This song epitomizes everything about Rush, musicianship, story telling, lyrics. Interestingly it has no chorus.

Geddy, in my humble opinions is one of the greatest musicians to grace the stage. To sing like he does, with killer base lines an playing synth foot pedals, an then switching to the keys, an playing base pedals an singing… the dude is a master!!! The band as a whole puts so much into the composition of every song, truly 3 masters… that sound like a symphony of 10

@@maximuskhan2100 totally agree… it still amazes me how quite possibly the 3 best musicians in the world came together in lil oh Canada… What’s even crazier is the whole of their story, from beginning to end, creating 40+ yrs of amazing music, lyrics, that still very few bands can hold a candle too them 🤘💪♥️

for me (being a bass player) one of the hallmarks of Rush is that the solo section is almost always shared equally between geddy & alex. to hear them both solo out in harmony or counterpoint is pretty unique in the rock world.

Rush never lets us down!! One of the few instances where Neil wrote about an 'object' (and a typical rock subject at that), but still made it meaningful, poignant & thought provoking! (see The Trees for another notable song about objects!) Highly suggest not playing this while driving - the tendency to put foot to floor and go ballistic is very real! While the visualizer really added nothing to this song, it did allow you to focus on the lyrics, and immerse in the music! Make no mistake, this is a heavy track, and it indeed absolutely rocks!! You might as well do a full-album review of Moving Pictures (of which Red Barchetta is but one track of seven on) - it's full of complete perfection!

This is my fav from MP as well Jim. I play guitar, and back in college this song compelled me to buy a cheap bass and start learning some of Geddy’s parts. I started with this one. I love the way they drop a beat every other measure in the pre-chorus after the solo. They continue that feeling of 7 from the solo by changing the earlier motif slightly. Just brilliant. As you know, you can’t just learn the verse, chorus, bridge, rinse & repeat with these guys - variations each time through. This song has it all: the melodic into/outro from Geddy, Alex’s harmonics, and Neil’s tasty ride pattern. Cheers!

It's cool how you emphasize Geddy's voice. The vast majority of folks pick out the drums, the guitar, the bass or how they all work together. Most folks seem to have to get used to the vocals. You relish them. That's Rush. It's everything together...nothing more, nothing less.

@@SalvoG That's awesome because Rolling Stone was highly critical of Geddy's voice. Descriptions of Geddy Lee's singing in Rolling Stone have ranged from negative to borderline mean: • "shrill" (Presto, by Bob Mack) • "squeals" (A Show of Hands, by Michael Azerrad) • "screech" (A Show of Hands, by Michael Azerrad) • "keening shriek" (Power Windows, by David Fricke) • "stratospheric wails" (Permanent Waves, by David Fricke) • "unnecessarily strident" (Hemispheres, by Michael Bloom) • "Robert Plant-like shriek" (Permanent Waves, by David Fricke) • "dog-calling falsetto shriek" (Grace Under Pressure, by Kurt Loder) • "triumphant cry or a grating yowl" (Hemispheres, by Michael Bloom) • "sends his voice to the rafters through his nose" (Vapor Trails, by Richard Abowitz) • "congested vocals float through the songs like swamp gas" (Signals, by J.D. Considine)

Skirted away from the chasing 'Gleaming Alloy Air Cars' at 9:03 - "Laughing out loud with fear and hope, I got a desperate plan. At the one-lane bridge, I leave the Giants stranded at the Riverside. Race back to the farm, to dream with my Uncle, at the fire-side." are some of the best interpretive of a moment in time lyrics of any song that I have ever heard. Bravo, Geddy, Neil, and Alex on such brilliant lyrics.

The song was inspired by the futuristic short story "A Nice Morning Drive", written by Richard Foster and published in the November 1973 issue of Road & Track magazine. The story describes a similar future in which increasingly stringent safety regulations have forced cars to evolve into massive Modern Safety Vehicles (MSVs), capable of withstanding a 50-mile-per-hour (80 km/h) impact without injury to the driver. Consequently, drivers of MSVs have become less safety-conscious and more aggressive, and "bouncing" (intentionally ramming) the older, smaller cars is a common sport among some. Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart made several attempts to contact Foster during the recording of but did not have an up-to-date address and Rush were forced to settle for a brief "inspired by" note in the lyric sheet mentioning the story. In July 2007, Foster and Peart finally made contact with each other. Foster later posted on his website an account of their journey by motorcycle through the backwoods of West Virginia between stops on Rush's 2007 Snakes and Arrows tour. Barchetta literally means "small boat" in Itallian, is the diminutive form of ("boat" or "craft"). In the automotive industry, the term is used for a two-seat car without any kind of roof. The proper Italian pronunciation is (bar ketta), although it is sung with /t/ in place of /k/ by Geddy Lee Neil Peart's favorite car was the 1948 Ferrari 166MM. Lyrics explained: The song's lyrics tell a story set in a future in which many classes of vehicles have been banned by a "Motor Law." The narrator's uncle has kept one of these now-illegal vehicles (the titular red Barchetta sports car) in pristine condition for roughly 50 years and is hiding it at his secret country home, which had been a farm before the Motor Law was enacted. Every Sunday, the narrator commits a "weekly crime" of sneaking out to this location and going for a drive in the countryside. During one such drive, he encounters a "gleaming alloy air car" that begins to chase him along the roads. A second such vehicle soon joins the pursuit, which continues until the narrator drives across a one-lane bridge that is too narrow for the air cars. The song ends with the narrator returning safely to his uncle's farm.

Most of us are "Geddy fans". It isn't just the solid pitch, it's the extension of vowels, the emphasis on key words, the emotional investment in the story the song is telling. It's a common theme whenever they were interviewed, that while Neil is the primary lyricist, Geddy wouldn't let a song go to publication unless he could completely feel the intent of the lyrics. It's pure craftsmanship, and it is worthy of how you feel about it.

I love how the bass comes in , then it just calms and the story starts. Rush is different

Reading comments I'm in agreement. Welcome aboard what"Pratt,Lerxt, and Ged" have given to us. No others respect their listeners when working on new music. U should check out Foo Fighters indicating Rush to the Hall of Fame!!🎵🎵 Rock on!! Great reactions. ...Hemispheres is amazing full album side greatness. Neil Peart the drummer wrote all lyrics. The 1st album with Working Man self produced in Toronto...original drummer and back up vocals was John Rutsey. Neil was chosen to replace John due to diabetes and alcohol, which saved his life because they knew he wouldn't survive the 1st tour in U.S.
