This is exactly what I said to this video on another channel, and the response I got was "oh well I guess in your world the Nazi's won the war since your rooting for them, how do you know they are vets?? Huh? You don't. These could be unlisted young cadets that were just told to kill the enemy, you don't know the kinda crew this tank has"

The Tiger in this movie isn't the only Tiger left. There is a Tiger 1 and even a Tiger 2 in the "Panzermuseum" (Tank museum) in Münster, Germany. I didn't know if they are actually fully functional (besides the Canon) but as far as I know the Germans, they are in good condition.

The German subtitles actually get mistranslated, which kind of relates to your question "Did the German tank gunner have a stroke or something?". Well, apparently he gets seized by panic for a brief second, because what the tank commander actually says when the subtitles read "Don't let them get behind us!" ACTUALLY translates to "Load the goddamned shell!".

Yeah, bud I don't know what you were expecting. You're either very naive or a child. It's a movie, not a documentary. You can't have it all, and the directors, writers and producers certainly didn't have all the time or money in the world that you might think they have, let alone the actors. So, stop being so negative. A productive member of society doesn't list everything a movie did right just to bash it for the one thing it did wrong. The fact that you said it pisses you off is confusing too. Angry people have angry reactions I suppose.

The "Easy 8" nickname had nothing to do with the 76mm gun. The E8 designation meant the tank had the newer HVSS (Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension) suspension rather than the original VVSS (Vertical Volute Spring Suspension). Like you said the 76mm could punch right through the hull of a Tiger I at 1000m or the turret at 250m. I love that you mention N. Africa as the introduction of the Tiger. The particular Tiger used in the movie was actually captured in N. Africa.
@lyndoncmp5751
@lyndoncmp5751 2 жыл бұрын
Without HVAP the 76mm won't get through the front of a Tiger I beyond 500 yards and there is no verified documented case of any Sherman variant penetrating a Tiger frontally over around 300 yards. The Tiger Is nickel steel of 265 Brinell Hardness and slight angles (24 degrees on the lower front plate) actually gave it an effective thickness of up to 130mm. And then if the Tiger was standing oblique at, say 2 o' clock then that 130mm becomes 160mm.

@egonieser
@egonieser 2 жыл бұрын
Could, but rarely did. There are only several spots where it can successfully penetrate at 1km. It certainly cannot and did not penetrate the turret, mantle or lower glacis. The flat "step" at the upper glacis, as I like to call it, is the only place you can reliably pen and that can be done with any shell that exceded 100mm penetration as it's nothing but 90 degree flat plate with ammo stored behind and had some effective thickness of 80-100 (Depending if it's Tiger H or the later E variant). The 76mm didn't make it more "effective" frontally from short distance, it just gave it a bit more range. Even the 75mm could pen it, just not from as far. But 1km is a bit far fetched, not to mention you don't really aim at that distance anymore, optics weren't advanced enough, you just aimed for center mass and hoped for the best. And it didn't really work that well against Tigers as hitting a relatively small weakspot from such a distance is like hitting a fly on a dartboard. Most Tigers were taken out of service because of Technical malfunctions and the rest against Soviet troops where 90% of the Tigers and Panthers were sent. Allies really don't have a extended battle history against them. Soviets however did, and they made excellent guns later on that could easy shred them. T-34-85, KV-85, later IS-2 which had a monstrous 122mm gun that could pen a Tiger ANYWHERE frontally or otherwise. The 76mm american gun is a pea shooter in comparison. It's the Brits that made it good by mounting their own gun on the Firefly version. Now they had good guns, just like the soviets did.

Furys (M4a3e8) side armor is 1.5" (38mm) and a log. Below 50m the KwK36 firing the Pz.Gr.39 APCBC-HE-IT (standart AP round) penetrated 4 times the RHAe of that with a 100% chance in 60° . The Round hitting that spot would have penetrated the side armor, penetrated the wet stowage magazine and hit ammunition, prior to punching through into the turret basket, ripping Wardaddys´legs of, hitting more ammunition and leaving Fury on the opposit side of the Tank.

