhere, unless you call South Australia somewhere. One of mty favourites which really gets Tasmanians going is calling Launceston in Tasmania, Inceston.

As someone who was born and raised in Ireland by comparison there is little or no difference in culture of accent between the States. Each state has a different driver's licence and car licences.

Snakes can detect heat, so standing still won’t make you not seen, however by doing so, you are not presenting a threat to them, and therefore are safer. We each love our own state and their are minor differences and slightly different accents, but our States are much more aligned than different. Laws in one state are similar to the other, fines and such are set by the states and they can differ but much more homogenous than the US

The US has states and territories, as does Australia. The main difference there is that by and large the States are larger in area than those in the US - very simply there are many fewer of them covering an overall area not that much smaller than the US. The national population is under 10% that of the US. Again, very much as in the US, the powers of the federal government are spelt out in the national Constitution but the powers of the States are not (I appreciate that that is a generalisation, but a thread such as this is not the place for legal niceties). The powers of the territories are spelt out. There is an Australian Capital Territory pretty comparable with the District of Columbia, and the Northern Territory which covers pastoral land in the central north, There are a couple of others that we need not bother about here.

Personally i think people like the idea of Australia because of our work life balance and our attitude to it. I have spoken to a lot of my American friends and they tell me that over there they 'live to work'. Everything seems to be about working and making money. What is the point of making money if you don't get to enjoy it? We work hard and we play hard because life is short and it is pretty bloody pointless if you don't get to enjoy it as much as possible.

As an Aussie I would fervently like more Danish and North European policies in place. And definitely wish we had the EU food standards. (We allow 4000 artificial food additives that are not allowed in EU food, while the USA allows 6000). Australia is more right wing and less environmentally friendly than Northern Europe. So politically and legal wise we could be a lot better. On the other hand our geographical isolation contributes greatly to the sense of safety, and therefore relaxation in Aussie culture. The housing crisis is a true crisis and politicians are treating it like a problem of supply and demand, when in reality it is a fundamental change in economics: instead of housing being either owner occupied or rental occupied as an Income generating investment Asset, housing is now further divided into two more classes taking a huge slice away from occupied housing: unregulated Air BnB short term rentals, and houses held as empty appreciating assets. Letting tenants occupy it would degrade the house’s physical condition and this resale value as an asset. Let’s see if those two problems get recified.

There are differences between the States, but I wouldn’t say they’re dramatic, it’s usually some kind of bragging right for one thing or another, but not aggressively for most people. The accents may vary slightly, the real differences in accent you might see is between the Bush and Regional places and bigger Cities. If you were to compare the risk of a Civil War in the U.S. to Australia, it’d be very unlikely to happen here, the aggro just doesn’t get to that level.

The Prime Minister is not elected by the people like the USA President. He/She is just a member of parliament elected by the people in the electorate they represent and then is elected leader of the governing party by MPs who are members of that party.

Practically there is minimal differences between people in different states, but certain things are played up. Queenslanders tend to be a bit more 'Ocker' (stereotypical Australian) in their accent and mannerisms. Sydney-siders have a quirky way of pronouncing 'oo', e.g. school is 'skiewl'. Australian food, I would call a typical meal, corn meat and veggies, sasages and vegies, breakfast bacon and eggs. But that is old school, I was born in 1955. Today Mcdonalds, Hungry Jacks, Red Rooster Chicken. Fish and chips is very common. Pizza. About one third of peoplie here were born overseas, so we have a huge variety of food. Asian, Estern, European , Indian, Around mid last century after WW 2 a lot of people from Greece came and a lot ran fish and chip shops.

Americans are obsessed about our snakes and spiders, but they all have weapons! The Big City on the West Coast is Perth, that's pretty bla clear! One day we may have more States, but for now each has its own voted government and income! The 2 Territories are controlled by Canberra! It's definitely healthier life here! Oh my, what an expert. She admits to having lived in 2 cities on the East coast and is giving advice based on her vast experience of living in ALL of Aus. The best advice she can give to her friends is "get off your backside and come and have a look, you wont be sorry - there so much to do and see" But tell them they need a lot more than a 4 week holiday, Tassie alone is going to take 3 - 6 months and then you only see half of it, bush walks, waterfalls, lakes and don't me started on the quality of the food. Every state and Territory has enough to fill in the rest of your life. And the best advice I can give another Aussie is "if you don't know what I'm talking about, then you haven't spent enough time looking at what we have. This place is fantastic, full of wonderful people. BTW it's impossible to take a bad photo in Tassie.

There are many ways the cultures can be divided. There are differences in the types of sports player/watched, the history of settlement, different aboriginal cultures, different laws and different social 'climates'. NSW tends to be very beuarocratic and is commonly referred to as a 'nanny state' meaning it holds your hand and makes rules for everything. Queenslanders on the other hand will not be told what to do, QLD is very much the Texas of AUS, horrible environmental impact, lots of mining and forestry, rebellious population, lots of rural population centres.

7:20 City Beach, which is the closest to Perth CBD (10 km) and is now the best beach in the metro area. Trigg is another good beach which up until the 80's had great surf, along with Scarborough. Before the 80's both beaches used to get regular 3 to 4 metre waves. Today you'll be lucky to find one over 1 metre. Scarborough and Cottesloe beaches are now over-rated commercial eyesores.
