When The Bangles came on the scene, it was very unique to have an all female group hit it big at that time. I remember wondering how long they would last. The ability to survive such a cut throat business like the recording industry was difficult for any band, let alone groups trying to pave the way for others who were different from the norm.

Sadly, the record label themselves was largely responsible for the band's collapse, by pushing Susanna Hoffs at the expense of the others and creating a great deal of tension and enmity between them since they were supposed to be an ensemble. To her credit, Hoffs didn't like the attention, but the damage was done (to be fair, I can understand WHY Hoffs got the attention; she had the best voice of the group and the most marketable look).

The weekly charts represent how the song performed in sales/airplay relative to all the songs in a given week. The year-end charts evaluate the performance of a song in sales/airplay relative to all songs' performance during the given year. Songs may peak at #1 for a given week, but then not persist on the charts as long as those that peak lower in a given week and result in a song with a very high weekly chart position having a relatively low year-end chart performance.

The Bangles were great with many top ten hits and were big on MTV in the 80’s. Prince was instrumental in their early years in helping them with songwriting. I believe Manic Monday may have been written by him, but I may be off a tad. Susanna Hoffs is the whole package. Every girl wanted to be her, and every guy wanted to be with her. I feel that both The Bangles & The Go-Gos were the pinnacle of awesome female rock/pop bands during that era.

Total ABBA vibes, a Disney Princess anthem before there were those. Very showtunes, but that strange reedy vocal is not something you hear anymore in pop. At the time it sounded raw and emotional and vulnerable and honest, because women did not let their voices break like that unless they were singing hard blues or rock. Singers were like out to prove their voice wouldn't break, so this was cool to hear it done intentionally. I can't help but hear "The Morning After (1972)" in the melody like they modeled the song after that mega hit.

Nice job SalvoG, and I agree. The Bangles were interesting. This is so far away from what they started out as that it's no shock they broke up almost immediately after it was a hit. They were actually a nice little indie garage rock band when they started, but the record company totally changed them on their second record. The only hit they ever had that was truly done in their own style was the Simon and Garfunkel cover Hazy Shade of Winter. This song Eternal Flame is such contrived pop material, like cotton candy that is totally sweet and is great the first time but gets old quickly. The Bangles members apparently thought so too. And it's not even a 'power ballad' -- there's no power to it. A power ballad would be like Motley Crue "Home Sweet Home", or Metallica "Fade to Black", or Heart "Alone". This is just a ballad ballad with some sweet harmonies. It's not horrible, it's just kinda blah. It's a shame they were never able to be themselves once the record company got hold of them. Their early video with Leonard Nimoy called "Going Down to Liverpool" as well as "Hero Takes a Fall" were money, and that's the type of music they were really good at and wanted to play. This professional manufactured stuff wastes their creative talents.

I'll add the one thing I think is cool about the video is when their faces are all flickering over each other as they're all singing at the end. That was pretty cool.

@@Ambaryerno Do you even understand what a power ballad is? Power ballads are ballads with power chords that are generally performed by hard rock bands: "Home Sweet Home" by Motley Crue, "Fade to Black" by Metallica, "Alone" by Heart, "Dream On" by Aerosmith. This Bangles song has no power chords -- it's a straight up ballad.

Your diplomacy is noted and appreciated, it’s ok to admit song doesn’t hit for you. Tastes vary. I remember listening to this on the radio as a kid. @Ambaryerno
@Ambaryerno Жыл бұрын
If you haven't already, you should absolutely check out their cover of Simon and Garfunkel's Hazy Shade Of Winter. It's even BETTER than the original. I'll just say it surprises a LOT of people who only know them for their more iconic pop-oriented hits like this, Walk Like An Egyptian, and Manic Monday. Most of their music is harder, with a post-punk edge and a strong influence from the harmonic rock groups of the mid and late 60s.

Sadly, Local radio stations in the UK over rotated this one down the years and somehow managed to make it become relatively underappreciated by the masses. This did the band(s) and song no favours. For the record it IS a truly great song, from great musicians. Can't think of many which could match it. The world was a somewhat more feeling place back then, and today it's not really appreciated because either it can not reach people, or it really can and that is what scares them. I'm sure you'll all have a view on which of those is more likely. It has touched me in good times and bad, I still revisit it regularly. Glad you got to listen to it, Try "Manic Monday", totally different feel on that one, I suspect you will like it. Be well.😉

I know just what you mean about this song hitting differently depending on where you are at. I honestly don't know how I feel about this song! At times it comes across extremely corny--a truly sappy, basic love song. Other times it brings tears to my eyes--perhaps due to the emotion of the words sung in her soulful voice and the way she hits those notes, along with the harmonies at the end...or maybe because I am truly sad that I can't relate. But if I had ever had an "eternal flame" kind of love, I would probably feel the same way about it each time. I got the feeling from your reaction that you were caught off guard emotionally & reacting out of personal experience as well.

I can tell you didn't like it but it really is a beautiful, romantic and intimate power ballad by an all-female band (one of two really successful ones, the other being the Go-Go's, also in the 1980s). I was working in music and I heard this track a lot on a promo even before the album was released and it wasn't a single yet (the first single off it was "In Your Room") but I called it and said "This will be their next single and it will hit #1". It has pop hit and radio airplay written all over it. To be fair I like a lot of their singles where one of the other ladies takes lead or when they share lead, but they marketed Susanna and her lead vocal singles the most. Jealousy, in-fighting and resentment of the lead singer broke up both the Go-Go's (in 1985) and the Bangles (in 1989), although Belinda Carlisle's solo career skyrocketed throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, whereas Susanna had only one real solo hit after the group.
