The original version, by Simon & Garfunkel (1966 - I had to look up the date), was also very good. The Bangles did a good job bringing it into the 80's. Also, it's nice to hear the extra vocal - two was nice, but I think that the three vocals from the Bangles brings more depth to the song.

'Pop rock' began in the 50s, actually. But it is a long and mostly honored (some really hate pop) tradition and this song only made it better. They have some beautiful harmonies and this song seems to be made for them. Enjoyed your reaction!

The Bangles are a great band, I love them! All four members do sing, some songs all four sing lead together like here, some songs they take turns, sometimes one sings lead and the others do background vocals - just depends. All members do sing and play instruments on their songs though. They all have amazing voices and when they sing together their harmonies are incredible!!

One of the big things about The Bangles is they all harmonized with each other and took turns singing lead. And, of course, they jammed (especially live). Susanna Hoffs has a particularly stand out voice that lead to some strife in the band. She's the one who knows where the camera is and will side glance it like a pro.

I love The Bangles. I really like their early pre-Manic Monday tunes the best. All four members are singing on this song. On the albums, each member had at least two songs where they got to sing lead vocals and the other tunes were all of them singing. Great harmonies. Glad I got to see them many times back in the early 1980s when I lived in Los Angeles. They really rock out during their live performances. One of the best shows I saw was when they played at The Whiskey A Go Go.

This is one of their good ones! Manic Monday is a good one! Walk Like an Egyptian is another catchy song! Thank you for this reaction! Oh, this song was in the movie Less Than Zero with Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) and Andrew McCarthy. If you see them floating around in the video. That's a cowbell! They all usually harmonize. Usually the brunette, Susanna Hoff, sings the lead, in my experience anyway.

They split lead vocals up. On their two biggest selling albums, Susanna ended up singing lead on 4 songs though.

The lead voice tended to be traded around through all four of the girls. However the record label tried to push Hoffs as the lead singer. I can't ENTIRELY fault them for that decision; While they could all sing, Hoffs' had the best voice (see Eternal Flame especially) and had "the look," so I think she would be the natural one to focus the marketing on. Hoffs herself was less than thrilled by that attention, however, and it ultimately led to the band's breakup.

All 4 are definitely singing. Debbie Peterson (drummer) is probably the 2nd best vocalist in the band, and sang solo lead on their singles "Going Down To Liverpool" and "Be With You." I think they just didn't want to obscure her with a boom mic while filming the video. But all 4 Bangles are great lead singers. It annoyed them that the record company and the press tried to push Susanna Hoffs to the front.
@Ambaryerno
@Ambaryerno Жыл бұрын
I can't ENTIRELY blame them. If Debbie was the second best vocalist, Susanna was the best by a not-inconsiderable margin (her vocals on Eternal Flame give me chills. I don't know WHERE they fit a voice so powerful into such a tiny frame). However, to her credit Hoffs herself was no less bothered by the push than the rest of the band.

They do a lot of four part harmonies on their songs but each of them also swap lead vocals, even the drummer. I recommend Eternal Flame and In Your Room next if you want more hits. For deeper cuts, Watching the Sky and Something to Believe in. There's a lot more to check out with them. They have a lot of great music. I think pop/rock is a good description of what they do, but there are always beautiful and complex harmonies.

The movie montage during this video is Less Than Zero. Its about 3 fiends who graduate from high school. And dont really keep in touch for awhile. Then one of them come home from college for Christmas to learn his other 2 friends have become cocaine addicts. Its a good movie and somewhat disturbing in its realistic portrayal of addiction. BTW... September Girls is my favorite one by them. Bass player Mickey Steele sings lead on it and she has an amazing soothing sound. I love it.

Paul Simon is one of the best songwriters ever. I just love that phrase "a hazy shade of winter". The Bangles were great and I love this cover version. They left out one of the verses from the original. I don't know why they made it shorter, except it was recorded for the film Less Than Zero. When recording for films, artists are often given criteria for their songs. It's possible the producers of Less Than Zero need a song of a certain length. For another great Bangles hit, check out Walk Like an Egyptian: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/edxmp9irrbvZpZ8.html

I’m pretty sure you’ll recognize Walk Like An Egyptian when you hear it! Every rock band in the 70’s had cowbells attached to their drum sets! It lingered in to the 80’s but not so much anymore. I believe all 4 members harmonized but Susanna & Jane (I think that was her name) usually took the lead. Great reaction & great trip down memory lane. Oh, it was the music press & management teams who decided they had to pigeon hole bands into genre. Most bands covered more than one, or 2 or 3, genres. Pop/glam/prog/hard/heavy metal rock....they were all labels for the powers that be to try to control artists.

This is a rare song where the cover is widely considered superior to the original. The Bangles were a vocal ensemble, with the lead passing around between the girls. However the record labels for various reasons tried to push Susanna Hoffs (who sang lead on songs like Manic Monday and Eternal Flame) as the "lead singer," which unfortunately contributed to the friction that led to the band's breakup (though they would eventually reunited in the early Aughts). I can't entirely fault the label; while all of the girls could sing, it's pretty clear that Hoffs has the best voice and range, and the most marketable "look." For her part, Hoffs herself didn't like the focus and attention any more than the rest of the band did.

If you have some time, this annotated video of their live performance at a college in 1986 is well worth the time. They sing together, there are solo performances and it shows that they were also pretty darn good musicians. I forget his name, but they has the same keyboardist for years. You don’t often see much of him though. Don’t be thrown by there bass player’s first name, Michael, that was a girls name around that time period. Her middle name was Susan, so in order to not make it confusing because Susanna Hoffs was also in the band, she went by Michael or Micki. m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qLBdnJWDt62tc4E.html.

Dude, it’s a video. They shoot it with artistic leeway, it doesn’t reflect them truly performing it live. You can tell by the lip-synching with no microphones. That doesn’t mean they don’t all sing during a live performance - they all do sing in this band. But for the “artistic” sake of the video, it’s not as important to put a microphone in front of them. Lots of bands did this back in the day.

At just about the same time, a band named The Church released "Under the Milky Way". Very much worth a listen, has the same kind of vibe to me. If you like the all-girl format, find a song by the Savages, "Shut Up". Watch the KEXP live version and buckle your seatbelt. The bridge is outstanding. Cool if you react to them, but at least listen for your own pleasure.

As a general rule, for any song whose video was a movie tie-in your best bet is to close your eyes, or blank the video, and just listen. Nothing ruins a song like having some marketers use it to sell some third-rate movie.
