School really just destroys learning in general. Putting the emphasis on memorizing things instead of understanding them, and giving no incentive to do more than the minimum required for the minimum grade to satisfy you, schools are effective in pushing away any desire for learning. Reading and thinking become chores, and students leave with the desire to never again pick up a book. Thanks high school

to me the best time of day to read is AT NIGHT, right before you go to sleep, in bed. 1. you spend half an hour to an hour without your phone which is better for sleep 2. it relaxes you and sets you in a sleeping mode 3. it is so calming and enjoyable as you're in your bed 4. it's gonna be every single day

It's so annoying having reading OCD. I have to keep rereading certain sentences to make sure I read them "correctly" and it's hard for me to turn the page and I have to keep checking I'm on the right page, even though I am.

To be honest. Just finding something you are deeply interested in trying to understand. With practice you'll slowly grasp how to effectively retain the information rather than re-reading the same paragraph over and over. Not to mention it will enhance your overall perspective of how literary structure should be presented. It all pieces together very nicely, in time. Keeping away from distractions like what he mentions is this video is a big must. Baby steps though. It takes time, but is doable.

I started doing the 25 pages a day challenge 2 weeks ago. I'm schedulling the reading time just when I get back from work because I still have that working mindset and I know that if I stop to rest, watch some youtube or something, I'm not going to do it. So, I get home, I make some tea, and start reading. 25 pages that's all it takes. I won't say it's easy but it gets easier with time. Thank you, Frank, for your book recomendations and for all the tips that have helped me improve my life!

I seem to do this: Investigate productivity, health and learning tips very seriously, apply them relentlessly and get great results. Then, after a couple months I get tired and stop applying 90% of what I learned until I regret it enough that I start the cycle again. It's so hard for me to be consistent.

+Enrique Z this is a common problem; it's so easy to take on a bunch of new challenges when we're motivated and excited - much harder to keep them all up as time goes on. I think the trick is to start with a small scope - one habit that starts out easy. Eventually, it'll become automatic AND give you an increased ability to take on new ones.

(What I'm about to type is what Salman Khan said on a TED speech in 2011) Imagine that a student got 95% out of 100% on a test. He failed on the 5% for some reason (some concept or exercise that he did not understand). Usually what a student will do is he won't invest more time into the concept he skiped neither the teacher will care about it and will follow onward to the next unit. What we'll notice is that that student is going to have minor problems that'll evolve into significant problems in the future. What this means is that if you really don't get a concept, just invest more time in the exercises about that concept, graphs show that students who do so manage to "evolve" way faster in the future. So a student that is thought to be slow can actually be "gifted". That's how Maths works. It's abstract which means it's further from reality the deeper you go. The deeper you go the more time you need to invest in all kinds of concepts. But in the end, you'll find yourself improving and the extra time you wasted on a concept will be compensated in the future. Hope this helps, and sorry for my grammar.

Instead of measuring how many books I've read, I will measure how long I spent reading this certain book, I will list the starting date until I finished it. That way, I will feel motivated to finish it and keep me on track how often I read based on how long I spent on it. After doing this, I realised that I have a book that I've been reading now for almost a year, and there's also a book I only read for five days. Reading books that also interest you helps, but not all books will interest us until we reached the middle. So keep reading and be consistent. Always be open for new learnings.

One thing that really helps me is having a designated spot to read. Mine is in my closet. I hung a flashlight from a shelf and I put a pillow and blanket there. When i sit there not only is it dark so I only can look at the light on my book and I’m not distracted, but when I go there my brain just knows it’s time to read and I find much easier to get into the book. That’s just one thing that helped me and I hope it helps you 📚📚📕📗📘📙

Circle the words. Generally, if the book is advanced compared to your level of compression, then you probably have to look up words to put it together. Otherwise, hard words tend to just add to the overall context and it's mostly redundant I've found. Other passages tend to provide the overall understanding.