Thee 3in and 76mm AP ammunition are, besides a little bit of different shape around the neck, almost identical in volume and external shape (its the inside that counts), so the same ammo rack and storage configuration was chosen. So no, Fury was hit directly into one of its Ammo Racks, the Penetration of the Projectile and delayed impact fuse of the Projectile are designed to penetrate 4 times the amount of hardened steel armorplate that Fury had + Log on the point of impact. It was at an 50°-60° angle. Here the Pz.Gr.39 had the capability to penetrate 120mm hardened armorsteel plate with a 100% chance. The Log would have had no furtther impact on the projectile or fuse, the shot would have hat pentrated and exited on the other side of the vehicle or the delayed fuse would have detonated inside the fighting compartment. This shot was not survivable for Fury in any way. Unless the Tiger´s Ladeschütze (loader) had a stroke and loaded HE. Wich is unlikely, as these crews were only transfered into Tiger´s when they had a certain amount of experience and training. *Btw if you look at the footage of the Film in 0.25 speed, you see a really weird and impossible ricochet of the round. "I love how, in American movies, the bad tank has to ALWAYS be a Tiger." I have to agree with you that this trope is really old and obsolete. From tank documentaries I've watched, if you were an American tank crew in World War II, you were much more likely to encounter Panzer Mark IVs or Panzer Mark Vs (Panthers). Panzer Mark VIs (Tigers) WERE absolute monsters (and I think that's the main thing this scene was meant to convey), but they were among the RAREST of German tanks (rivaled only by the Tiger 2/Tiger Royal/King Tiger). So I really wish this film had a lot more engagements with Mark IVs and Vs, and have the Tiger be the "final boss" of the film, to show they were nowhere near as common as people believe them to have been.

Actually, it's not that uncalled for. By April 1945, most of the heavy tank battalions were dissolved and training _Tigers_ were being pulled from tank schools into combat. There was at least two of these schools near Schonebeck, which is roughly the region this movie is set in. And 2nd Armored reported at least one lone _Tiger_ from one of these school units being encountered by their own armor. Albeit it's unlikely- it's not unreasonable.

I would also mention that the "effect", so called "jack-in-the-box" when the turret of the tank would just fly away from the rest of the body after direct hit is realistic, especially in case of Sherman tanks, however in order to achieve that effect all hatches would have to be closed on the tank. this effect was caused by the huge amount of energy cumulated inside of the tank after the hit and it would literally pop the turret of of the tank. But in this movie the hatches are clearly open thus the it provides openings from which the energy of the blast can escape thus there is no way the turret would jump of like that.
@filmandfirearms
@filmandfirearms 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, Shermans were particularly unlikely to throw their turret. It also was not caused by built up pressure, but by ammo detonation. Most WW2 tanks stored the majority of their ammo in and around the turret basket or in the sponsons. It was just the best way they could do it. This meant that a side hit under the turret was actually very likely to detonate the ammo. As you might imagine, a few dozen high caliber shells, a significant portion of which would've been high explosive, is going to make quite a bang when it goes off all at once. Sometimes, that would be enough to shear through the turret ring bolts and lift the entire thing off of the chassis

@@filmandfirearms "It also was not caused by built up pressure, but by ammo detonation" High air pressure inside the tank is almost synonymous with ammo detonation inside the tank. You and OP might effectively be saying the same thing. When ammo explodes, that's because the propellant ignites and when it does the it creates a sudden intense pressure wave / increase in air pressure like any explosives. (Actually so much so that i'd be surprised if simply having the hatch(es) open would be sufficient to dissipate it fast enough.)

You're right, the battle scene is pure Hollywood. Yes, a decent Tiger tank crew would have destroyed the Sherman column. I do believe you need to be around or less than 1000 meters for the 76mm to be effective against the later model Panzer IV & the Panther. That means you would need to be closer to defeat the Tiger's frontal armor. By April of 1945, it is not unrealistic to think a single Tiger would be sent out to ambush allied armor. But I would think several 14-year-old boys &/or 60-year-old men armed with faustpatrone 30 would be supporting a single Tiger tank.

