I provide a running commentary of the 9/4/72 episode of The New Price is Right. All commentary is unrehearsed and unscripted, but clever edits were made here and there for pacing.

I wasn’t even born when this show hit the airwaves back in 1972. It has “Any Number”, “Bonus Game” and “One Right Price”. The following year, 1973 came the home version of “The New Price Is Right” made by Milton Bradley/Hasbro, it has a few pricing games featured on the show with different titles for each pricing game. For example, “The Numbers Game” was “Any Number”, “True Or False Game” was “Five Price Tags”, and “Higher Or Lower Game” was “Bonus Game”, and of course, “Race the Clock Game” was “Clock Game”. The home version of “The New Price Is Right” was offered on the syndicated nighttime version with Dennis James in 1973, but this first episode with Bob Barker was right before the nighttime version with Dennis James as the host. And the artwork on the “New Price Is Right” was no Bob Barker, it was Bill Cullen, the host of the original “Price Is Right” from the 1950’s.

Fun fact about Paul. During Price's 40th season, they had many former contestants appear and Paul not only appeared on an episode, not only did he win his way up on stage again, but believe it or not, he played Bonus Game again, got all 4 prizes right again, and the Bonus was in the same exact window as it was on 9/4/72, again!

The prize he won on that special anniversary show was a fully restored 1972 Chevy Monte Carlo.

Love how you broke down the elements of the first broadcast from 1972; this is not the only version that was like this (Dennis James and Bob Barker had a syndie nighttime show that was like this from 1972-80, and Tom Kennedy had a syndie nighttime one in 1985-86 [both were the same as this, with just three games and a Showcase]).

There was also a short-lived syndicated version in 1994 which they called "The New Price is Right", and it was hosted by soap star Doug Davidson. It had a lot of familiar games, but the contestants were called directly out of the audience to play a pricing game without having to bid on anything. There were a few other weird differences compared to the daytime show as well.

One other thing to mention that with Paul's Showcase bid, that would have been our first ever Double Showcase Winner if that rule was implemented at the start. Of course that wouldn't be until later when they started doing that in 1974, but imagine the added history if they had that right from the get go.

One of the potential reasons for the podium is so that there was a microphone to pick up the sound of the contestant (remember at one point where Bob told Connie she needed to speak into the microphone so she could be heard). This was before the "tie clip" microphones were common, and even today, Drew uses a wireless handheld microphone.

A few technical issues that I always noticed in this one, most notably with the music as soon as Bob walks through the doors and Bob's microphone swap at 9:27. A similar music issue would happen on the second aired episode during the opening "stand up" music, but more noticeable. It's great they played games in both locations on the first episode. Not having the lectern/podium/desk/thing at the giant price tag definitely helped the contestant/host interaction. I'm glad they got rid of it at home base, although Bob might have welcomed a barricade between him and some of the contestants. The showcase price reveal reminded me of how Art Flemming revealed the contestant wager during Final Jeopardy.

Hey, I enjoy your videos, and this one is no exception! This first episode of "The New Price Is Right" is a lot of fun. Interestingly, all three pricing games are still played today. I always have liked "Any Number". It's my favorite pricing game. Keep up the fine work!

Could be, or perhaps she was thinking of Let's Make A Deal with the Big Deal, and players having to give back what they had won previously.

I'm sure I watched the first ep. when it aired. One thing I never noticed is for the third round, Evelyn moved from position 1 to position 3 in Contestants' Row and Sandy from 3 to 4 (Myra remained at 2 throughout). Also, not sure why the turntable whirled around as Bob went to the final commercial. They did that for awhile at the closing credits for the first couple years but I'm guessing they stopped it when a contestant got caught on the turntable as they were trying to go see their showcase, I like this idea very much but I'd suggest having the TPIR audio slightly louder if you do it again.

7:45 There are two possible reasons to be doing that: One would be showing it's an honest game, and two would be for the enjoyment of the viewers playing at home. 14:45 What's funny is that, a few years later on Bob's appearances on Match Game, he would lampshade it and talk about giving away appliances to the Match Game audience. It certainly seems deliberate! 17:05 I still have a Kimball piano stored about somewhere. 17:20 Two is actually right. I can't remember anytime in the past several years that two ranges/overs were on one episode (like here)! 18:40 That's an interesting wrinkle--lighting each digit up while she's finishing saying the price. They sure don't do that anymore!

Bob wasn’t as popular when this first came out. Nobody is clapping or cheering and nobody was directed to. Slowly as you tune in, there is clapping and then more and more during the opening as the episodes continue.