Thanks for the tips! Do you have a video about how to retain more information from the book that you read? I'd also be interested in seeing how you go about vocabulary words as you read. It's a pet-peeve of mine to gloss over a particular word that I don't know. I simply can't do it. I absolutely have to stop, put down the book and look up the meaning of the word and write down the definition in my note book. That obviously takes up most of the time I could be spending on actually READING the book. Any tips? Make a video for both questions, please! :-)
@Thomasfrank
@Thomasfrank 8 жыл бұрын
+disobeytv oh yeah that's a HUGE problem for me as well. It's the reason I still haven't finished Cryptonomicon - I absolutely love Neal Stephenson, but that book has so much vocab that it'd take me a good 5 minutes to finish a page. I'd recommend keeping a piece of paper next to you when you read; when you come across a vocab term you don't know, write it down and try to move on. Hopefully the word's context can give you enough that you're not lost. Later, go through your list and look up all the new words at once. That works well enough for me - my brain knows the word is written down for later, so it can let it go. For retaining more information, check out the Active Reading video I linked to in the description. Additionally, exercising helps you retain information better as well (if you learn afterwards - not during). I'll get into all the biology behind it in a future video :)

@Thomasfrank
@Thomasfrank 8 жыл бұрын
+LiNingAir I've legitimately been playing with every piece of my setup this week to figure out why that's happening. It might be the specific mic I'm using combined with the distance from my mouth when I'm filming, because it doesn't seem to be a problem when I'm podcasting. I do think the audio turned out better on this one than on last week's video though, because I cut the audio a bit in the frequency range where sibilance happens. I'll keep working to improve it going forward too.

Also, you should do an updated 'whats in my bag video with the new peak design messenger bag)

+Tim Felbinger (Felbinger Films) thanks for the tip! That makes sense - I was wondering why the audio was a problem in only some videos, and now I can probably look back an identify those as ones where I was further from the camera and mic. The funny thing is that I accidentily stumbled into this habit. I work night shift so home>>read at least 10 to 30 pages & eat breakfast. The only problem was that I developed a pavlovian response wherein I felt as though I needed to read something anytime I ate breakfast.

All the video teaches you is how to trick yourself into more reading. Counting pages, making a spreadsheet, hiding from distractions. What? You got the idea of reading wrong. This is not a job. It has to be enjoyable. If you don't enjoy the book you're reading just leave it and start another. If you enjoy it, you'll forget about everything else, until you finish it.

When I'm reading fantasy books is easy to do this every day, with non-fiction it's a bit harder, even if I'm interested in a subject. I have little time when I'm working so I read 20 minutes before sleep and in more than a month of regular reading I've done almost 3 books. One of the best things I could do for myself.
@Thomasfrank

+Wysocky13 I agree - it's harder to remain engaged with non-fiction most of the time. I've noticed that having a quiet, non-distracting environment works WONDERS though. Yesterday I wasn't able to get to the coffee shop, but my house was filled with roommate noise. So I just sat out in my car with my headphones on and read there - after about 5 minutes, I'd slipped into a much more concentrated state and sailed through most of the chapter I was on.

The idea of doing a smaller quota each day vs a book per month is a philosophy I believe can be applied to so many things in life. Any kind of habit creation. Exercise, tidying your desk (something I'm working on), dream projects, keeping up with emails, anything!