There was very little tank formations due to attrition early on, and destruction of facilities to produce them. Worth noting that regardless, doctrines were different during very late war periods due to lack of man power, and tactical elements.

One thing, realistically they would have destroyed fury first not only because it was first in the column but also because it has a 76mm gun. They would target 76mm Shermans A LOT in WW2. This became such a problem that it caused some easy eight and firefly Sherman crews to try to conceal their long barrel by putting fake muzzle breaks on it or painting the barrel to make it look shorter (with mixed results).

The same rounds used in the 76mm guns could penetrate 6 to 7 inches of armor. The tiger on the other hand was literally a heavily armoured sniper (as tanks comes). Tigers could penetrate shermans and t34s up to 2km. Also like he said, the tiger would never had revealed itself in real life. It would sit cozy and nice in its position and pick of the shermans. It is usually the one that fires first that wins a tank battle in real life. The panzer ave michael wittman who destroyed that british convoy did it from an ambush position. Just to nitpick: good points but the part where the Tiger missed its shot on the move is due to the German tanks lacking a stabilized gun which meant shooting on the move accurately was next to impossible. Immediately following, Fury’s shot missed because it’s driving to fast for its stabilizer to compensate and the two Sherman’s(ones also a 76mm) bounced because the short 75mm can’t pen the tigers front armor. In short, the tanks missing is due to them driving too fast for their stabilizers to work(Sherman’s) or lack thereof(German).

10:00 I was watching a video of Mark Felton’s, Mark said that none of the American tanks commandeered by the Americans engaged against Tiger tanks. They mistaken the Panthers and Panzer IVs for Tigers. The only American tanks that did engage with the Tigers were American tanks commandeered by British and Canadian forces during the breakout in Normandy. However the Americans did battle the Tiger three times; first round, Sherman vs Tiger, the Sherman won; second round, Pershing vs Tiger, Tiger won, but the Tiger’s victory was short lived when it got stuck on a nearby building and had to be abandoned; third round, Tigers were being loaded onto train cars. So to say "a few Tigers vs a large number of Shermans" is historical isn't really true.

It really depends which model sherman you're talking about as "being safe so a crew can get out after being hit by a german shell". Almost every sherman ran on gasonline, which we all know is highly flammable and explosive. Shermans were often nicknamed "matchbox" because once they were hit, they would burn a tall flame out of open hatches looking similar to a burning match.

Not necessarily. The Germans would target both the FIRST AND LAST tanks in a column. The purpose would be to block off a retreat using a destroyed Sherman as a Barrier. So it is possible the Tiger would shoot the LAST tank in the column first. Secondly that last tank is also a Easy-8 (you can see the long "76) when the turret blows off. BTW the 76 only made a difference at Medium-Long range, at very close range those M4A3 would have a good change to pen the tiger.

The Tiger wouldn't have left cover it would have taken out the Easy8 first not only because it was the most dangerous but also because it was the lead. Good point about how slow the Tiger is firing, German guns used the recoil to automatically eject the spent shell all that was needed is to push another round into the breach. Always 88s. Always. A PAK 40 was a formidable anti-tank weapon. Far more numerous than 88mm, and as deadly to anything it would be likely to be confronted with. It would certainly make any allied tank brew-up. 4th County of London Yeomanry lost 14 tanks and 13 others, Bren Carriers etc, in Villiers-Bocage, just to Wittman and his single Tiger, after taking out the first and last vehicle in the column. The rest were fish in a barrel. This late in the war, fighter bombers were far more likely to come across any remaining German tanks than other tank crews. As history legends himself says, they are more often than not to be faced with anti-tank weapons such as the one named above. While all the props used were genuine and extremely realistic, the same can't be said for the action scenes. A great review. I have only seen one previous on this film, I have a little catching up to do.