Thanks for this video! My goals this year is to read anything that I wish to move on with my creative artist path and self educating person. I am a self taught artist and I got my first illustration job in the senior year of high school. But it took many years to practice but I was constantly practicing my art. I also found out that having a good english teacher really encourages me to write more! I got a regents score of 55 in english and I got 60 or higher score on algebra, social studies, and even biology as well! I was safe to go to community college! Again thank you Thomas Frank for really great tips and getting started on organized life! Your videos are really informative and I think you are the only male channel that does these organizing tips.... But I hope you'll keep producing these videos consistently. I really do enjoy them! As someone who reads A LOT and never had any problem with motivating myself to read. This video is very interesting for me. I love learning about problems other people have that I'll likely never have as it's something I'd never learn from my own experience. The interesting part is that I don't follow ANY of those tips. Reading for me is pretty much like Netflix. It's not something I proscratinate doing it is something I do to procrastinate. So I'll just read sporadically whenever I feel like it in very large chunks. Reading 25 pages sounds like torture to me. I'll just pick a weekend and read a book, front to back, no distractions. Just me, my favorite beverage (though I'm now switching to water T_T sugar withdrawl sucks) and a book. Stopping to read and doing other things is a way bigger problem. I might have read Words of Radiance in 2 days and I don't read that fast. (To be fair I slept like 2 hours to catch a bus and the bus was on break for carnival so I decided I was too awake to sleep again and just finished the damn book)

The time you read is also dependant on why you are learning. If you want to learn something, reading early is great. For novels, I personally like to combine it with a screen free hour (or minute) before going to bed.

May I add audiobooks , they are very helpful for people who are too busy to sit down and read . I listen to a book whenever I’m doing mindless tasks like dishes , laundry or commuting to work . Gets me at least an hour or two a day of reading and then I’ll read another 30 minutes in a different book before bed

What works best for me is "take the plane more often" because it's while waiting for boarding or when uncomfortably squeezed between my chair and that of the person napping in front of me, that I read most. This might sound like I'm making fun of the question but I'm not. An honest answer can get you a long way. Flying around the world is probably too expensive a hack, but there may be substitutes for it, like taking a bus around town, go to a public library or sit in your fav' pub. With a book. On a higher level note: WHY do you want to read more? In my case it's because stuff I read in a book tends to rush through my head for a longer period of time and have a bigger impact on my thoughts and actions, than stuff I watch or read online. So, in my case it seems to be a proper goal. If you want to read more books because some guru told you so but you don't really feel the benefit, then I would find another goal. If it is so beneficial, then why is reading not the most natural thing to do? In my case it's because of the ubiquity of brain candy like youtube and because reading often makes me sleepy, while youtube demands less mental energy and can get me halfway through the night (and I don't want to go to sleep just yet). There's usually a lot of psychology and work behind "how to read more books", which cannot be replaced by giving yourself a daily goal or telling others about it. At least that doesn't work for me. I'm in tune with 4, 5, 6. Cheers

Taking notes on every book you read into a software like Evernote is the best thing you can do. It's like creating your own library with every information you need. Then, you just have to go into the search bar and type any word ; "productivity" for instance, and every notes containing this word will magically appear. I have now over 100+ notes on various subjects and it became pure motivation : grow my personal Information library as much as I can. Ps: If you use Evernote Plug in, you can save every interesting article you read instantly.

Talking about goals is a nocebo. You tell me why its bad to talk about goals and after watching your video i will know why I SHOULD FEEL BAD. But than in reality it doesn't matter. Like telling someone about your goal should than counteract the accountability. It would counteract the accountability. But really, now you are telling me how telling people about my goals will help me. And because i believe it should help me it will. Makes perfect sense. The wonders of placebo.

Please, guys! Don't get caught in the hype of this 'reading more books in little time stuff'. If you are trying to read more books in little time, you will not get the main point and the most of the information that can be most helpful because you're so focused on reading more books. It's about quality, not quantity. this is a great idea. I like it. Now, you should do a video of how you go about reading, the process, showing how you remember the key points.

To comment on the relationship between accountability and goals; I think this is most effectively viewed through the lens of principles in Gretchen Rubin's book "The Four Tendencies" (also in her great book "Better than Before"). Understanding how you as an individual respond to expectations can be highly instrumental to effectively tailoring your incentives to your personality. If you know that you are an "Obliger" who responds best to outer expectations, then accountability will likely be your most effective incentive. I am very much a "Questioner" who cares most about inner expectations and intrinsic motivations, and I am finding some of my best results while keeping my goals to myself.
